Here is a section where you can ask questions about things you may not be able to do in terms of The History Book Club. You may have problems with fulfilling the guideline requirements because you cannot add a book cover, author's photo, author's link if your life depended on it.

Here is a place to get some help with all of those things which you may have been too embarrassed to ask about. Don't be.

Here is a place where a life jacket is being thrown your way. Grab it and take hold and before you know you will be swimming along with everyone else.

HOW DO I ADD A BOOK COVER, AUTHOR'S PHOTO AND AUTHOR'S LINK?

Here I will try to give you some very, very detailed directions which hopefully you will be able to follow. I am making them extremely detailed for someone who is new and just learning about this feature. However, once you know what you are doing this feature takes about 5 seconds tops.

Our guidelines specify that when you are citing any book that you must add three things if available; the book cover, the author's photo and the author's link.

Here are the directions:

1. You are in a group book discussion and you are in the middle of composing your post and you are typing away in the comment box and all of a sudden you think of this great book you would like to share with everyone else. You think you remember the title and you want to add it. The first thing you have to look for is the feature in goodreads called add book/author which is above the comment box a little of center to the right.

2. Put your cursor over the words add book/author and you will now see an underline show up under these words. Click these words and a pop up box will appear.

3. It will have two tabs at the top: one book (more than likely white) and the other author (more than likely shaded). There will be a white search box after the word Book: and after the box which you will fill in is a shaded box which contains the word search. Under the three are the words Search for a book to add a reference. At the bottom are two radio buttons, one which says link and the other says cover. The reason that the search box says book is because the tab that is in white at the top of the pop up box is selected (that is why it is in white). If author had been selected the word author would have been in white and then book would have had a shaded background.

4. Make sure to immediately click the radio button which is in front of the word cover.

5. Once you have done that type in the name/title of the book which you would like to cite. In this example, we are going to search for the book "My Early Life" which is by Winston S. Churchill.

6. We type in the box My Early Life and we place our cursor on the shaded box which says search and click on the word search.

7. A circular icon appears and goodreads starts searching and a new pop up box appears. This one looks a little different than you are used to. You still see the tabs at the top and if you are searching for a book; then the book tab will have a white background and the author tab will be shaded. You will see in the middle a listing of probable books which are similar to your request in some way. Some have variations of your title and some of the authors are different as well. You also see to the right of each selection, a shaded box which says add and underneath the word add are the words other editions. You will also see the word previous and then some page numbers in consecutive order and the word next. These are the different pages that you can scroll through one at a time if you do not see your book on the first page which 90% of the time you will. On the bottom you see the word add: and then a radio button in front of the word link and a radio button in front of the word cover. Make absolutely sure that you have selected the radio button in front of the word cover. Now you are ready to look at the books.

8. You look down the list and you find the cover and the title and the book you are looking for. In this case, it is the second choice down. You see that it has the correct cover (in fact there is one), the correct title and the correct author. It says My Early Life: 1874-1904 by Winston S. Churchill. If for some reason, you would like to check that this is the book, you could run your cursor over the title of the book and an underline will appear under the title and you can click on it and be taken to a page which will tell you more about your selection. Once you have confirmed that this is the right book (in case you were not sure), then close out that page and you should be taken back to your pop up window. If you were unsure of the author, you could do the same thing and you would have been taken to the goodreads page all about Winston S. Churchill, and to get back just close out the page backing out of it and you should be taken back to the same pop up window. In many cases, you are sure that this is the correct book, the first time you see it and do not have to do the above. You check once more at the bottom that the radio button before the word cover is checked, then you go back to selection of My Early Life which is the second choice down, look to the right of the book and you will see a shaded button which is rectangular and has the word add in it. You put your cursor over the word add which is directly to the right of your selection and you click that add.

