It's time for our next round of suggestions!

Just a reminder that you can find a full list of prompts already on the 2023 list in the third post on this thread.

A little reminder of how things are done around here:

How it works:
- The topics for the 2023 reading challenge list will be determined by a series of mini-polls, the number of which depends on the number of prompts winning in each mini-polls
- Suggestions for each poll will be opened until 15 suggestions are received and “seconded.
- The voting thread will open the day after suggestions go live. You can find the schedule here.
- The poll will be posted after the voting thread is opened for 24 hours, and will remain open for three full days.
- Each user has 8 votes to spread between their favorite (top) and least favorite (bottom) prompts
- The prompts with the more favorable votes (comparing top votes to bottom votes, and looking at the overall number of votes it received) will be added to the final list (between 2 and 5 depending on how the votes are spread)

Rules:
- Each member can only suggest OR second one prompt
- Suggestions close after 15 total seconded prompts

When suggesting and seconding, feel free to provide examples and descriptions that may help other members understand the prompt better. These descriptions and examples will be copied over to the voting thread for further discussion.

As always, please express any and all feedback (respectfully, of course), either here or in The Wild Discussion.

message 2: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Ralph | 188 comments A book related to loneliness or isolation.

In the time of Covid and with so many people working from home now, I feel like loneliness is a pandemic all its own. My wife is a therapist and she has talked to so many people since Covid happened that are really just struggling with profound loneliness. I don’t know if this is a theme we have ever explored before, but thought it might be a good one that would lend itself to fiction or non-fiction equally since it is such a universally human condition.

Listopias:

/list/show/1...

This one may have books that work too:

In honor of the 60th anniversary of MLK's I Have Dream speech and his hope "little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers." read a book with an interracial relationship (love, friendship, family).

Alicia | 1490 comments A book with 4 or more colors on the cover.

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood The Sentence by Louise Erdrich Manslaughter Park (Jane Austen Murder Mystery, #3) by Tirzah Price I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Maya Angelou's Autobiography, #1) by Maya Angelou Publishable By Death (St. Marin's Cozy Mystery #1) by A.C.F. message 8: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2956 comments A book related to something lucky

Could be a lucky object is part of the story, on the cover or in the title. Cats are often considered lucky for example. Could be a story about a lucky character, eg they win the lottery, have a lot of lucky escapes or soul survivor.

And for Animal Crossing fans:

message 9: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1825 comments A book that has an object that is repeated on the cover.

Some examples:

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty
Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen
One Two Three by Laurie Frankel

message 10: by Mahi (last edited Aug 18, 2022 07:52AM) (new)

Mahi | 95 comments A book set in the Indian subcontinent.

The Indian subcontinent is a region in Southern Asia. It is situated on the Indian Plate, projecting southwards into the Indian Ocean from the Himalayas. It includes the countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

I second this one

message 14: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2832 comments (Using my suggestion turn to post for Ann).

A book that answers the question "What if".

Ann's ideas "I am reading one right now. "What if" Marie Curie had NOT invented radiation etc.. It could go many ways. I read one years ago about Jack in the Beanstock. Also in Seattle where I live there is a book club reading "what if" the big one hits...earthquake of 8.0 or more. Or "what if" a war came out with a different result."

The prompt is not limited to Alternate History but since that would be the route I'd go here is a list.

/list/show/3...

Fee | 233 comments I’ll second “a book related to something lucky

(I love a colorful, especially brightly colored, book cover)

message 17: by Tina (new)

Tina | 157 comments Family saga.

/shelf/show/...

message 18: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Ralph | 188 comments I should add that the prompt about loneliness does not have to be a downer of a book. It could be about someone who overcomes loneliness. Might work well for romance. Could be about someone on a quest like Lord of the Rings. Or the book that immediately came to mind for me was Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine.

I used my second already but like this suggestion more than I initially thought. There are a lot of main characters that would fit the bill, which is the direction I'd want to take it.

This list is by the person who did the third one in the original suggestion, but seems worthy of posting:
/list/show/1...
(a lot of beautiful/colorful titles on this list as well!)

LOL- I just looked at my Bookbub newsletter for today and there was a book with an interesting title so I read the description and it began "Family saga." I was like hmm, what would make me read a family saga? We have an answer!

I also love this prompt. Here are a few Listopias on solitude:
Best fiction about solitude
Best nonfiction about solitude
I Want to Be Alone (Going on the theory that learning to value certain things about solitude is one way to deal with isolation.)

message 30: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3221 comments A book set during the Roaring Twenties (1920's).

The 1920's was an exciting decade full of change. The Great war was over, the economy was booming. Music and culture: The jazz age, Harlem Renaissance in NY, Paris salons with artists and writers, The Lost Generation, a Moveable Feast.
Women more freedoms, the right to vote, flappers, pants! Prohibition and organized crime.
