SarahKat | 5993 comments This thread is to discuss The North Face of the Heart, a prequel to the Trilogía del Baztán series by Dolores Redondo.

Pages: 497 pages

Length: 1 month (January)

Participants: Valerie, Lorraine

Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

Here are some questions to help get the conversation started! Feel free to look up discussion questions specific to this book or come up with your own. Just make sure any questions that contain spoilers are under spoiler tags.
Discussion questions are not required but may be a fun way to talk about the book and get to know each other!

Prior to starting:
What prompted you to join this buddy read?
Have you read this author before? What do you think of their other books?

Mid-read:
What character or ideas do you relate to the most and why?
Do you have any favorite quotes or scenes?

After reading:
What was enjoyable or not-so-enjoyable about this book?
Did this book change your perception about anything, either within the book (character development) or in real life?

Valerie Reyes | 1072 comments Starting this tomorrow.

Valerie Reyes | 1072 comments About a quarter way through at the end of chapter 19. There are certainly a lot of different threads to keep track of apart from the actual murders! Traumatic backstories (not yet fully revealed) for Amaia and Dupree, Katrina and New Orleans (with all the scandalous failures that event highlighted). I did find it a bit too complicated to be immediately gripped but I am definitely being sucked in. Still a lot of mysteries to be solved or revealed.

Lorraine | 2171 comments I also started. I am at chapter 5. I know I’ve read this book a few years ago but do not remember all, which is nice. I am also gripped! Tomorrow is a leisure day so I hope to catch up to you.

Lorraine | 2171 comments I finished part 1 of the book. I am starting to remember some parts but not enough to lose interest in the story. And I am spending more time in learning all the events that surrounded Katrina which I did not do the first time. Amaia and Dupree are very interesting character.

Valerie Reyes | 1072 comments Also at the end of part 1. I agree that they are interesting characters. We know rather more about the past traumas of Amaia but there is still a big reveal to come for Dupree I feel. We seem to being led to a specific suspect but it’s too early for there not to be plenty more twists and turns before this all gets solved.

Valerie Reyes | 1072 comments At around 3/4 at the end of chapter 52. Certainly a heady mix of malevolence between human evil and the darker side of Voodoo and witchcraft- all quite fascinating how these traditions continue alongside the lighter side of healers and shamans. Very definitely the case here in Mexico. Several threads are now coming together now and we know more about Dupree in particular. Just not sure how, or if, the murders are connected to any of this. Not convinced that the arrest will be the end of that strand of the plot.

Lorraine | 2171 comments I love books where you have Voodoo or witchcraft. Or old beliefs that are strange and that us modern people, have problems to understand. Like stories happening in Sardinia or Corsica! Even though it was my second read, I found that story very interesting and will keep my five stars rating. I hope to continue with the series. (view spoiler)

Valerie Reyes | 1072 comments Finished. This was a very rich and complex read, and I do think that in the first half it sometimes lost focus and pace. However, overall a captivating and surprising read which I really enjoyed. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
