What book(s) are you reading right now? PNR or otherwise. ;) If you have a minute, why not talk a little bit about the book? Basic plot, werewolf/vampire/what have you, is it part of a series, etc. :)

I'm currently reading Witch Blood by Anya Bast, American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang, and Shakespeare's The Tempest for class (which is almost over, woo! I'm really looking forward to a few weeks of sweet, unadulterated pleasure reading.).

message 2: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I just finished Evermore by Lynn Viehl last night. Loved it! I am also reading:
1. Her Every Pleasure - Gaelen Foley
2. The Secret Bride - Diane Haeger
3. Dark Needs at Night's Edge - Kresley Cole
A historical romance, a historical fiction, and a PNR. I like a little variety.

Jessie | 128 comments Currently on "The Good, The Bad, and the Undead" Kim Harrison.

Have "Beyond Control" and Sookie 5 on the backburner : )

message 4: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I am reading Christine Feehan's Fever which includes a short story from an anthology and the book originally released as Wild Rain. It's about Leopard-people instead of her Carpathians. Not sure how I like it though. Too many parallels with the Carpathians.

I have Kat Richardson's Greywalker and Poltergeist sitting here waiting for me and I'm eagerly awaiting the new Sookie book.

Lil (lilmar) | 22 comments Ooo, I didn't know the newest Immortal series is out! Amazon, here I come!

And by the way, hello!

Lil

message 6: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I started a Kim Harrison book, the Rachel Morgan, The Hollows series but I couldn't get thru it so right now, it's shelved and I moved on to "Touch the Dark" by Karen Chance. It's pretty good so far. I think I'll go back to Anita Blake until I get fed up with the series.

message 7: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I'm waiting for Sookie 8 to come out this month. Soooo excited!

message 8: by Jordan (last edited Feb 25, 2009 02:34AM) (new)

Jordan (jordieheartsbooks) | 3 comments I just finished the first 2 Merry Gentry books by Laurell K. Hamilton. I'm about halfway through New Moon by Stephanie Meyer. I have Eclipse by Meyer on deck, and Kim Harrison's first 2 Rachel Morgan's books behind that. Holding out for Blood Noir and money for the other Merry Gentry books.

message 9: by Evelina (new)

Evelina | 5 comments I just finished Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost--so good! Although the ending disappointed me. I hope there's a sequal.
I also loved Wicked--witch and curse, by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie. Whew! amazing! Anyone else read it?

message 10: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Evelina - There is a sequel to Halfway to the Grave that just came out this week. It is called One Foot in the Grave.

Glad to see so many have liked this one because I have bought both books, but haven't gotten to them yet. I'll have to move them up to the top of my to read list!

I'm so excited about One Foot In The Grave. :D Now, I just have to decide if I want to go ahead and order it from Amazon or be patient and pick it up next time I'm near Borders...

message 12: by calicheri (new)

calicheri | 39 comments I just finished Dark Needs at a Night's Edge by Kresley Cole. I wasn't sure what to expect because AAR gave it a D, but I liked it. The lady who did the review hadn't read any of the other books in the series, she thought the whole world was too complicated. I wonder who picks who reviews which books.

message 13: by Aelin (new)

Aelin Lovelace (aelinlovelace) | 5 comments Cheri: It's asinine to pick up the, what, 4th? 5th? book in a series and expect to be able to understand everything. It's easier to do in romance, because some series are stand-alone, but you pick up an urban fantasy series and try that? You are S-C-R-E-W-E-D.

My reading... *cough*... I'm going through a "historical" phase at the moment. I'm reading Theft of Shadows by Naomi Bellis (which has paranormal elements, so I guess it counts *g*) and Master by Colette Gale right now. :)

message 14: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I'm about halfway through Dark Needs at Night's Edge, and I love it. Of course, I've also read the rest of the series. What moron reviews the fourth book in a series without having read the first three?

message 15: by calicheri (new)

calicheri | 39 comments I don't think it's fair to the author. I read a different review of a paranormal by a reader who didn't like para's. She said "Well if you want to believe there are witches and vampires all around you..." I thought "Well I do while I'm reading this book." I don't think you can do a real review of a genre you don't like.

I finished up Witch Blood, and I've started Linnea's Down Home Zombie Blues. I'm REALLY liking it so far! The writing is great, and I like the twist on the typical zombie.

message 17: by Morgan (new)

Morgan (mlhiggins84) I just started the new Sookie Stackhouse book, From Dead to Worse!! So glad its finally here.

message 18: by Linnea (new)

Linnea (linneasinclair) | 96 comments Thanks, TDF! It was a blast writing the book. Bahia Vista is actually St Pete, FL and a lot of stuff in there came from my years as a private detective in St Pete/Tampa. It was really interesting (and not always easy!) melding SF, romance and police procedural into one novel.

