Lyra picks up several valuable first edition books and some cd’s at a yard sale. Did this appear to be a harmless act to you or did you recognize it as foreshadowing? When attempts to kidnap her escalate, did you tie them back to the books/cds? When did you realize this was a motive?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2911 comments I figured it would come back as a big part of the plot at some point, especially when Milo showed up.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1191 comments Yes, I did figure the valuable books as a possible place where something else valuable might be hidden, right from the first. Oh, I would have been there with Lyra, wouldn't all of us?

Robin (robinmy) | 2413 comments I figured something was hidden in the books or in the camera that Mrs. Merriam pushed onto her when Lyra was leaving the sale. When the bad guys came looking for Lyra at her apartment (and found Sidney), I figured they were looking for the stuff she picked up at the sale.

I thought about the camera also. And also realized the books or cd's would play into the plot line.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3396 comments I expected the mystery would come back to these items.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2911 comments I was really glad that Lyra sent them to Texas. I just knew that there was something bad hidden somewhere in the cache and it would turn out to be a problem for Lyra.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3396 comments Your right. Now that you mentioned it, the fact that she sent them to Texas made me think they held secrets.

Exactly! Sending them any place else set off warning bells that THIS will prove to be important.
