This is the first book in the long (75 books) series about Inspector Maigret. It was published in 1930 and has a definite "noir" feeling - lots of scenes at night, action moves from fancy hotels to seedy bars to deserted waterfronts. Terms referring to Jews and women are of the time, thus awkward today. The plot was a bit convoluted, but the main thing I didn't like was that Maigret is too much of a superhero. He doesn't sleep for 3 days, gets seriously wounded, but keeps on doggedly pursuing the criminal. (His poor wife only knows that each day she cooks for him and gets a message that he's not coming home.) I have read one or two others in t he series and I seem to remember that Maigret, like Poirot, never changes and doesn't have much interior life.
