Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments Just a new thread for our chit chat. The old one was full enough and I think there are currently no ongoing conversations.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments Welcome to Christene Paula, who looks to be another mystery reader!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments Have you voted in the polls?

Lagullande | 1131 comments Echoing the thanks of others.

I've been out of the loop for a few seasons and had been planning to come back at the end of the year, so was devastated to see that the group might no longer be here. You've inspired me to get back on the reading trail. I'll do my best to support the new Mods however I can.

And I also want to place on record my thanks and appreciation to the departing Mods. A stellar group!

Valerie Brown | 3220 comments Yay, for Don! I'm going to be expecting some interesting mysteries to be bought!

message 17: by Apple (new)

Apple | 868 comments Does anyone else ever have a book seeming to appear on EVERY list that look at, at a certain time?

I really feel that Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ wants me to read A Separate Peace by John Knowles, which I feel I had not heard of before 2 weeks ago, and now it seems to appear every time I search a task ....

I know what you mean! I usually look at the reviews and either add it to my wishlist or decide it's not for me.

I gave A Separate Peace 5 stars, but it was not an easy read emotionally.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments This is so unusual I have to comment on it. Here it is the 3rd of the month and no one has posted in the Completed Tasks thread. Are you reading? 😂

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2590 comments I am reading.

message 24: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 556 comments Haha! That is funny Elizabeth, as I finished a book last night and saw no one had posted yet and I thought "oh, I should wait- don't want to be first" LoL. I still have to write my review, so not quite ready yet, but eeks! I might be first!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments I started a Jumbo before the end of August, knowing I wouldn't pass the halfway mark before the 1st. But I keep getting interrupted with watching US Open tennis. It's going to take *much* longer than I'd planned. (But the tennis is really good.)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2590 comments I love tennis.

message 27: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5227 comments I've finished 2 books - I'll post soon;)

I just posted - and I hope there's no mistake! Joanne is right - I hesitated because I felt pressure about being first. No idea why!!

message 29: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3220 comments That’s funny - I was wondering about that too. 😂

I am reading two books, one for a 10 and one for a 15. I had just wanted to read the first para of the 15 but then got interested in his story.

Thanks for taking the pressure off! Still have not posted as the book does not fit where I thought it did 😅

Apple | 868 comments I am on my 3rd audio, and taking too much time on my hard copy, but we are painting the kitchen and pulling out hard rubbish. And I was waiting for the last tasks to see what changes I needed to make ;)

Joanna (walker) | 2250 comments @Anika -- I also adored Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. I made my in-person book club read it, to somewhat more mixed feelings. I'm definitely right in the target audience for this book--computer geeky, gamerish folks who grew up in the 80s/90s. Basically, the same people who really liked Ready Player One.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2590 comments I liked Ready Player One. There is a movie too.

That's a good sales pitch! I really liked Ready Player One - even though I potentially am older than the target audience. I'll have to put this book on my TBR.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2590 comments There is a movie -Ready Player One

Right?! I’m totally the target demographic for both Ready Player One and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow…I think I’m so firmly in that demographic that i can’t fathom anyone NOT loving this book!
While reading, it reminded me of a cross between Ready Player One and Daisy Jones & The Six—both of which were five star reads for me so it makes sense that i loved this one so much

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments I see a chance to complete my mysteries challenge this season. It will mean loading up on a couple of tasks and giving up the opportunity for any finishers bonus. But just maybe ...

Wow! Now I feel like a slacker! ha, ha..... My problem has been I seem to be attracted to mysteries from the same years (surprisingly, NOT a lack of focus!).

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments Valerie wrote: "My problem has been I seem to be attracted to mysteries from the same years"

I've had a similar problem, one probably shared by all. I'm missing a lot of early years. I can pick several up with the Dickens task - the authors were born before 1870. The Scrabble task picks up another nearly 1/2 dozen.

And just so everyone knows, this wasn't on my radar when selecting/writing tasks.

message 41: by Apple (new)

Apple | 868 comments On my phone so can’t fo links (why IS that? So annoying!), but just finished reading 84, Charing Cross Road, which includes the later Duchess of Bloomsbury Street. In the later, Helene Hanff is having her portrait painted in Russell Square.

Just started Life Class by Pat Barker, reach the third page and the character is walking towards the same Russell Square.

How often does that happen?!?

Joanna (walker) | 2250 comments L'Shana Tova -- Happy new year

I meant to post at the start of the Rosh Hashanah holiday on Friday night, but I was at services and then forgot.

I hope everyone has a sweet and happy new year.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments And to you, Joanna. Thanks for all your help. I can see your own New Year will be wonderful and the group will be beneficiaries.

message 44: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3220 comments All the best to you and your family, Joanna.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments This afternoon I started a novel by Robert B. Parker. I was maybe 3 pages in when I thought it sounded so much like Raymond Chandler. So I came to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ to read Parker’s bio. The last sentence is:

Parker's acclaim and his thorough background in classic detective literature helped earn him the somewhat unusual commission of completing a Philip Marlowe novel that the great Raymond Chandler had left unfinished.

Bingo! And why haven’t I bothered with Parker before?!!

message 46: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 2259 comments I've had a busy month! (Helping out with little new grandbaby Isabella). So I'll be doing something I don't usually do: post the month's tasks/reading one after the other. Hopefully I can keep up better for the rest of the season!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments I'm glad you've even found time to read, Deedee! We'll be glad to see what you've found time for.

Posting a lot of books at once is not much of a problem this early in the season as opposed to the last few days.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14112 comments I missed that this past weekend was halfway. (It was my granddaughter's birthday yesterday, is that a good excuse?)

Anyway, how is everyone doing? I'm on track to finish the Mystery challenge. I have visions of maybe (only maybe) finishing Celebration of Styles.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2590 comments My track is slow.

message 50: by Bea (new)

Bea So is mine, Jayme. I have been fighting a couple of reading slumps as well as have found myself busy with classes and learning through the Senior Center and the USCA's Lifelong Learning programs.

Currently I have read half the 10s, started 1 of the celebrations, and finished 1 of the 20s. I am a bit surprised as it wasn't until recently that I thought to check my progress. I doubt that I will finish any of the three sections, though.
