Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments Jackie, I see you marked Angel's Flight as a reverse that I've read. Are you a Harry Bosch fan? We've finally collected the whole series and I'm rereading them, in order this time. About halfway through no 1 The Black Echo. Love Harry.

I've seen Connelly speak a few times. He said he regrets making Harry age in real time and starting him out at age 40 meaning he had to decide what to do with him when he was too old to be any sort of detective, but he had no idea he'd be so popular.

I like Harry Bosch but have only read a few. I always read in order and am only up to #6. I hadn't thought about the series in a long time so was pleased to see that you had read it. Looking forward to getting back to it.

Great. That means I can use the early ones as Reverses as we go through UNO.

That's right.

Tiffany Santiago | 115 comments Hey everyone! I am very excited to be a Co-Captain with Kylie and Mary!!!

My biggest advice is to read whatever floats your boat! Don't forget to just have fun! This is supposed to be a fun challenge so remember that most of all!

message 56: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten | 268 comments I'm so excited! Are there other MM readers in our group? That's the genre I read most, so just curious.

message 57: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments I read more crime and historicals these days and am also catching up on classics I haven't read or read so long ago I've forgotten them. I'm not really into steamy sex romances and erotica regardless of the characters but have read gay and lesbian fiction over the years.

For many years I took books in alphabetical order each time I went to the library. I read an incredible variety that way. Found some new favourite authors and genres I would never have picked up. I did that for about 30 years and only got midway through the H section because they kept putting new authors on the previous shelves or I'd come across a series I really liked and read them all. hahaha

We have a new member for you. Please welcome Nikki.

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 311 comments Hi all,

Just checking in.

I live in Sydney Australia with my partner, daughter, 1 dog and 1 cat. I mostly read paranormal romance and paranormal cozies these days but I am a mood reader so will sometimes throw in a YA, or fantasy or historical fiction if i am in the mood for it.

Its been a couple of years since I last played Uno but I am sure i will get back in the swing of things relatively quickly. i am just in the process of planning out some of my books for this challenge and reading through the above posts. Sending through a request for the tracking spreadsheet now.

Can't wait to get started!

Kylie Standley | 83 comments Hi Nikki! Welcome to the team!

We are thrilled to have you join us this year :)

message 64: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments I have a question for our leaders. I just read the instructions for posting a Completion Post on here when we finish a book but it says that we can also add card extra options on the spreadsheet.

In previous teams the captains have asked for one or other or both methods and I'll do whatever you want but where can we list the other options on the tracking sheet?

As an aside the extra column spreadsheet entry method was actually very good for the team to spot and note down a reverse when someone listed a book they'd read.

message 65: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Standley | 83 comments We would like a completion post AND a log in the spreadsheet! The extra cards would probably be best just in the completion post, as not to clutter the tracking sheet, but if the other captains say otherwise, we will climb that bridge when we get there :)

message 66: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments No worries, will do. Thanks Kylie.

Not long to go now!

message 67: by Elisabeth (last edited Jan 28, 2023 07:54PM) (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments Well that's strange. I just added The Years by Virginia Woolf to hand 3 on the tracking sheet as a 7 card. When I run the cursor over it it shows To Kill A Mockingbird but if I click the link it goes to the correct book. Gremlins in the works!

message 68: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Standley | 83 comments That is incredibly strange!

ŷ can be darn right annoying nowadays. Especially because of the recent update (I still don't know how I feel about it)

I’ve had the same thing happen to me, on this SS and in other Challenges.

message 70: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments And now it's corrected itself.

I have My Brilliant Career to read when we kick off. It's an Australian classic written in 1901 by Miles Franklin at age 19. She was an author and feminist and has one of our top literary awards named after her.

Yesterday the 1979 movie was on TV starring the very young Judy Davis and Sam Neill and directed by Gillian Armstrong. I saw it many years ago probably not long after it came out.

After about 5 minutes in I decided not to watch it because I'm about to read the book for the first time, I will have those faces in my head when I read though.

My question for comment is: What would you have done? Book first or movie?

message 71: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Standley | 83 comments I am very much a book first, then movie person. In some aspects, it is great. However, I do tend to procrastinate when reading book series that have been turned into movies. For example, I have only read three of the Harry Potter books, which means that I have only watched three of the movies, leaving me pretty clueless about the rest of the series.

My favorite is when I know that a movie is going to come out about a book I want to read. This makes me want to read that book faster so then I can see the movie in theaters.

message 72: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten | 268 comments Definitely the book first, unless it was first a book and then novelized.

