Hannah | 3099 comments This work of historical fiction is based loosely on an English village that was devastated by the plague in 1665. Told through Anna’s eyes, as the disease starts to kill her friends, family and neighbours in a random way, Anna starts to questions her faith. When the spread of the plague threatens to overwhelm the village, it is cut off from the surrounding towns, villages and countryside, and the villagers start to turn on each other. The book was a little slow at times, especially the beginning, but by the time the village was in the grip of the plague, it was hard to put the book down. One of the things that I enjoyed most about the book was how it showed how the villagers lives and behaviour towards each other changed when they faced problems. The ending seemed perhaps a little out of keeping with the rest of the book, but I actually think I like how it ends.

Booknblues | 11520 comments This was the first Geraldine Brooks and I loved it.

I didn't like the ending at the time, but I might feel differently now.

DianeMP | 534 comments Great review! This was my fourth Brooks novel: . People of the Book (my favorite), March ( she won the Pulitzer Prize for it), A Year of Wonders (which I immensely loved) and Horse (I haven't finished it yet being a little disappointed by it so far, but I want to finish it because I hear it ties together very well.) She's written more, I just haven't gotten to them yet: They include Caleb's Crossing; The Secret Cord; and her non-fiction Nine Parts Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women. Her background is in journalism, working as a reporter for the Wall Street Journal.
Sounds like I need to start a fan club for Brooks. She's fantastic!
