Elatsoe is an indigenous teen who is trying to solve the murder of her uncle with her best friend Jay. I didn't love it and mostly didn't find it very engaging, but let's start with what didn't work for me and end on a good note with I liked about the book.
First, the mystery is basically solved immediately up front, so it isn't necessarily exciting trying to get to the conclusion. I guess the mystery is really the how and why even though you know the who. I kept hoping the who was a red herring so it would be more interesting, but nope. Also, I think Elatsoe is a teen, but the book read a lot younger than teen. It was just a little too precious or cute for my taste. The audio is only like 9 hours long, but it felt too long.
I loved the folklore parts of the story. The history about Elatsoe's family and grandmother are engaging. There is a ghost dog (awesome!) and vampires and various other types of "monsters." Those parts are where the writer and the story really shine. The main characters are also all likeable.
Great on audio! Recommend for anyone looking for a light mystery with folklore elements.
