I have two words for you.

Quidditch

Wobble

I rest my case.

message 54: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I was under the impression that you didn't play any of those....

Anyway... I might take full responsibility for Quidditch.. but not for Wobble. I only had the idea for the latter. And what could be involved. Any challenge that came to be, had nothing to do with me. Even Bookules, that was supposed to be my baby. I had to delegate that one because life decided no goodreads time for Sonia.

message 55: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 7779 comments I loved Quidditch. And I blame (thank?) Quidditch for providing me a reason for learning how to speed read. Kind of.

message 56: by Sammy (last edited May 03, 2024 07:11AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12444 comments I didn't. Almost played quidditch last time but fell on the wrong days to be able to play along. Lucky escape! lol.

And you're saying coming up with the ideas isn't diabolically mastermindy?

And do you really believe that you uttering the words "So I was thinking..." doesn't inspire terror in certain people when you utter them? 😆

Nooo. I've never done that.

My guy just turned 21 a couple weeks ago! He will be graduating from school in June and we aren't ready for what will be coming with no routine. He thrives when there is a set routine. For many years he needed to be in his own classroom away from other students due to his behavior but the past two years he has been able to join his classmates and is enjoying having the social time. He will always need someone to help him with daily living skills and has trouble communicating but is verbal.

And yes, routine is vital. We have quite a strict routine with ours, because without it things go horribly wrong!

A visit there is on my bucket list, and I was hoping for insider info on the place 😆

Questions along those lines, yes 😆

But I also like to have locals' knowledge of where to go for the best food, sights to go see that aren't on every tour, and secret ways of sneaking in to the Grand Ole Opry's backstage area 😆

I'm Lorna, I'm 27 and live in Yorkshire with my partner of nearly 9 years and my two cats.

I'm useless at messaging in the chat but will be reading and updating in the background and will ensure to remember to check in

This is my eighth challenge (I think? 4 years of UNO and 3 TT) and I'm so excited to be on a team with some friendly faces and some new ones! Can't wait to kick this off with you all :)

I think I'm the lowest reader of us all cause I'm forever DNF'ing but will try to read some chonkers to help our points ;)

Jenny | 7779 comments Hi Lorna!
Welcome to the madhouse. I mean District One!!!!

message 84: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 7779 comments Calling District One tributes! (And Visitors to our home)

While we wait for our last two volunteers to join us, Let us get to know each other a little bit. In challenges I tend to occasionally ask very silly important questions to keep the conversation going, so here is the first pop quiz

-You are walking onto a stage with people clapping and cheering for you. What is the theme song playing you in?
-If you got your 15 minutes of fame, what would you want it to be for?
-Do you talk to your plants?
-Do you still consider Pluto to be a planet?
-If you decided to host a late night talk show, who would be your first guest(s)?
-Who was your childhood crush?
-Any current pets? Want to share pictures?
-Whiskey or vodka?
-What was your worst haircut?
-Backpacking or luxury hotels?
-Speaking of luxury, what is your dream car?
-Would you rather have a cook or a maid?
-And finally (for now), what books are you looking forward to reading for this challenge?

message 85: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 7779 comments Things to think about-
There will be two BOMs in May-
BOMs
The Malevolent Seven by Sebastien de Castell
/topic/show/...
Starts May 16th

Salt & Broom by Sharon Lynn Fisher
/topic/show/...
Starts May 25th

So, if you are interested in reading either or both of those, we get extra points. If you are interested in volunteering for DQs, please go to the threads above and volunteer. The more volunteers we put up, the better our chances!
Remember to reference our district number when you volunteer.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12444 comments -You are walking onto a stage with people clapping and cheering for you. What is the theme song playing you in? - I wanna say Let's get Rocked by Def Leppard, but it's probably more likely to be the Benny Hill Theme tune...

-If you got your 15 minutes of fame, what would you want it to be for? - I've been intending to write a book since I was about 4. Would be nice to finally get around to that! 😆

-Do you talk to your plants? - I have been known to occasionally yell "Now what the hell is wrong with you?" at one or the other...

-Do you still consider Pluto to be a planet? - Definitely count me on team Pluto.

