Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19156 comments It’s been a year. It continues to be one. If you are like me, you have a pile of good intentions sitting next to your bed (and desk, and front door, and couch) glaring at you for not reading them this year.

Let’s get another thing off our list. This is the Loose Threads challenge where I want you to read something you really intended to read this year for whatever reason and just have not gotten there yet. Is it for a challenge, YLTO or otherwise? Is it because you promised the person who recommended and/or leant you the book you would finally get to it in 2024? A series you swore you would finish in 2024? Is it one you just personally promised yourself that 2024 would be the year?

This is the chance. Tidy up one loose thread in terms of your books for 2024 and have my permission to feel a little smug about it, as you achieved it. We all need that feeling right now, I think.

General Rules:

1. The book may be in any format - paperback, ebook, audiobook.
2. The book may be combined with the Year Long Challenge and the Group Themed Read.
3. The book must be read between November 1 - November 31, 2024 (based on your local time zone).
4. The challenge is for one book. You may read more books if you chose but you may only report one.
5. The book must be 175 pages or more determined by the issue you read.

In the case of ebooks & audiobooks, use the hardcover or paperback edition to determine page length. From the book page, select “all editions, then select the first paper edition as your guide. If reading an ebook and there is no paper edition, the ebook book must be at least 250 pages. If reading an audiobook and there is no paper edition, your book must be a minimum of 6 hours long.

I finally read The Wolf Border and I loved it!

This fits the criteria is two ways; it's part of the YLTO annual challenge, and it was recommended to me by a to me by someone who I promised I'd get to it this year.

I would describe this as a rewilding story with an excellent human drama thrown in. The writing it beautiful and brings nature right to you. It is set in England, near to the Scottish border, in the near future. I'm so glad I finally got around to this one and could honestly rave about it to my friend.

I readThe Burden of Proof because my H and I watched Presumed Innocent earlier this year and decided we should pick up this series. We kept putting it off for other books so this was just the push I needed.

It was an ok read not the jaw dropping drama of the first book but I was kept interested in the characters as written.

Length 527 pages- 4 points
Reason 3 - made a deal to read it this year-3 points

I read The Bullet That Missed, had the urge to make a space for it on my annual challenge list.

While the plot is fathomable, I enjoyed seeing the MCs following the lead, especially Joyce's diary. Now I feel like I need to read the next in the series asap.

3 pts 412 pages
4 pts YLTO challenge
2 pts other group's challenge
2 pts second to last in the series

I read Angel of Vengeance. This is Book #22 in the series and I have been anxiously waiting to read it as Book 21 ended on a cliffhanger.

I did like it and awarded it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Points: 6 (Total)
3: It was 416 pages
3: I have had this book since it came out but had many others to read first. I promised to read it because a friend and I read each one that comes out and get together and discuss it.

I read Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones bc it has been on my shelf TBR for a couple of years, and it fit the criteria for the next read of my YLTO Hiking Challenge along with this monthly challenge.

I did think it was a good general overview of the whys and how-to's of habit building and some underlying insight into the brain science behind our habits. The anecdotal stories were interesting. It probably is even better as a workshop where you read a chapter and then work on applying the criteria to your specific habits that you would like to develop. I listened on audible while driving and did not do this, but am considering a re-read with notebook in hand!

Points: 4 Points for YLTO Challenge, 3 Points for 306 pages
Total Points: 6

I read The North-West Is Our Mother: The Story of Louis Riel's People, the Metis Nation. My intention at the beginning of the year was to read the books that have been on my TBR shelf more than two years. This is the oldest remaining book on my TBR, added in 2021. I've been putting off reading it due to the book's length.

This is an excellent non-fiction book of the Métis Nation, from its formation in the 1700s. The book is written by Jean Teillet, a great grandniece of Louis Riel. It is well researched and full of detail. It's an important part of Canadian history, seldom told from the Métis perspective as it is here.

Points
4 points - Length (592 pp)
3 points - You promised someone (me!) you would read it this year

I read Into the Wild.

I'm not having too much time to read "just because" books, so at the beginning of the year I planned for 4 books I wanted to read this year that were not for my courses. This book was one of them.

I loved it. I gave it 5 stars.

Points: 1 point (288 pages)

Total score: 1 point (embarrassing...)

I read Any Human Heart because it is a book I bought about 4 years ago, and it’s been on the shelf waiting for me to pick it up.
I really liked it. It’s a genre I enjoy, (historical fiction), and also written by one of my favourite authors.

Points:
528 pages. 4 points
I promised myself I would read it this year (as I have every year since I bought it) 3 points

Total score: 7

There was a birthday breakfast where the boyfriend and his three siblings made breakfast for the FMC and gave her a gift, but I'm not sure it really qualifies as a celebration.

I read The Dark Mirror. This book has been on my tbr for a long time and I've been intending to read it as a priority since then. Other things got in the way, and the priority to read it lessened. I enjoyed it quite a bit even though it took a while for me to warm to it. I didn't enjoy it as much as some of Juliette Marillier's other books.

Scoring:
Pages - 4 pts (book was 561 pgs paperback)
Martinmas - 2 pts. There were several celebrations in the story.

Total points - 6

At least there was one advantage to reading a chunkster.

I read We Solve Murders. I used it for the annual challenge, but it came out in September and it took me until November to work it in, despite my being very eager to read it as soon as it came out. I liked it, although, I miss the Thursday Murder Club folks.

What did you read? - Snowblind

Why you read it? - For another challenge other than YLTO activities

Did you like it? - Enough. I've been wanting to pick up a Ragnar Jonasson for a while now. This was a strong debut but wasn't perfect. Fantastic feeling of place though. That claustrophobic feeling of being in a snowed in town, cut off literally from the rest of the world due to the weather, with a murderer running around.

2 points - 399-300pp
2 points - For another challenge other than YLTO activities (I know, favouritism)
