bailey (bailsbookshelves) | 1185 comments READATHON INFORMATION

We’re so glad you’re interested in participating in our group’s readathon challenges! We plan to host at least one team readathon per year and have some guidelines below for future readathon-ers to know what to expect.

Team Readathon Timeline:
Announcement: The 1st of the month the readathon will take place in the monthly message and in the readathon informational thread (ex. January 1)

Sign-ups: Lasting 2 weeks, starting approximately 3 weeks before the start of the readathon (ex. January 3-17)

Team Announcement: 1 week before the start of the readathon (ex. January 20)

Start of the Readathon!: Whenever we have future readathons planned, they will be posted in the comment below this one. Every readathon will begin at midnight in your timezone. (ex. January 27)

End of the Readathon: Every readathon will also end at midnight in your timezone (ex. January 30)

Awards: Announced a few days after the end of the readathon (based on how quickly participants and team leaders update their team’s progress) (ex. February 1)

What happens during a readathon?:
Team Readathons: You will be evenly matched into a team of 5-8 based on your reading pace and past readathon experience. Once the teams have been announced, you will be given a link to a team spreadsheet where you can add your planned books for the challenge. You will also have access to your team’s discussion thread where you should introduce yourself to your teammates and get excited for the upcoming readathon! Once the clock hits midnight on the first day, you are free to start adding pages and audiobook hours to your team’s spreadsheet to start racking up points. Be sure to keep your pages and hours updated so that your team leader always has an idea of how the team is doing overall. When the readathon ends, expect to see awards posted in the next few days to see how everyone did!
These readathons will typically last for 10 days.

Individual Readathons: These will be more laid back than team readathons and the perfect experience for readers looking to boost their reading stats for the year! Individual readathons are typically shorter in length and have more open prompts so you have more control over your TBR for this style of readathon. Simply track your number of pages, hours, books, read, etc. in the thread designated and cheer on your fellow readers as the event progresses!
These readathons will typically last for a weekend (2-4 days).

Individual Readathon Timeline:
Announcement: Two months prior to the start of the readathon in the Monthly Message. (ex. January 1)

Sign-ups: No need to sign up for this style of readathon since you are only competing with yourself.

Readathon Central: One month prior to the start of the readathon with a link posted in the Monthly Message. (ex. February 1)

Start of the Readathon!: Whenever we have future readathons planned, they will be posted in the comment below this one. Every readathon will begin at midnight in your timezone. (ex. February 28)

End of the Readathon: Every readathon will also end at midnight in your timezone (ex. March 2)

Awards: There will not be awards announced for individual readathons due to the complicated nature of tracking everyone’s progress who participates. You should always feel proud about finishing a book and absolutely reward yourself for a boost in reading, whatever that looks like for you!

Have an idea for future readathons? Let us know!
If you have an idea or suggestion that you want to see us incorporate into future readathons, let us know in this thread or send me a message! We love using group members ideas for challenges and readathons are no exception. We look forward to hearing from you!

You MUST be able to receive messages in order to participate in a team readathon.
- - - ŷ has recently made some changes in everyone's privacy settings, so please check out this thread to make sure that one of the mods or your team leader can message you. It also helps (but is not required) for your profile to not be set to private.

Tentative Schedule for 2025 Readathons:
February Book Awards (Team)
May Continents/Heritage (Individual)
July Decades (Team)
September - Dark Academia/Spooky/Cozy (Individual)

Carol Palmer | 526 comments How do I track number of pages if I'm reading on a Kindle? I can track percentage read or location in the book, but that's not the same as pages. Some Kindle books show page numbers, but most do not.

Carol, maybe you could check the total number of pages of the hardcover edition and use the percentage on your Kindle to calculate on which page you are.

Yes, I guess that's the only way. I was hoping someone might have an easier way to do it. I didn't want to have to keep track of the info from the hard copy of the books. Lazy me!

Karin | 182 comments Usually the MPE has page numbers even for Kindle books, at least in my experience. I don't read much on my Kindle, although it came in handy during the Covid library shutdowns!

This is what I have done in earlier readathons I have participated in.

Tonia | 4 comments I haven't taken part in a readathon since I was in primary school (many decades ago!)

I'm keen to have a go at taking part.

And a tangential question - how do I link my challenges into my reading corner? I know I read instructions for this somewhere but for the life of me I can't find that post

Is this the post you're hunting, Tonia?
Yearly, Quarterly, Monthly Challenges - Start Here

We usually link to that post in each yearly challenge, in case you need to find it again.

Cindy Cheng | 19 comments I am looking forward to joining readathons as well. Both individual and team are exciting to be part of! I am not a native speaker of English but I have been building a habit of reading English books for 1 year and hopefully can be more engaged with some reading activities. I joined a few readathon on Bookly in 2022 and they were quite fun. : )

Megan, are you getting our monthly newsletters? Both of last year's readathons (one group, one individual) were announced in the newsletters. You can choose to get it via email, GR message, or just read it in the Announcements folder in our home page.

More information will be announced in the February monthly message on the 1st, yes! The readathon will begin on a different date than that, however.

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 2388 comments I was hoping to participate in this but I missed the deadline. Just in case I could be added to a team now, here are my answers:

1. How many books do you think you'll be able to read over the 10-day event?
Note: Please only include books that are at least 100 pages long, or you have 100 pages left in at the start of the Readathon.
At least 5-6

2. Can you commit to checking in with your team approximately every 2-3 days throughout the 10 days of the readathon?
Definitely

3. Are you willing to assume the role of leader or co-leader for your team? (See below for what these roles entail.)*
Not this time, since I obviously couldn't even manage to sign up on time! :(

4. Did you participate in either the World Mysteries readathon in 2022 or the 25k readathon in 2021?
I believe I did...

And if I cannot be added, that's okay. I'll survive the disappointment! ;)

Some of our past and current challenges, as well as member-suggested themes, could lend themselves well to shorter team-based readathons.
- Time: decade prompts like in Hindsight is 2022, time travel, multiple timeline book (i.e., past and current POV), a book that spans x years/generations, history, HF, future, ages (target audience, author, or character age)
- Feelings: the Wheel of Feels in Carmen's Q2 challenge could make great teams and prompts
- World: geographical settings, translations, authors' countries of origin or current nationality, migrants, refugees, travel
- I Spy: This fun individual challenge might be a blast done with a team. Read x books with [object] on the cover or in the title (fruit, fire, dress, tree, etc.)
- Awards: team prompts for certain book awards. Teammates could read award-winners based on their genres/interests, i.e. one chooses the mystery awards, another reads sci-fi, etc.

You may have enough ideas already for years of readathons, bailey, but the challenge archives likely hold scores of other options.

Thanks for running Readathons for us. They are so fun! 🥰

That's a very cool list.

I especially love this idea:

- World: geographical settings, translations, authors' countries of origin or current nationality, migrants, refugees, travel

I know I am always hoping to discover great authors and stories from around the world. My reading is probably too US-centric right now and this sort of theme would be great for broadening my reading list.

Caterina, you might enjoy the yearly challenge, To Boldly Go. I've "visited" 37 countries (setting or author) so far this year, some twice. 😊

Hi Bailey, thanks for putting the Readathon together!

A future suggestion may be - by people on the cover and/or word in title man, woman, boy, girl (as in children).

Hi, LYNN! Sign ups for the September readathon will begin on the 25th of August - 1 week from today!

Chalmation | 3589 comments It would be helpful if we knew what the prompts were before we sign up. I already have my books scheduled for September, and if they don't fulfill any of the prompts, I would know ahead of time not to sign up. And those books are for September challenges, so I don't want to change them.