If you have any questions on the book or the characters, just flag me down. I'll be over there at the bar, third seat from the end on the left. ;-) ~Linnea

message 19: by Linnea (new)

Linnea (linneasinclair) | 96 comments Jennifer, Cheri, Nonny and all, I have the same problem recently when a SHADES OF DARK (Book 2 in the Gabriel's Ghost series) was reviewed by a reviewer who hadn't read GABRIEL'S. The ARCs all went out with *specific* instructions that any reviewer should be familiar with the series. This one admitted she wasn't and admitted she was confused. ::pounds head on desk::

Being an author means sometimes feeling as if you're in a world of people frantically pulling on a door clearly marked PUSH...

;-) ~Linnea

Ahvenge | 2 comments I'm reading the Mercedes Thompson series. I learned about it on one of the threads here. Thanks!

message 21: by Cassandra (last edited May 08, 2008 05:44AM) (new)

Cassandra | 49 comments I'm reading the most recent Kresley Cole, which I hadn't realized was out till I read here that someone else was reading it :) So, thanks!

About reading things and reviewing them out of order, I experienced an exception to this with Kresley. I accidentally started the "Immortals After Dark" series with book 2, then accidentally read book 3 thinking it was book 1, then finally read book 1. I loved book 2, adored book 3, and LOATHED book 1. If I had read book 1 first, I would have dropped the author in disgust and never read another thing she wrote, which would have been sad because the things I hated about the first book are absolutely nowhere to be found in any of the others... And I am loving book 4 so far :)

message 22: by Keely (new)

Keely | 8 comments Hey Cassandra, I loved book 4 as well. Book 5 comes out the last week of May. It's Cade (the demon)and the human girl's story. I love the Valkyries the most. I want Regin's story, and Nix.

message 23: by Tricia (new)

Tricia | 39 comments I just started "The Darkest Night" by Gena Showalter.

message 24: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 49 comments Thanks for the great news, Keely! I can make it till May. I wasn't exactly waiting for Cade's story, but it should be a good read since it's Kresley. I'm also waiting for Nix's story :)

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Greywalker by kat Richardson. I lovig it. It had me ensnared since page one.

message 26: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I just finished The Lunatic Cafe by Laurell K. Hamilton and I'm probably either gonna go for Dante Valentine's Working for the Devil or P.C. Cast's Marked. Any preferences from you guys would rock.

And I didn't like Lunatic Cafe very much. I didn't like Anita through half the the book. I think part of it was that Laurell didn't have enough Jean Claude in the book for me. Jean Claude is my main reason for reading them. He rocks. Overall though I didn't like it much. I'm ready for a new series now!

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I just finished One Foot in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost, and loved it!! (It's the sequel to Halfway to the Grave.) A super fun and enjoyable read.

message 28: by Sayuri_x (new)

Sayuri_x Just finished 'The Darkest Kiss' from Gena SHowalter and really liked it. In the midle of slogging through Book 4 of Keri Arthur's Riley Jensen but I have to say Quinn is sucking all the fun out of the book for me.

I have the first Kresley Cole sitting waiting and the first Karen Chance along with Alyssa Day's first
Atlantis book. Also I have the first two of Illona Andrews new series and some Jayne Castle, Richelle Mead, Kim Harrison and Toni Andrews.

Which do you guys recommend first...or should I re-read my BDB's again until Phury's book is released?

message 29: by Inky (new)

Inky | 10 comments I just finished The Darkest Kiss:) and am moving on to Damien in J. Frank's Nightwalker series.

message 30: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) Ooh, is Damien out? I hadn't realised. I really enjoyed Elijah, it was much better than the previous two.

Cassandra, I got a little lost amongst the Cole books there - by book 1, you mean "The Warrior Wants Forever"? I'm just curious as to why you loathed it, cause I really enjoyed it. Hell, I love them all, they're my favourite PNR books!

message 31: by Pamela, Moderatrix (new)

I just picked up Embrace the Night by Karen Chance, too. I was reading an Amelia Peabody mystery, The Last Camel Died At Noon by Elizabeth Peters, but... I couldn't resist more Mircea. :D

message 32: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I love Kresley Cole! I have enjoyed all of her Immortals After Dark series, but book two was my favorite. I really loved Sebastian and Kaderin. And, how cool would it be to have a name like Kaderin the Cold Hearted?? I want to be known as Jennifer the something or other...

message 33: by Cassandra (last edited May 21, 2008 10:41AM) (new)

Cassandra | 49 comments Hey, Shannon.

---> Spoiler warning!!!
I give away some stuff about the Immortals After Dark series in this comment, so please don't read on to save the surprises for yourself!<---

Book 1 of the Immortals After Dark (IAD) series is "A Hunger Like No Other" as far as I can tell. I think book 4 ("Dark Needs at Night's Edge") was my favorite because the characters liked each other and were good to each other. Although book 2 was also awesome. After doing some digging, I see that "The Warlord Wants Forever" was a short story in an anthology. I haven't read that, but will need to soon!

"A Hunger Like No Other" is the one that I object to - specifically, the way the book rationalizes violence towards women. "He was tortured; he was sleeping; she's immortal and will heal; he didn't know she was inexperienced..." All culminating in Emma miraculously UNDERSTANDING him (due to a plot device, not character development) and forgiving him.

