Valerie | 280 comments What would it be? I noticed no prompt for poetry, so I made a couple of mine poetry. But, I got to thinking that some other prompts might have been fun as well.

So, what would YOU have added had you made the challenge?

message 2: by Melissa (new)

Melissa There are lots of specific genres out there that were not on the list. Mythology, Western, Fable, Crime/Detective, Fairytale, Tall Tale, Science Fiction, Horror... Some of these definitely would have pushed me outside my comfort zone. Hmmm, maybe next year.

Amanda (amandabookworm) I would get rid of the category "Book by a female author." I think it's kind of outdated. I would add "Book with Multiple Points of View" or "Book with Multiple Narrators". There are lots of genres that would fit into that category.

Great question! I totally agree that the "woman author" category is silly. Why not have a book by a male author category then?

Poetry would be good, and maybe a book written in verse. Retold fairytales...

Kaye Wyly | 5 comments poetry...free verse fiction...historical fiction...Fairy tale...horror...

Tats I would love a 'poetry' category, Valerie, and certainly agree with Melissa that some of her mentioned categories would have pushed me to my limits as well. I am actually thinking about changing 'book written originally in a different language' to 'book written in my mother tongue'. I don't think I have read anything by a German author since I left high school....

However, what I do like about the challenge is that it makes you research books on other levels but content: when was it written, where is it set etc. And technically categories like 'nonhuman characters' or 'book with magic' still leaves quite some room to explore genres. I guess here it is up to you if you play it safe or go with something way out of your comfort zone.

Page (victriviaqueen) | 47 comments Well I used the "book by a woman author" to fit in a book I read for another reading group, but in general I agree it is an outdated category. In the spirit of most of the rest of the categories perhaps "book with a female protagonist" instead.

The difficult ones are "book that makes you cry" and "book that scares you" -- because you can't always tell what those are until you are done reading. I'd like to replace those with "a book about dying or death" because that makes most of us cry and scares the rest of us.

I agree we need poetry to complement the play category. One non-fiction book is not nearly enough for my usual reading patterns so I'd like to see more of those. I agree that historical fiction would be a good add, and I'd like to see alternate history, too.

I also agree with Tats that there is a lot of room to explore genres already!

Hahaha, agreed Cheryl.

The non-fiction category should be expended - definitely!!! You do have the memoir category but other than that I guess you would have to again fit it into categories like "authors under 30' etc.

I have problems with the 'bad reviews' - most books get good and bad reviews...

I am thinking about this too because 99% of the books i read are originally written in english so maybe i will change the subject to book that was not written in English.

It sounds like we could crowdsource our own challenge for 2016! Maybe I'll just start keeping a list of all the great suggestions everyone has.

±·²¹³Ùá±ô¾±²¹ Lopes (silkcaramel) Ohh,I would love to add more historical fiction and definitely more mythology!

Cheryl wrote: "I'd like to replace those with "a book about dying or death" because that makes most of us cry and scares the rest of us."

Totally agree! These two categories are among the hardest on the challenge.

I LOVE that idea Anne!!

Frogli | 118 comments I do like the idea of crowsourcing a challenge for next year :)

Having said that I do like that the categories are open to interpretation and would be a bit wary of making them too specific.

Tats Couldn't help myself and started a new discussion: "Reading Challenge 2016 - what categories do YOU want"
/topic/show/...

Add your categories as well as I haven't posted any of the once you mentioned.

Thanks for getting that other thread going! In the fall I think we should take a look at the suggestions and carry on in 2016.

Agreed Anne. I was thinking along a pole though it certainly would be VERY long... Let's see then.
