Sharon Raphael I laughed out loud at this very very funny book but also cried inside. Augusten Burroughs had a fresh new way of writing very personal stories. I think this was an autobiographical story taking some license by writing the story in somewhat novel form. Am I right about this? I read this some time ago. Waited a long time for a next book by Burroughs to be as good. Enjoyed his short stories about Burrough's memories of Christmas. That was a good book too. I didn't find Dry and some of the other books as intense or as close to the bone as Scissors. But now I think Burroughs has found his muse again.

Finally someone who agrees with me. Thanks Sharon.

I don't understand why the ratings for this book are so low on this website! Augusten Burroughs is the most hilarious writer ever and he is my favorite author, so I just don't understand. I'm just glad to see that someone else agrees with me.

Heather Anderson I love this book and A Wolf At The Table, as well. Running With Scissors is awesome; he manages to take some tragic situations and make them funny. I am so glad he wrote this book. When I finished it I think I said out loud, "And I thought my parents were bad.." People who give this book negative reviews have no appreciation for the darker side of life. I read (in one of the negative reviews) where someone spoils something that happens in the book because he was so upset reading about it. Well something quite similar happened to me when I was fifteen. So if you've led a reltively sheltered, happy suburban life, you just may not appreciate this book. I was overjoyed and felt privileged to get to read Augusten's story.

Sharon Raphael Oh, right, Wolf at The Table, read it some time ago. Very dark portrayal of Burroughs relationship or non relationship, so to speak, with his Father.
I found it somehow just too dark colored glasses for my taste.

Nathan Daniels I have mixed feelings about this book. I certainly enjoyed Augusten Burroughs writing style --he is funny, and a natural story-teller.
At the same time, I did feel some real disappointment when I finished this one. The description on the back of the book is what caught my interest, implying some seriously intense events and situations. When I got to these parts in the book, however... they just fizzled out, and were really nothing at all.
I definitely felt mislead by the description.
I did enjoy reading it, because it was a well-told story. Unfortunately, the story was only half as interesting as I thought it was going to be.

James Augusten Burroughs is also my favorite active comedy/non-fiction author. Running With Scissors made me laugh at the most inappropriate subjects, and I love every moment.

I love everything I've read by him, and regarding his books, I've only not read "This is How". But even "Wolf At The Table", though very different, was a rewarding read for me because I wanted to know more about that part of the author's life.

If you've not checked out "Magical Thinking", please do. "Rat Thing" had me and my wife laughing so hard we had tears streaming down our faces.

I agree with you. The premise is rich with potential, but the book itself felt half written to me. Yes, the series of events did make me laugh in places, but much of it was just not funny IMO and screamed out for some context.

Diane Great read! It was a surprise gift from my spouse and I was thankful he picked it up on a whim. It is a quick read with some parts that run a little dry but overall, well told.
