This thread will explain how our bookshelf works to anyone who finds it daunting.

I will explain what shelves we have, what's on them, and why. You'll learn a lot in this thread.

Let's start out by listing each important shelf and summarize the titles assigned.

action-series (49)
Better-than-average series of the 1960s & 70s. William Arden, Mike Barry, Andrew York, Philip Atlee, Ian Fleming.

classic-series (28)
The pre-eminent series of the entire genre. LeCarre's 'Smiley' series, Deighton's 'Palmer'; Hall, McCarry.

classic-standalones (71)
Superb, individual, non-series books like 'The Day of the Jackal' or 'Black Sunday'.

currently-leading-the-field (17)
Authors who form the current crop of 'luminaries' in the genre (Steinhauer, Silva, Furst).
*If you want to add a new Jack Reacher novel, here's where it goes*.

mens-adventure (54)
Lurid, high-testosterone series like 'The Executioner', 'the Destroyer', 'Death Merchant', 'The Eliminator', etc.

nonfiction-classics (12)
Established, iconic works of research or journalism; such as 'Dispatches'.

nonfiction-newer (34)
Assortment of recent entries to the ranks of non-fiction. Things like 'Operation Mincemeat'.

'prolific moderns' (61)
Authors like Robert Ludlum, Clive Cussler, Colin Forbes, Gerard de Villiers, et al.

'prolific & obscure' (89)
All sorts of obscure and unheard-of from the 50s, WWII, and earlier. If you need a new discovery, here they be.

newcomers (83)
The most active and busy author-zone today. All the 'recent arrivals' with accompanying hoopla. Un-vetted, wet-behind-the-ears. The ones everybody's yakking about.

tradecraft (7)
Skill building, esoteric-technical-topics, lore acquisition.

authors-in-residence (126)
All the books published by our authors-in-residence.