I'm very glad I did read her other books though, because Kresley's other female leads are independent, self-fulfilled, strong women (who therefore have some of the BEST dialogue ever) who take care of themselves and take their men to task over any crappy treatment. They start out with a strong core (with an Achille's heel that of course gets thumped throughout the book), and end up even stronger and more confident by the end. And her character development just keeps getting better and better.

When it comes to vicariously experiencing someone else's life through a novel, her later books seem a much more enjoyable ride.

Here endeth my soapbox.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Right Now I'm reading tall Dark and Hungry. I dont know why but I'm always reading books out of order in a series and then have to play catch up in the series

message 35: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I'm about to start "Staked" by J.F. Lewis (goodreads author!). I think it should be funny. Just finished From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris and then I'll be reading "Marked" by PC/Kristin Cast.

message 36: by Murrrmaiyd (new)

Murrrmaiyd | 25 comments I'm just finishing the second of Keri Arthur's Riley Jenson books and will go on to read the other three after, and then probably reread the BDB in prep for PHURY! Yay! ahem. :)

After I drag my brain back out of the BDB universe, I'll start in on the Katie MacAlisters that my mother gave me last week, most particularly the dragons, since I actually already have read the Dark Ones in ebook form. I'm glad to have them in regular paperback now though, I'm sure I'll reread them and I get tired of sitting at the 'puter reading ebooks.

message 37: by Shreela (new)

Shreela Thanks for mentioning Linnea Sinclair’s The Down Home Zombie Blues. I see plenty of vamp and were/shifter PNRs, but not too many zombies that I've found yet. Adding to TBR, thanks

message 38: by Shreela (new)

Shreela I'm almost halfway through Rebecca York's "Beyond Control". So far it's like a suspense thriller, with the social outcast protagonists trying to solve a series of covered up murders, using their job connections, as well as their psychic abilities, which until they met each other, they had never told anyone else about. And their psychic connection gets super-charged when they touch, mentally as well as physically.

So far they haven't allowed themselves to 'fully' touch yet, despite how super hot it makes them; even though it makes them hot, it's a bit overwhelming to them, plus their lives are in danger from investigating the murders, so they have to be careful.

The antagonists are creeping me out so far, but York actually makes me understand how they became the way they are, and sort of feel sorry for them. Other than the one thing creeping me out, how they conduct their 'business' with others is very intriguing.

message 39: by Morgan (new)

Morgan (mlhiggins84) I'm reading Tall, Dark, and Dead by Tate Hallaway. It's ... ok.

message 40: by Emily (new)

Emily | 4 comments I just finished reading "The Darkest Night" by Gena Showalker. It is a new series that she has out and the book was really interesting. How demons trapped in an immortal warrior's body come to be good and kind beings and eventually fall in love. But be warned to know your Greek mythology. There are a few references that you should know along the way.

message 41: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I've just started The Host by Stephenie Meyer, and I'm already hooked.

message 42: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 128 comments Well I sat on my butt Sunday and (asisde from a couple small breaks to eat and such) read "All Together Dead" in one sitting. I woke up and made some coffee and decided to start it while I enjoyed my coffee, but then was too hooked to put it down and had to read through. Now tonight I will be picking up Blood Noir : ) Last night I flipped through First Death (Graphic Novel story of Anita Blake and her first meeting with Jean Claude) to get me back into Anita's world : )

message 45: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I just started Dark Desires After Dusk, the newest by Kresley Cole. She is just cranking out work right now. Her last book was just published about a month ago, and I think she has another one due out early next year. Hooray for prolific writers!

Cassandra | 49 comments Ack!!! Thank you, Jennifer! I'll be hitting the bookstore ASAP!

message 48: by Ed (new)

Ed Rollins | 1 comments I'm reading (ok, forcing myself to finish) "Kitty and the Midnight Hour" while waiting for "The Outlaw Demon Wails" to come out in paperback. Can't say I'm super impressed by the book so far; it reminds me of everything that was ever wrong with on line WoD role playing...

message 49: by Christal (new)

Christal | 83 comments I'm rereading all the Sookie Stackhouse books as I wait for Amazon to send me the newest one. I've fallen a little behind in my series reading and am now waiting to receive the new Sookie, Personal Demon, Undead and Uneasy, the first Silver Dragons book by Katie McAlister, and Jeaniene Frost's follow-up One Foot in the Grave. I was so-so on the first book, so book two is kind-of make or break. I also have the second and third book in the Sign of the Zodaic series on the way. This series is in the same boat. If these two don't thrill me, I think I am done with it. Too many great books out there to waste time with the mediocre ones.

Does anyone read the Weather Warden series? I can't wait for book 7, Gale Force, to come out in August.

message 50: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 128 comments Ranata:

Here is the link to First Death on Borders' site:

And here is the goodreads link:

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17...

It is comic book style, but fun and no sex. It is early Anita who is still working with her "mentor necrmancer". She is working a case and meets Jean Claude for the first time as she is investigating one of his employees.