I think the original form is worth reading first, in nearly all cases. It's not always better (I can think of lots that aren't, in fact)... but I like to read the first first.

message 73: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments I've done quite a few the other way round not realising they were books. I must admit though seeing a couple of Nicholas Sparks movies put me right off reading any of the books. He seems to always kill someone off and I like a happy ending.

message 74: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 338 comments I almost always read the book first, unless as Elisabeth said, I didn't realize there was a book. Most of the time, I find the book better.

message 75: by a Contradiction (new)

a Contradiction | 26 comments Like Kylie, I am a book-first person, but I also procrastinate reading. Hence, I haven't watched a good number of movies.

Instead what I do is, if I watch the later installments of a series first, I try reading the books immediately - to understand things better.

I did a Harry Potter Readathon in 2020 and finally finished watching the movies right after.

All hyped for reading - less than 24 hours to go! :)

message 76: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments Having a memory lapse and can't find it in the rules-- if we don't finish a book we started in for example February can we use it for March or April if it's a slow intermittent read?

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 311 comments Elisabeth wrote: "Having a memory lapse and can't find it in the rules-- if we don't finish a book we started in for example February can we use it for March or April if it's a slow intermittent read?"

Yes 90% sure that any book started during the challenge can be used in whatever month its finished in.

I'm the same i.e. book before movie unless i discover there is a book/series after i watch the movie/tv series. Notable exception - The Vampire Diaries ~ i was never really interested in reading the books lol

message 79: by Mary (new)

Mary Hangen | 376 comments HI LOVELIES!!! IT IS ALMOST TIME!

I added the tab to the spreadsheet where you can record all the cards that work for a book. I will put the colored cards in the top left so we know we've got everything covered! :)

message 80: by Mary (new)

Mary Hangen | 376 comments Good morning lovelies!

For anything already listed on the February Tab because add to the all option spreadsheet so if we need to move things we can!

message 81: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten | 268 comments I'm new to this, so I have a few questions:

I'm reading for another challenge, so if I find something that works there, I should slot it in, even if I had claimed the (still empty) spot, right?

Is it better for me to finish a hand or read all my color books first? Or does it matter?

message 82: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Standley | 83 comments Whichever way you want to go about it should work! Finishing a hand gives us 15 extra points while finishing color cards gives us thirty points. As long as you finish the books you have planned for February it shouldn't matter too much unless stated otherwise by Mary :)

message 83: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Santiago | 115 comments HAPPY FEBRUARY AND BEGINNING OF UNO!!!!!!!!

May we all read our best!

message 84: by Mary (new)

Mary Hangen | 376 comments The easiest thing you can do for all us captains is list whatever you read on that first tab on the spreadsheet so we can keep track of all the options and move books where we need them. We will easily complete all of our hands.

message 85: by Mary (new)

Mary Hangen | 376 comments How is everyone doing? Enjoying their books so far?

What did every pick as their first book of UNO?!

message 86: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten | 268 comments I read 2 books from my tbr, and both were duds! But, I got them done and made some space for new ones.

Flower of Iowa seemed right up my alley. I’m from Iowa like one MC, and I’ve loved the WWI poets since high school. But though there was lots to like, the clunky writing and head hopping was too annoying.

And the less I can say about End of the Line, the better. So out of touch.

message 87: by Mary (new)

Mary Hangen | 376 comments Oh goodness, well at least you cleared up some space!

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments I finished my Yellow 9. Do I need to add the other card options to the sheet?

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 311 comments I finally started my first book for UNO : The Vampire Knitting Club Cornwall (Vampire Knitting Club Cornwall, #1) by Nancy Warren The Vampire Knitting Club: Cornwall - i had to finish a couple of others first - should be done with it in the next day or so. I will update the planning sheet shortly

message 93: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments That has the most extraordinary title, Nikki. Are the vampires knitting or is someone knitting vampires. In Cornwall. hehehe

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 311 comments Elisabeth wrote: "That has the most extraordinary title, Nikki. Are the vampires knitting or is someone knitting vampires. In Cornwall. hehehe"

Its actually a spin off of the original Vampire Knitting club series which is set in Oxford. An American girl travels to oxford to take over her grandmother's knitting shop, on the death of her grandmother and finds out that not only is she a witch and host to a knitting club for vampires of which her grandmother is actually one.

I enjoyed the original series so was happy to find the spin off

a Contradiction | 26 comments Hi all,
I'm currently reading - The Maid by Nita Prose and hoping to take long to finish this - i.e. by valentine's as I am doing a course that takes up all my time (the course finishes on 11th)

Post that I'll have more time & energy to read better and will finish all the books that I have planned for this month.

Happy reading everyone!

The Vampire Knitting Club: Cornwall by Nancy Warren
Date: Feb-6-2023

Planning spreadsheet updated - (do you want us to just update the tracking tab or slot our book on the feb tab also?) - i have just updated tracking tab for now

message 100: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments I put mine in both sheets. I find it easy to see on the February tab what cards we have open and are plentiful when choosing my next book. I know those might shift around a bit later but we have a lot of reverses for example which are less likely to move as are some of the less common cards. It means I'll look to fill one if I can.
