Libbie Hawker (L.M. Ironside) (lmironside) | 210 comments Hi, all! I'm looking for a good biography (or a master's thesis, or anything factual) about Sappho. I've been scouring all my usual resources but can't find much about her. There HAS to be a decent biography of the famous poetess somewhere!

Any other resources dealing with Lesbos and Greece of her era in more general terms would also be welcome.

Thanks!

You might try Peter Green's The Laughter of Aphrodite. It's Historical Fiction rather than strictly non-fiction and I haven't read it myself, but Green was an expert on the subject and he did write several fine books about ancient Greece.

I'm not aware of any "biography of Sappho;" as a biographer I'd guess there is far to little known fact to make such a work possible. I recommend looking at Sue Blundell's Women in Ancient Greece Women in Ancient Greece by Sue Blundell , which includes a chapter on Sappho, and also Sarah B. Pomeroy's Spartan Women Spartan Women by Sarah B. Pomeroy . Both have extensive bibliographies which may yield more precise tips.
