WINTER CHALLENGE 2009-2010 COMPLETED TASKS

Finished 30.7:

It also fits tasks 10.5 (my month would be September 2009, where it appears), 20.2 (15.6 and 25.6), and 30.1a.
TOTALS:
Points: 30
Books: 3
Pages: 876
Tasks: 1

Number of Books Read - 4
Number of Pages Read - 1175
Number of Tasks Completed - 3

My total is now 115.

I really enjoyed this book. It's filled with social horror and manipulation and certainly shows the seedier side of humanity.
This story says a lot about social standing and expectations and restrictions.
For all his faults (and actions), Balram is a man of principle and fairness. He believes in treating people as people and, although there is always a social pecking order, he believes in sincerity and honor in those positions. He also believes in responsibility to one's fellow man.

Read Before I Wake by Robert Wiersema (code 133) and The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie (code 385)

Task 15.8 - SILVER SCREEN CELEBRATIONS
A. Read A Book That Relates To Any Holiday That Occurs During This Challenge.
A Redbird Christmas A Novel by Fannie Flagg
B. Watch A Film That Involves That Same Holiday -
I watched the original 'Miracle on 34th Street' the other day. It's still holds up so well as a classic!
New Points = 15
Total Points for Challenge = 35

20.3 Group Read--The Stupidest Angel by CHristopher Moore and I posted my discussion information.

I read Seasons Revenge by Henry Kisor
(qualifies for 5.8 cozy mystery and 15.8 silver screen holiday book portion)

20.3 The Stupidest Angel A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror, Version 2.0

Books Read: 2
Total Pages Read: 577

I read Voyager by Diana Gabaldon and The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley for task 25.8.
Voyager took forever but it was a re-read for me and I loved it just as much the second time as the first.
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie was a book that I picked up at the library purely out of curiosity, not knowing a thing about it until after I got home. I'm giving it 4 stars, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the author is planning on continuing the series. A very quick, enjoyable read.
That brings me to:
Books Read: 2
Pages Read: 1,351
Total Points: 25
I'd also like to claim a 'ticket' for Voyager, because it's over 1000 pgs. The way I understand it, I'd have to still read a 500 and 750 page in order to claim all three, correct?

15.8 Silver Screen
I read The Christmas Mink and Other December Tales from the North Woods and give it 4 stars. Whimsical and wonderful. I look forward to reading if every Christmas and am glad I won it on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. John-Richard Thompson is a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Author
I watched the following movies too (can you tell I have a kid :-) ??:
A Merry Monkey Christmas (Curious George)
The Santa Clause
Mickey's Christmas Carol
Charlie Brown's Christmas
Disney's Prep and Landing
Tasks Completed: 6
Points for this task: 15
Points thus far: 80/1100
Books read: 11
Pages read: 3365 (updated 12/9)

it matches 15.3 beacause it is wriiten by a girl and about a girl.
it would match 5.1 because they made a disney movie about this book.
I finished 25.2, Gina's Friendship task with:
The Recipe Club A Tale of Food and Friendship
If this book was a "tale of food and friendship" then I must have a very different definition of friendship. I hope I value my friends and honor their hopes, dreams, and ambitions. We come from a similar place of understanding- and even if we don't agree with each other's decisions, we respect the choices. We try hard not to be jealous, competitive, or petty- and if we sometimes are, then we're upfront and laugh about it. We try to be honest, but considerate; supportive, but realistic; and present for the good times and bad.
This book had 80 recipes, but I wasn't interested in any of them- and their place in the book felt forced and trite.
I suppose after reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society any other epistolary novel would pale in comparison, but this book was a disappointment.

New Tasks:
35.3 About Time: Born on a Blue Day Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant by Daniel Tammet
The author does a fantastic job at giving us a glimpse inside how his mind works, to the point of even drawing pictures of how he sees certain things. The book takes us through his life up to the present. The only thing I found jarring about this book was the different in writing style/tone between the past and the present. The writing for the present is a lot choppier and less descriptive than for the past.
Old Tasks:
5.1 Disney: (Beauty and the Beast) Beauty by Robin McKinley

5-8 A Face at the Window-Sarah Graves. This is from the Home Repair is Homicide series and takes place in Maine where I live so it's extra fun!
10-2 Claire by Leslie Burton Blades, a great Gutenberg find. Lawrence, one the the main characters is blind.

