Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14117 comments 20.10 Letters (Owlette's Task) Read a book (fiction or nonfiction) where a character writes a letter by hand (no typing). Tell us the name of the letter writer. Personal journal and diary entries are excluded.

Please post any questions you have about Task 20.10 here.

Rebekah (bekalynn) Unless it was before typewriters, how will we know the letters were written by hand or not? Do illustrations, photos or copies of handwritten letters have to be in the book?
Could we have examples?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14117 comments The text should be clear. I think most people don’t have typewriters today. No emails or computer notes though.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14117 comments Right after I answered you, the next paragraph in my reading was opening her handbag, took out Gilbert’s letter, a hurried pencilled scrawl.

This is from a Golden Age mystery. I think such inclusion is not unusual in that genre. Perhaps others have more ideas.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14117 comments I searched Letters under "genres" and got this page:

/genres/letters

and searched "letter writers" for lists and got this:

/search?utf8...

Not everything on either of those links will work, but is something to peruse.

Bea Thanks for the links, Elizabeth. By scrolling down the first one, I found a book already on my Wishlist TBR! Cool!

Rebekah (bekalynn) Ok. I looked. But I still don’t know how you can tell the letter was not written on a typewriter without reading the book first. For example many about authors writing letters are often type written. Do we know if Virginia Woolf’s , JRR Tolkein’s , the Mitford Sisters etc letters were all hand written? I guess going with Jane Austen or the Brontes is safe. I will say on one list there was a book I have read and know she didn’t use a typewriter as she wrote them while traveling roughly thru the Rockies, often without even a roof over her head. A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains (Volume 14) by Isabella Lucy Bird

I’ll probably just wait and get an idea from what others are reading or go with books from way back in past.

Correct. This is like the somebody drinks wine/tea etc. tasks.

Rebekah (bekalynn) Would The Absolutist work for this task?

The letters referenced in the GR description are all after the fact and not referenced or written during the narrative. There may be once instance of a note, which would be enough if my memory serves. You could read it for 10.10 and then if it works change your plan. Remember, there are no combos this season.

Rebekah (bekalynn) I was looking at it for 10.10 and saw reference for letters so thought I’d ask
