In this 14th book in the series, Maisie is investigating the disappearance of an apprentice painter, working on a government contract that no-one will talk about. It is also the time of the Dunkirk rescue, which is portrayed in the book from the point of view of the general British public, who only had access to heavily censored information. We also see more of Maisie’s personal life as she tries to adopt Anna. There was a lot going on in this book and there were more than a few loose ends left that will hopefully be tied up in the next book in the series. I liked how the different events were explored, and they mainly felt realistic to the times, and more information is provided about these in the author’s note at the end of the book.
