The other book I'm looking for I want the dead tree version of this specific edition.
by Rumer Godden. For the charming illustrations & the plan of the dolls' house. I was able to read it at Open Library years ago, but I would like my own copy. I probably won't source from overseas though as postage so expensive now.

I found The Optimist's Daughter finally for an acceptable price and free postage on eBay the other day.

When I saw Pastel I thought I was seeing things. I didn't think it would be in Public domain yet.

Carol, I looked up that edition on AbeBooks--Boy howdy did I get sticker shock! US$50+ (that's a first edition) to US$150 (that's a signed by author edition). There are other soft cover editions that are somewhat cheaper, but not the particular one you want.
Yes I was too slow once over here. From memory NZ$20-30.
I always look when I'm in an op (charity) or secondhand shop.

I did know & I won't read the work of living authors there. It's pretty much the last resort for me, as in NZ I can't download on to my kindle.
With Miss Happiness & Miss Flower, for me it has to be the original artwork as that is my childhood memory. Also the plans for the dollhouse aren't in all the newer editions. Maybe the copyright owner wouldn't give permission for them to be reproduced?
I don't know if you are able to see this link & if it will show NZ prices;

The edition I want is available in NZ - but NZ$100! (US$57 atm) I just can't justify spending that much.

& I'm really sorry that happened to you Elinor! Hard enough for authors to make a living as it is.

Yes, The Writers Union of Canada is up in arms but hasn’t been able to win. I have found my books offered online in a few other places as well. It’s the nature of the beast, meaning the internet.
I remember my & Hana's (among other people's) reviews being scraped off ŷ & put on dodgy download sites. It was actually author Courtney Milan who alerted readers that there was a problem. I can't remember how she did that - probably came to the old Feedback group. There was some sort of takedown message you could send to the website's ISP, but I very soon got sick of that it was sort of like dealing with a many-armed hydra. No idea if it still happens.
But I had some good news today!
I was in the dump shop & a reknowned local book hoarder was there. He looked at me & said. "You were looking for a Rumer Godden book weren't you?"
Scarcely daring to breath, I said, "Yes, Miss Happiness and Miss Flower & he said, "I have it" (& another of her children's books - not Little Plum)
He warned me it is in really rough condition, but I said I don't care. Wouldn't it be awesome if it is the edition I love?
He's said he will put it in his jeep (which is jammed full of books) & give them to me next time he sees me. (really small town)

I don't think B ever forgets anything about books!
He lives on the approach road to our place, so if I see him outside it I'll stop the car & ask.

& I did see B yesterday loading more books into one of his garden sheds. (I haven't seen his garage open for a while, but a few years ago when it was open all you could see was a wall of books - no corridor to get in!)
Will you look at what I scored!!!
He just charged me NZ$2!!!
Miss H & Miss F in NZ won't be worth as much as the prices we were talking the other day as it is ex library, but Miss plum - yeah valuable.
He said he has another of RG's children's books 'somewhere'. Just have to wait for it to surface.

I had two & have now found the main one.
I'm a Georgette Heyer fanatic & finally found Pastel on Amazon at a price I was willing to pay.
I certainly didn't want to pay over NZ$75 for a book that its own creator hated.
I have started it & after a goodish beginning I'm starting to see why GH hated it. very stilted.
