I have to be honest and say that this is one I might not read in October. That is simply because I have read it multiple times and just reread it within the past year again. I own the entire series and it is one of my all time favorites, if not my favorite over all.
This first book is a good introduction to Harry and some of the other main characters. Trust me, the series just gets better as it continues.
I love Harry's self-depreciating sarcasm, as well as his snark to certain others.
The audiobooks are fantastic to listen to also, but make sure that the narrator is James Marsters. He does a great job. I tried to listen to one of the books by a different narrator and it was horrid.

I read several books of this series about ten years ago. I'm hoping to find an audiobook. I seem to be doing better with audiobooks right now.
Thanks for the tip about the narrator.

The waiting list is long for this audiobook so I've ordered a physical copy from the library. If I can I will read if not I'm on the waiting list for the audiobook. I think what I'm going to do is catchup with some of the other books I didn't get through from earlier in the year provided I can get audiobooks.
Wow! I just checked and the waiting list for me would be 6 weeks. That seems so odd since it is an older book. Oh well. Definitely don't stress about it. We don't have to operate on a specific time frame.

Summary
HARRY DRESDEN WIZARD
Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates. No Love Potions, Endless Purses, or Other Entertainment.
Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he's the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things—and most don't play well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a—well, whatever. There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks.
So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get interesting.
Magic - it can get a guy killed.