-If you decided to host a late night talk show, who would be your first guest(s)? - Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch. I've yet to see them disappoint.

-Who was your childhood crush? - Do you have a few hours..? I started with a brief flirtation with Cliff Richard (we had Summer Holiday on video), but then when I was seven I discovered The Dukes of Hazzard and decided I was going to marry this guy when I grew up: description

-Any current pets? Want to share pictures? - One Wookie husband and one bear son, currently. 😆 We were considering finally being able to get a pet once we move, but new son-in-law is extremely allergic, and we don't want to put them off visiting!

-Whiskey or vodka? - Whisky for me (the good stuff, without the E 😜). I did have a vodka phase many years ago, but that was more financially motivated 😆

-What was your worst haircut? - I had electric blue hair as a teen that glowed insanely under a UV light. Opinions on whether cool or awful were very divided!

-Backpacking or luxury hotels? - When I was younger the former, now with arthritis the latter thanks.

-Speaking of luxury, what is your dream car? - A black 67 Chevvy Impala. Failing that an orange 69 Dodge Charger...

-Would you rather have a cook or a maid? - Maid please! Pretty please, with sugar on top. And a cherry. I'll throw in some sprinkles too.

-And finally (for now), what books are you looking forward to reading for this challenge? - Empire of the Vampire (Empire of the Vampire #1) by Jay Kristoff for starters, and also planning to finally crack open my copy of 1001 Nights. Otherwise, I'm just hoping to blast through a chunk of my TBR!

message 90: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments - You are walking onto a stage with people clapping and cheering for you. What is the theme song playing you in?
This would be my worst nightmare so how about Highway to Hell 😂

-If you got your 15 minutes of fame, what would you want it to be for?
Again would rather not have any minutes of fame but if it had to happen I'd like it to be for a heroic act or a daring rescue. It's much more likely to be for doing something daft and embarrassing myself

-Do you talk to your plants?
Yep I talk to plants, animals, inanimate objects, my car....

-Do you still consider Pluto to be a planet?
I don't really consider Pluto at all but sure why not.

-If you decided to host a late night talk show, who would be your first guest(s)?
This is not a decision I'm ever going to make (see above) but if I had to it'd be someone who seems nice and funny like Olivia Coleman. It def wouldn't be anyone I had a crush on

-Who was your childhood crush?
Hmm, I will only admit to Keanu Reeves

-Any current pets? Want to share pictures?
I have a 15 year old black cat who is currently sleeping on top of me

-Whiskey or vodka?
Definitely whisky although I'd probs be kicked out of Scotland if I said vodka

-What was your worst haircut?
When I was really young, 5 or 6, I had what was basically a bowl cut.

-Backpacking or luxury hotels?
Luxury hotels please

-Speaking of luxury, what is your dream car?
I don't really have one, as long as it's reliable and will get me where I need to go I'm happy

-Would you rather have a cook or a maid?
Cook. I do all of the cooking in my house and am fed up constantly having to think what to make.

-And finally (for now), what books are you looking forward to reading for this challenge?
There are soooo many great sounding books coming out at the moment it's difficult to choose but I'm volunteering at a sci fi / fantasy book festival at the end of the month so going to try and read some books by the authors appearing

The Book That Wouldn’t Burn (The Library Trilogy, #1) by Mark Lawrence Dragon Rider (The Soulbound Saga, #1) by Taran Matharu Evocation (The Summoner’s Circle, #1) by S.T. Gibson

message 91: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. | 309 comments -You are walking onto a stage with people clapping and cheering for you. What is the theme song playing you in? I'm feeling like Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries would work

-If you got your 15 minutes of fame, what would you want it to be for? Hopefully for doing a good deed so it's in a positive light

-Do you talk to your plants? I tend to say "Do you need water or not?"

-Do you still consider Pluto to be a planet? Yep

-If you decided to host a late night talk show, who would be your first guest(s)? The voice cast from The Loud House on Nickelodeon because it's my son's favorite show

-Who was your childhood crush? ugh, can't remember

-Any current pets? Want to share pictures? No

-Whiskey or vodka? Neither, but I love my sugar coffee drinks!