9. You will be taken back to your original comment message box where you were typing your post to begin with; when you thought that you wanted to add a book. Now you will see something like this code which is dropped down below whatever you had typed in your box; it is always placed last by goodreads. I cannot place it here in its entirety because then the code would show a book cover instead of the code itself. But it will start with a left bracket and then you will see this (a bracket and then) bookcover:My Early Life: 1874-1904|90229]

10. But unfortunately you have added only the bookcover and you have to go back in. And you wonder how do I get the author's photo and author's link to show up as well. And you also now find yourself back in your original message box. Well, you have to click on the add book/author right away again, and you will get the same pop up window that you got in steps 7 and 8. Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ remembers the book and book cover that you last asked for. But this time you have to look at the two tabs at the top of the pop up box; and once again you see the choices of a book tab or an author tab. You can still see that the one that you had was not shaded and that was the book tab; now you simply select the author tab.

11. Now after you clicked on the author tab, you will see a change. Now the author tab has a white background and the book tab is shaded. That tells you that you are now in the author's section of add book/author feature.

12. You will then see a white search box at the top with the word author: in front of it and a shaded word search to the right of the box. This search box is available in case you do not find what you are looking for on this page. But first we will see if the author of My Early Life is indeed on this page as the goodreads software suspects.

13. You look down the list and you see that the second choice down shows a photo of Winston S. Churchill, the name of the author beside the photo of Winston S. Churchill and the shaded add button to the right of this selection. But you do not want to be too hasty yet in selecting the add as yet. You must look down to your radio buttons which are at the bottom. You will see two radio buttons at the bottom; the first radio button says link and the second radio button says photo. Since you saw that there was indeed a photo, you unclick the link radio button which may be automatically selected by the goodreads software and check the radio button in front the word photo. Now you are ready to make your selection so you go back up to the second author down which shows the photo of Winston S. Churchill, his name and has an add button to the right, and you place your cursor on that specific add button and click it. What will happen now is that some new code will be added directly after the book cover code. This will be your photo code; it will look something like this by itself - (I have to use words for the first bracket otherwise a photo would appear in this box) left bracket and then authorimage:Winston S. Churchill|14033]. You can tell you have the photo because you see the words authorimage. Now you still need the author's link which will provide now the name of the author himself. And you realize that once again that you are in your original message box again. So what do you do.

14. You once again click on add book/author and goodreads takes you back automatically to the pop up window where you were previously. Your choice is still the second choice down; but you must not be too hasty and select the add button to the right of the photo of Winston S. Churchill and his name yet.

You must look to the bottom of the pop up box and you will see those same two radio buttons; the first radio button is before the word link and the second radio button is before the word photo. Because you had just selected the photo it is probably still selected; you must deselect that radio button and now select the radio button before the word link. When you have selected link, you can now click on the add beside your author photo, name choice. Once you do this you see more code added directly after the other code I already showed you in your message box. For the author's link, it will look something like this: (left bracket) author:Winston S. Churchill|14033]

15. You know that you now have also the author's link which will be just the author's name because you simply see the word author: before the name of Winston S. Churchill.

16. The entire code for the book cover, author's photo and author's link will be altogether in your message box. It will look something like the following without the words left bracket; the left bracket itself will be showing [

17. You can move the code where you would like to paste it in your message box by simply doing a cut and paste (control c; control v); be careful not to cut off any of the brackets. Once you are satisfied that you have what you want and it looks right; then you can select your preview button which is to the right of the post button.

18. You select the preview button and you should see this:

Note: What we also do is manually add the word by after the ending bracket of the book cover and the beginning bracket of the author photo or author image - we place a space before the word by and one space after. You can see that I inserted it above at the end.

