Shelly | 912 comments Thanks to Joy D for reviewing this one and reminding me that it has been on my TBR for too long!

This relatively short book (230 pages) accomplishes so much. It is the story of Arnold Spirit aka Junior, a 14 year-old Indian (Native American) boy who takes the enormous step of leaving the reservation to go to a high school in the nearby town, where all the students are white. Junior knows it is the only way he can escape the dead end of poverty and alcoholism on the reservation. But he must deal with the consequences of being an outsider at his new high school and a traitor on the reservation. Hence, the "part-time Indian" designation. I have to believe that the book draws heavily on the author's experiences growing up on a reservation. Even though it is balanced with humor and love for his tribe, the book has very sad moments. Armed with a great 3 point shot and a few good friends, Junior not only survives, but begins to thrive, but nothing comes easy. This is a YA book, so I will put Alexie's "grown-up" books on my TBR.

Happy to see it was tagged book club 746 times. There is much to discuss here.
