The Baudelaire children, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, are orphaned when their wealthy and kind parents are killed in a home fire. They must then adjust to life with their distant relative, the evil Count Olaf, who wants to steal their inheritance. I initially read this children's book with my son when he was young, so it brought back fond memories of reading together. It is, of course, a sad and bleak story, as we are warned from the outset. The writing is intentionally simple due to its target audience, and it includes explanations of terms younger children might not understand. It is easy to root for these imaginative kids who love to read. I listened to the audiobook this time, and it is fabulous. It is read by a full cast and the narrator is Tim Curry. The audio really brings the story to life. Recommended for children who can handle dark stories without happy endings. It would have been too dark for me when I was young, but my son enjoyed it when he was nine.
3.5 for the book, 5 stars for the audio performance