SIMPLE DIRECTIONS FOR ADDING BOOK COVER, AUTHOR'S PHOTO AND AUTHOR'S LINK:

For those of you who find the goodreads software intuitive; then these simple directions may suffice:

"For a book link, use the "add book/author" link that is just above the comment box. When you click on it, it brings up a box where you can search by either book title (ISBN’s work best here if possible) or author name. You'll get a list of search results and you can pick which one to add. At the bottom of the box are two radio buttons to select whether you want a text link or the cover shown. (For this group, we prefer the cover if available.) After getting the book link in, if you click on "add book/author" again, it should still show your search results. If you select the "author" tab, it will automatically show the authors that match those search results. Again, at the bottom select whether you want a text link or picture.

"When you are done, try the "(preview)" link under the comment box next to the "post" button. It will show you what your comment looks like and you can check your work.

It makes your posting look pretty good and allows others to check out the books and populates the thread with titles & authors mentioned so others can research either the book or the author

Note: What we also do is manually add the word by after the ending bracket of the book cover and the beginning bracket of the author photo or author image - we place a space before the word by and one space after. You can see that I inserted it above at the end.

FOR THOSE OF YOU LOOKING FOR FORMATTING TIPS:

If you look to the top right of your comment box, you will see above the box on the upper right hand side the following words (some html is ok). If you place your cursor on top of these words, an underline appears underneath them. Click on those words now and you will see some formatting tips from goodreads.

These will show you how to do the following:

a) How to add a web url

d) How to add a link to author

In the case of c and d; this will take someone to the goodreads pages.

e) How to add an image (in my estimation these directions need a lot of work)

f) How to add bold, italics, underline, strike text, indent text, blockquote, paragraph, and some information on the order of tags.

To add books you've read to a shelf, use the 'bookshelves' dropdown while editing a review. Videos may be added to any author profile as long as they are hosted on YouTube or BookVideos.tv first. To add a video, first make sure you have librarian status, then click on "edit" on any author profile (lower right corner of the info box). The "add videos" link is on the right side of that page.

To add a book to your shelves, find the book by searching for its title or author. On the book profile page click on 'add to my books'. All the fields on the next page are optional, so enter a rating or review if you like, then click 'save' and the book will be added to your books.

To remove a book from your shelf, click on the 'my books' link at the top of Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, make sure you are on the 'main' or 'list' view, then click 'remove' next to the book you'd like to remove. how to import or export your books

To import your books from a csv, txt, or xls file, click on my books then on import. Then follow the instructions on the right side of the page. The batch upload may take several minutes to process, depending on how large your file is. You can also export your books to excel from the same page.


how to sort your books

You can sort your or your friends reading lists by any criteria you like, using the links at the top of the column while viewing a shelf. For example, to sort by title, click on 'title', which appears at the top of the page. Clicking again will reverse the sort. Other columns that can be sorted on are: author name, rating, my rating, shelves, date added, publication date, date added, date read, average rating, review, number of comments, and number of reviews. Make sure to check out the various views (main, list, reviews, covers, print, edit, rss) to see all the sorting options.

If you are logged in right now, this link may work. Note that Visual Bookshelf's faq says that the export feature "is only available to LivingSocial.com site users and those who have linked their social network account to LivingSocial.com".

After you have the csv export, you can import it to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ.
can I vote "no" on someone's review?
Currently you can only vote positively for user reviews, but you can "unvote" at any time by simply clicking "vote" a second time (it toggles on and off). Also, you can write a comment instead of voting, which allows you to state your more specific opinion of the review.

reviewing more than one edition

While most of the time you will only wish to shelve a single edition, you can rate and/or review as many editions of a book as you want. Rate and review the first edition as you would any book. Then click on the "other editions" box on the right.

On the "other editions" list, find the second edition that you wish to rate or review. Go to the second edition's page, and select "review this edition". You will then be able to enter a separate review for the second edition. If you wish to review a third (or more) edition, simply repeat the process.

How to enable Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ updates on your mini-feed on Facebook

To enable Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ reviews to appear in your newsfeed on Facebook, first make sure you have the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Books app installed. Then go to your settings page on the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ App to grant permission to update your feed.

