This months Motif (theme) is...

"Comedy Club"

(Read a book that's guaranteed to make you laugh.)

What book did you pick? What did you think of it?

Patty Smith (pinkpurlandprose) | 37 comments Laugh out loud funny - she had me from the very first joke!

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling

Cecil Huston | 226 comments I read Native Tongue by Carl Hiaason, second in the Skink series. The wild story and dry humor always makes me laugh, but there is always a good plot buried in the madness.
My review here: /review/edit...

I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After Twenty Years Away by Bill Bryson

The book is a collection of articles written by the author for a weekly column in an English newspaper after his return to the US. He’s been away for twenty years and a lot has changed. Yet, some things, not at all.

Some of the articles are truly funny, while some just brought a smile or a quiet chuckle. I especially loved those whose experience I shared, such as going to the drive-in, or boarding a plane.

And then there are those that are thought provoking, as the author struggles with attitudes that have hardened while he was gone. Though written in 1999, many of those articles still resonate.

The book holds its own against other Bryson books. Though perhaps not as funny as A Walk in the Woods, it’s certainly on parr with In a Sunburned Country. It’s gentle touch made it well worth reading.

/book/show/2...

I don’t think anyone is surprised by my 5 star rating at this point. I love Marnie SO much. Like, she is EASILY my favourite fictional character of all time. I snort laughed my entire way through this book, but in usual Aalto fashion, the storyline was also well sprinkled with heart-pounding moments of “OH NO. Uuuugh, and now the waiting begins again

just lori (lgraber1212gmailcom) | 37 comments I searched for books that made people laugh and so I read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. It was on my TBR so I figured two birds with one stone. There was maybe one section that I thought a bit humorous, but definitely not laugh out loud. I plan on taking another shot with The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I loved the movie so I'm hoping that will be a better fit for this challenge.

Jennifer Wheeler | 111 comments If This Book Exists, You’re In the Wrong Universe - Jason Pargin
/book/show/6...

ALL THE STARS. Seriously, every single one. I lost count of how many times I laughed or snorted out loud while reading this, and I’m sure I was terribly annoying to anyone who happened to be in the room with me. I swear to Xarcrax, Jason Pargin has got a screw loose. Or maybe more than one. But since I am so ridiculously amused by his outrageously bizarre storylines, I suppose that says something about the state of my own screws. Please, Mr. Pargin, keep ‘em coming!

Deb Rouse | 20 comments Book: When you are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris.

I enjoyed the book and really found his writing style kept the pages turning easily. Although maybe not exactly my humor, I did experience some snort out loud moments, and leaving a mental note to check out other books he wrote.

Jennifer Wheeler | 111 comments Hollow Kingdom - Kira Jane Buxton
/book/show/4...

This was just.okay. It had some interesting parts, and some great humour, but it was lacking…something. I was a bit bored the majority of the time, to be honest, but I think my expectations might be partially to blame. I don’t know exactly what I expected, but it was definitely more than what this book was able to deliver. If it weren’t for the swears peppered throughout I would have classified this as YA. In fact I think I still would personally classify this as YA in terms of style and difficulty. Maybe if I had gone into it with YA expectations I would have enjoyed it more? I dunno. In any event, I didn’t enjoy this enough to keep it on my shelves, and definitely not enough to bother reading book 2 even though I already own it.

Book: Never Clean Your House During Hurricane Season by Modine Gunch - I was a book that was recommended to me and I didn't really enjoy it. I just did not find it LOL funny.

Book: Hyperbole and A Half by Allie Brosh - I really love her sense of humor throughout the book as she goes through different coping mechanism and different situations. Definitely a LOL funny book!

Challenge complete! I read That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming. This is solidly fantasy romance with a big dose of humor. This was a fun read,

Patricia | 59 comments As part of the "Comedy Club" for the month of June, I read:
Bossy Pants by Tina Fey Bossy Pants by Tina Fey - 3 stars
- Not as funny as I expected it to be. It was funnier to read 'The Funny Thing' is... by Ellen DeGeneres read in April and 'Yes Please' by Amy Poehler read in February of last year.

Indy_Chick | 65 comments I'm late posting but challenge completed in June. I read what Kindle Unlimited led me to believe would be funny, but Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come: One Introvert's Year of Saying Yes by Jessica Pan was definitely NOT funny for an introvert to read. I'm not saying I didn't chuckle a few times, but for the most part it was awkward and painful to read, like I was living it myself. I guess if I thought about it more, I would have realized this was not the pick for me. I really admire her for getting herself out there and doing these uncomfortable things.

Thanks for posting your comments. I almost picked this book. Glad to know it wasn't that funny, but it was probably funnier than the book I read!
