This thread is for discussing the book The Shining by Stephen King, if possible focusing the discussion on it being banned, but any discussion of it is fine.

Jennifer W | 78 comments So I'm a big ol' wimp when it comes to horror. I've never read Stephen King. My mom and grandma love his horror books and I'm pretty sure they've read all of them. But I have seen the movie The Shining, so *maybe* I could handle the book? If I read it before noon, on sunny days.... lol

I found the movie version of The Shining boring so I never was interested in reading the novel (but generally, I have found reading Stephen King less problematic and less frightening than watching Stephen King movies).

Me either or seen any of the movies or anything in the horror genre. I watched Ghost Hunters and they visited the supposedly haunted hotel that inspired Stephen King to write The Shining.

The fact is that although in my opinion many Stephen King movies are much more horrifying and creepy than the novels are, it does seem as though King's books are more apt to get banned and censored.

I think the novels are definitely creepier and much better than the movies, but I loved The Shining. The sequel, not so much. Misery wasn't that bad but I can't think of another one that I thought was any good. Do you think they'll start banning movies from libraries?

Jennifer W | 78 comments I mean, nothing would surprise me at this point. I wonder if the ratings system for movies would keep that to a minimum?

That's a really good question. I remember when they were discussing adding PG-13 to the ratings system for movies. It was hugely controversial. I find it helpful, and especially so for video games. But is it limiting access?

Jennifer W | 78 comments Both my local (very tiny, I rarely even use it, go to a bigger one in the nearby city) and school library sent notices that the librarians do not monitor what children check out. School library obviously wouldn't have R rated movies, but the public one certainly does. But again, I'm in NY, we have very few book bans, so I don't think movie bans are coming anytime soon. Other places in this country... who knows??
