Jordan | 7 comments I've seen several good stand alone science fiction books. However, I've not really run across many stand alone fantasy books. Any suggestions? Fantasy and science fiction both are welcome.

I did not have the option to put this into the general folder. This was the closest applicable folder I could find.

Andy (andy_m) | 311 comments For Scifi I always recommend Fallen Dragon

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is a personal favorite as is American Gods

Also Harry Connolly released a pacifist urban fantasy novel that I REALLY love. A Key, an Egg, an Unfortunate Remark

Bryan | 111 comments I'd recommend The Iron Dragon's Daughter. It's kind of science fantasy, but in my opinion it's more fantasy than SF.

Poul Anderson also wrote some pretty good stand-alone fantasy, like Three Hearts and Three Lions and The Broken Sword.

Also, I remember reading Talion: Revenant way back in the day and thinking it was pretty cool. Not sure how it would hold up now, but there you go.

Fantasy
Alif the Unseen
Tigana
The Curse of Chalion
The Stand
The Eyes of the Dragon

Sci-Fi
Ready Player One
Snow Crash
The Martian
Timeline

Not really SFF, but it's one of my favorites: The Shadow of the Wind.

I have a shelf of the stuff I've read that is stand alone (or reads like a stand alone despite being in a series) that may have some other things of interest. It's not all SFF, but most of it is: Stand Alone

Robobobo The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams
The Drawing of the Dark by Tim Powers
On Stranger Tides, also by Tim Powers

Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie is set in his First Law universe but it's a stand alone novel.

The Martian by Andy Weir

Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay

Re: Tim Powers, I would also recommend Declare.

Other stand alone novels I've enjoyed are:
City of Bones
The Redemption of Althalus
Kraken
The Resurrectionist - Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ tells me that this is part of a series but I was not aware of that when I read the book. I think it can be treated as a stand alone novel.
Weaveworld
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
War for the Oaks
Who Fears Death

Heh. I thought there was a thread already, but didn't get around to looking for it yet.

Thanks Michele.

Neverwhere and American Gods excellent choice.

Trike | 10981 comments War for the Oaks by Emma Bull

Jack of Kinrowan by Charles de Lint

And the Devil Will Drag You Under by Jack L. Chalker

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Prepare to Die! by Paul Tobin

The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror by Christopher Moore

Joseph | 2433 comments The Mask of the Sorcerer by Darrell Schweitzer. (There's also a collection of short stories about the main character, Sekenre: The Book of the Sorcerer, but the novel itself stands perfectly well alone.)

Andy (andy_m) | 311 comments Let me echo Kevin with the First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. I cannot believe I forgot to add that book to the list!

I can't believe I forgot Miserere!

Joel Elantris, The Emperor's Soul, and Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson are all really good stand-alone books.

The Rook by Daniel O'Malley, while technically is the first book in the series, ended in such a great way that it can be read as a stand-alone in my opinion.

Century Rain by Alastair Reynolds. I really enjoyed this one quite a bit. Probably one of my top favorite science fiction books right now, however, I haven't read that many scifi.

Chris Zerby | 7 comments Pushing Ice and House of Suns, both by Alastair Reynolds, both excellent.

Joseph | 2433 comments A World Out of Time by Larry Niven if you want something a bit more old-school.
