Maia | 2 comments Hii I’m about 30 pages into this book at the minute but I don’t seem to be as immersed into it as I was with some of Steinbecks other books.

I also have just been in a reading slump so i’m wondering if that’s maybe why

Should I keep reading it to see if it picks up or should I just come back to it in a few weeks ??

Paul Abrams | 2 comments I believe once they are on their journey you will be more invested in the family. it's also important to read to the end to understand the full meaning of the story.

Franky | 467 comments The chapters alternate between the focus on the literal plot and then there are chapters that are more metaphorical in nature. So it probably takes a bit to get going and get used to it. Of course, I'm speaking as someone who loves this novel. But as Paul stated, I think once you get a feel for the journey of the Joads and others who migrate, you will feel a little more invested.

The students always complained about why there is a chapter dedicated to a turtle crossing the road. They didn't recognize the symbolism until much later.