Once this is done your Profile box on Facebook should stay up to date, and any books you add on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ will appear in your profile feed on Facebook. Note that due to Facebook rules automatic Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ application updates will not make it onto your friends Facebook pages. You can get around this by clicking the "add to my Facebook Wall" link after adding your review on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. You can also click on "my books" in the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Books app and then "publish" at any time. You can disable updates on Facebook by going to applications (footer menu) => edit applications => edit settings for Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ => Additional Permissions tab => uncheck the "publish to streams" checkbox.

how to import my books from other cataloging services

You can easily import your books from LibraryThing, Delicious Monster, Shelfari, and many other book cataloging sites. First you will need to export your books to a CSV or spreadsheet. On LibraryThing go to 'tools' => 'export tab delimited file' and save the file to your hard drive. On Shelfari go to 'account settings' then click on 'Download a list of your books'. Then go to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and go to 'my books' => import and import the file. Your books, along with any reviews, ratings, and tags (we call them shelves) will be imported.

how do I remove a book from my books?

How to use a CueCat to scan and import your books

Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ supports importing ISBN13 numbers, which is what the CueCat outputs. There are two simple ways to use Cuecat:

1. Place the cursor in the search box on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, and scan away. After scanning click to add the book to your shelves, then put the cursor in the search box and scan again!
2. Open a simple text editing program like TextEdit, plug in your CueCat, and scan away. You should see 13 digit numbers appear as you scan, one per line. Make sure the first line is "isbn". Then save the file as a .csv file, and import it. Easy!

If your profile is private can other users still see your activity using RSS?

If your profile is private your RSS feed is also private. Private profiles use a secure key to restrict access to their RSS feeds. If you click on your RSS link while signed in you will find it contains a secure "key" parameter that will allow RSS readers to access your feed. You should take care not to share this secure link with anyone you do not wish to have access to your feed.

How to import your books from Weread

If you would like to import your collection from Weread (aka Books iRead), you are out of luck - please contact them and request they add an export feature. You may also try to grab your profile url from weread.com and try importing it using our url import option (make sure to do each page separately).

does Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ allow items other than books?

Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ is primarily for Books, however the 'add a book form' allow members to add any items they have read. Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ encourages people to restrict items added to books and journals, and to avoid adding non-book items such as short stories, magazines, games, posters, calendars, etc. Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ receives much of its data from sources like Amazon, and while we try our best to restrict this information to books, we cannot monitor everything. If you notice items on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ that do not belong, please remove it, If you are not a librarian, you may contact a librarian in the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Librarians group.

can Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ be used as a teaching tool for students?

Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ can be used by educators to help a class of students monitor each others reading habits and discuss books together. We recommend creating a private group for the group interested (classroom, school, etc). I noticed an odd or inaccurate avg rating or other data

Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ often caches data, and sometimes it gets out of sync. Cached items include average ratings for books, the number of books in "my books", the number of friends in your friends list, the number of books an author has and other items. We correct all cached items each night, but even so sometimes observant people notice the discrepancies. We are working to fix all the issues, but until we do just be assured things will be corrected each night.

These are the three parts you should have in any book citation. Sometimes the author's photo is not available.

Marissa, you got the book cover down. You need to also add the author photo (when available) and the author link. Those can be found on the author tab when you are in the add book/author feature. Your book citation should look like this:

Once you locate the book, use the radio button at the bottom to select book cover, as you did in your practice sample. To get the author, immediately go back into the add book/author feature and click on the author tab at the top. It should display the appropriate author among the selections listed there. Using the same radio buttons at the bottom, add the photo (if there is one), and then go back in and add the link, or just add the link if there is no author photo. You'll get the hang of it. Once you do it will be easy.

Bentley et al: Thanks for being so succinct regarding the posting of books/authors. I have noticed in other groups of which I am a member that this practice is gaining popularity. It brings attention to the book and the author better than a simple link. It took me a couple of tries to master it but the process is well worth it.