-What was your worst haircut? It's hard to explain but this experience made me scissor phobic. A woman used an electric razor to make a straight cut to take off a few inches of my hair and it made it really bushy. I have thick hair and this made it look even more thick. Ever sense then I struggle getting my hair cut.

-Backpacking or luxury hotels? Luxury hotels. I need running water, a toilet and electricity.

-Speaking of luxury, what is your dream car? An all wheel drive hybrid small SUV

-Would you rather have a cook or a maid? Cook

-And finally (for now), what books are you looking forward to reading for this challenge? I'm saving Gardens of the Moon for the challenge and plan to at least try both of the books of the month.

message 93: by Maria Jo (new)

Maria Jo | 180 comments -You are walking onto a stage with people clapping and cheering for you. What is the theme song playing you in?
The only thing I can think of for this is when I walked on stage for my piano recitals in my childhood, so no music, because I'm about to play it?

-If you got your 15 minutes of fame, what would you want it to be for?

-Do you talk to your plants?
Umm... sometimes, when they're being ridiculous.

-Do you still consider Pluto to be a planet?
Absolutely

-If you decided to host a late night talk show, who would be your first guest(s)?
I just saw a really cool interview with the Australian band for King and Country, and that's the only thing I can think of right now.

-Who was your childhood crush?
I don't remember.

-Any current pets? Want to share pictures?
No pets. I've always wanted a cat, but we don't really have a good place for a litterbox in our house right now.

-Whiskey or vodka?
Vodka, but the flavored ones. I like making strawberry lemonade with strawberry vodka.

-What was your worst haircut?
I don't remember ever disliking a haircut. My problem right now is that it's been two years since I've had one, so my ends are a mess. >_<

-Backpacking or luxury hotels?
Hotels.

-Speaking of luxury, what is your dream car?
Something that would run forever without needing maintenance.

-Would you rather have a cook or a maid?
Maid

-And finally (for now), what books are you looking forward to reading for this challenge?
I've been busy subbing during April and May, so I'm just looking forward to having more time and brain power to read again.

message 94: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 7779 comments Answering my own questions because why not?

-You are walking onto a stage with people clapping and cheering for you. What is the theme song playing you in?
In my dream scenario I am accepting the Nobel Prize for Physics, and the remaining members of Pink Floyd are on stage playing me in with Welcome to the Machine.
-If you got your 15 minutes of fame, what would you want it to be for?
Figuring out what dark matter and dark energy actually are.
-Do you talk to your plants?
Usually no, but I do apologize to them sometimes for neglecting them.
-Do you still consider Pluto to be a planet?
Yes, in my heart, but no in reality.
-If you decided to host a late night talk show, who would be your first guest(s)?
William Shatner and Richard Dawkins
-Who was your childhood crush?
-William Shatner and Shaun Cassidy
-Any current pets? Want to share pictures?
Two lovely kitties-
description
description
-Whiskey or vodka?
Whiskey unless I need something with citrus in the summer months.
-What was your worst haircut?
An awful shag cut
-Backpacking or luxury hotels?
I like both, but luxury sounds perfect right now.
-Speaking of luxury, what is your dream car?
Either a Bugatti Veyron (sp) or a 1971 Jenson Interceptor
-Would you rather have a cook or a maid?
I want a maid. I am looking at my house right now, and I want a maid today.
-And finally (for now), what books are you looking forward to reading for this challenge?
The Bee Sting by Paul Murray Reamde by Neal Stephenson Generation Ship by Michael Mammay The Book of Ile-Rien The Element of Fire & The Death of the Necromancer (Ile-Rien, #1-2) by Martha Wells

message 97: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12444 comments Right now I'd settle on having a room to myself for more than 2 minutes a day. Once I have one of those I'll figure out the book thing, lol.

In my teens it would have been horror, in my 20s fantasy, right now... No clue! lol.

message 98: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 7779 comments I have the seed of a sci-fi idea going around in my head, but I am completely stuck on the very very important opening idea.
I am trying to come up with a thing (even a small thing) that every country in the UN could agree on, or agree on enough to actually enforce.

Shockingly, I have not come up with that thing yet. Ideas happily accepted!