FINISHED:
25.8
Commencement - J. Courtney Sullivan
I really liked this book - it wasn't predictable at all and the author didn't tell the story in chronological order, which was refreshing (4 stars)
SuperFreakonomics: Tales of Altruism, Terrorism, and Poorly Paid Prostitutes - by Steven D. Levitt
In my opinion, this book wasn't as good as the first one, but was still an interesting read (3 stars)
TOTAL POINTS = 25

Princess in Waiting by Meg Cabot (series about a female lead character, written by a woman), and
I Wear the Maternity Pants in This Family by Susan Konig (memoir written by a woman)

5.8: Lean Mean Thirteen by Janet Evanovich
15.6. Stardust by Neil Gaiman. Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Author
Best gift I received: Many years ago, my husband (then boyfriend) gave me a telescope for my birthday and wrote on the card that his intention was to give me the stars. I just realized how fitting this book was, since Tristran's intent was the same!
DONATED: Diapers and formula to the local young mothers' relief.

Two more tasks to report:
25.5 Odd Man Out - I read The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño. I enjoyed it, but it was not an easy read. It is formatted at first and at the end as a diary and in between, as short interviews with a bunch of people about members of an obscure poetry movement in Mexico.
30.1 Book/Movie
A. Book written in the last ten years I read -
Shiver by Maggie Steifvater. It is basically Twilight with werewolves instead of vampires. Oddly enough I enjoyed Twilight more. This book is incredibly similar (girl with absent parents starts tortured/chaste relationship with magical creature that can eat her.) I did like it though, and will pick up the second book in the series. It's a fun, easy read.
B. Keeping with the werewolf theme, I read Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause, which was made into a horrible movie in 2007 by MTV films. I say the movie is horrible because it completely changes the entire book (the characters, the ending, etc.), and it is only redeemed by the fact that Hugh Dancy and Olivier Martinez are in the movie and they are hot. Lol. I was joking with my co-worker (a fellow librarian) that I enjoyed this book because it was so bad that it was good. Much more risque, like a Christopher Pike book or something.

I finished 25.9, Bridgit's World of books with:

My first points in my first challenge. This book was for my book club and could fit into a number of challenges but I wanted to get the biggest bang for my 702 pages. This book was long with many characters. Lehane's a great writer. I still only give it 3 stars. I'm on the board with 35 points!

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel which was awarded th 2009 Booker Prize 5 Stars
Wonderfully detailed story of Thomas Cromwell and his role the matter of the dissolution of the marriage of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon.
This is the first ebook I read--took longer than I anticipated.

15.1 Make Me Laugh
The Serial Killers Club by Jeff Povey. I give this 2 stars, it didn't really make me laugh and I thought there were a bunch of plot holes. And I watched Shaun of the Dead, which was much more enjoyable :)
15.8 Silver Screen Celebrations
Hercule Poirot's Christmas by Agatha Christie. I gave this 4 stars, good story. And I watched Holiday Inn.
25.5 Odd Man Out
Beach House by R. L. Stine. I gave this 3 stars, it was pretty good.

35.3: Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks with a Circus by James Otis 12/7

10.3 Renaissance - African-American
Santa & Pete A Novel Of Christmas Present And Past by Christopher Moore
A lovely Christmas story about an African-American boy living in Harlem during the mid-1900’s. His grandfather drives a bus in NY and acts as a roving storyteller providing insight into the history of the city. At Christmastime, “Santa and Pete is one of the stories that the grandfather tells to his special group of regular riders. The boy rides with him every Saturday and develops a deep bond, an appreciation for the meaning of his African-American heritage and a love of story-telling. He ultimately becomes a writer. (3 stars)
15.8 Silver Screen
The Christmas List A Novelby Richard Paul Evans
An inspirational story of redemption good man gone bad and his life review. A fatal accident of another man with his name ends up with a newspaper erroneously printing his obituary. The article forces him to look at his influences on others around him. Sort of a modern blend of A Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life. (3 stars)
I also watched for the 100th time "It's A Wonderful Life" - wonderful, inspirational movie.
