Heidi | 2446 comments This is stretching it, but I already had this at home to read, so my May book is Trouble in Mudbug. It is about a mother in law, but she is still a mother (right?)

message 57: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (dolphinlover) | 290 comments you're not stretching it in my opinion. Every mother counts even in-laws

Shannon (dolphinlover) | 290 comments I have just finished Dipped, Stripped, and Dead (A Daring Finds Mystery, #1) by Elise Hyatt
This was a very good read for me. I was glad to see a mother that seems really real. I loved the main character Dyce for her flaws including her mistakes in her parenting. Something I can relate to. I also love the best friend Ben. He reminds me of one of my best friends whom I miss dearly. Good tips at the end of this book for furniture refinishing.

Well, I put the books I've chosen at this moment:

* For May Flowers: Pretty Poison (Peggy Lee Garden Series #1) by Joyce Lavene

* For Horses: Death by Dressage (She Rides, He Doesn't Mystery, #1) by Carolyn Banks

* For Mother's day: Dipped, Stripped, and Dead (A Daring Finds Mystery, #1) by Elise Hyatt

Perhaps another one, but I'm not sure.

Finished Mum's the Word last night and am looking forward to reading more books in this series before end of the month. I also read Second Wind last week for my horse book. This was my first Dick Francis and I will definitely be reading more by him.

message 65: by Susan (last edited May 07, 2010 03:31PM) (new)

Susan (sumagoo) | 131 comments I have finished all my May theme reads so here it goes:

~For Mothers as dectives: Magnolia, Moonlight, and
Murder by Sara Rosett

~ For Flowers: Mum's The Word by Kate Collins

~For Horses: Death On The Diagonal by Carolyn Banks

First time I have read any of these authors. I really enjoyed Kate Collins and Carolyn Banks and will read more from them. I enjoyed the book by Sara Rosett but just not enough to keep them up.

Has been a long time since I picked up a Dick Francis book. I enjoyed every one I read.

message 68: by Tammy (new)

Tammy I'm new to the theme reading but I'm very excited to give this a try and I chosen the following to read ......

- For horses: "Lead A Horse to Murder" by Cynthia Baxter.
- For Mother's Day: "Mother's Day Murder" by Leslie Meier.
- For May flowers: "Wiped Out" by Barbara Colley.

Happy Reading Everyone!

I've finished Dipped, Stripped, and Dead for Mother's Day and I haven't liked it a lot, I think I'll not continue with the series.

THE SADDLEMAKER'S WIFE is a really good read. I read 4 years ago when it came out. I like about anything that Earlene Fowler writes.

I've finished Pretty Poison and I've liked it very much. I've ordered the next one through Amazon (sadly, no e-book).

At least start with the first one as that sets up the main relationship in the series. I'm not a real anal read-in-order type, but I did read this series that way and it probably made it more enjoyable.

message 73: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Wow! This is hard for me. I've already read all the Kate Collins flower shop mysteries, all the Janis Harrison Bretta Solomon (florist)mysteries, all the Michele Scott horse lovers mysteries, all the Dick Francis horse mysteries, all the Cynthia Baxter mysteries, all of Rita Mae Brown's Sister Jane Arnold (foxhunting/horses) mysteries, all the Lee Harris mysteries about an ex-nun who is a mother, all the Leslie Meier mysteries all the Heather Webber Nina Quinn mysteries ... Help! Tell me something new in one of those categories!

message 74: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments I've also read all the Peggy Lee gardening mysteries by Joyce & Jim Lavene, all the (mom zone) Sara Rosett mysteries, all the Ministry is Murder (mom) mysteries, all the Valerie Wolzien (mom) mysteries. I feel like the hungry plant yelling "Feed me!" LOL

I am anal about reading series in order and I think you will get much more out of Earlene's books if read that way. The relationships grow throughout the series and I think you need to read more than just the first one to get that. All of the books in this series are excellent.

Katherine Hall Page's Faith Fairchild series is about a minister's wife/caterer who is a mother. This is a good series.

Although I haven't read the series by
Ann Ripley (re: Louise Eldridge) I have written down that gardening is part of it and the titles in general deal with plants/gardening (see: Death of a Garden Pest, The Garden Tour Affair: A Gardening Mystery, Death in the Orchid Garden)

Again, I have not read this series but it sounds good, the Susan Henshaw mysteries by Valerie Wolzien (she is a mother)

I had to turn to one of my favorite sites () to find more for you (and there are many more than I am going to list--go to the website and click on Cozies by Themes):

for horses try:

Carolyn Banks's She Rides, He Doesn't Mystery Series

Laura Crum's Gail McCarthy mystery series with a equine Vet

For flowers:

Joan Hadley's Theo Bloomer mystery series (florist)

Julie Wray Herman's Three Dirty Women Landscaping, Inc mysteries (this sounds good, must add to my list!)

Vicki Lane's Elizabeth Goodweather mystery series (owns a flower/herb farm) (love the character's last name)

Anthony Eglin's English Garden Mysteries (professor of botany)

Mary Freeman's Rachel O'Connor, Landscaper series

message 77: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Thanks, Denise! For the info and the web site. I'll have to check it out. (I've read all the Ann Ripley books and Vicki Lane and Anthony Eglins too! As well as the Valerie Wolzien Susan Henshaw series). I would recommend any or all of those series, especially Vicki Lane! : )

Kari - I try to read mystery series in order BUT the Earlene Fowler you suggested as a horse read is a non-series book. Her Benni Harper mysteries are in my tbr pile. I'm starting with The Saddlemaker's Wife as my horse read for May.
Thanks for the idea.

Sure will - I'm hoping to start it tonight.

message 80: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 188 comments I'm so impressed with everyone who has read all three and already finished! I'm just starting my first one tonight. :)

message 81: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2446 comments Suzanne - I have only been reading one book for each month too.

message 82: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 188 comments There's just "so many books and so little time!!" :)

message 83: by Susan (new)

Susan I so agree with you Suzanne!!!

message 84: by Tammy (new)

Tammy I agree, Suzanne; so many books and so little time.

I am trying to reach my goal to read all three of the May theme books by the end of the month, but I don't think I'll make it. I've read "Wiped Out" by Barbara Colley and I am currently reading "Lead A Horse to Murder" by Cynthia Baxter. I got a last start and I've been extra busy with work, gardening, family, etc. So, I still have 1 1/2 books to go ..... I'm trying though.

Happy Reading Everyone!

message 85: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 188 comments Go Tammy Go! I bet you'll make it. :)

Well, I've finished Death by Dressage. Too much horses for me, I haven't liked it a lot, I think I'm done with the series.

message 88: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 188 comments Just finished Pushing Up Daisies. I loved the mystery plots - very intriguing and kept me wondering until the end! I'm not sure about the protagonist though. Not that I disliked Paula Holliday; more like I didn't get a good feel for who she was. I'll try the next book in the series at some point.

If nothing else, I finished the yellow ray in my Spring Challenge rainbow. :)

message 89: by Trine (new)

Trine (trinespageongoodreads) | 200 comments Finished reading The Raven and the Nightingale (Karen Pelletier Mystery, #3) by Joanne Dobson - another great Karen Pelletier read.

Also finished reading another May-theme related book, namely Mum's the Word (A Flower Shop Mystery, #1) by Kate Collins and found this to be a much better read than Pretty Poison (A Peggy Lee Garden Mystery, #1) by Joyce Lavene .

message 90: by Valorie (new)

Valorie | 550 comments I forgot to post that I finished Saddled with Trouble (Horse Lover's Mystery, Book 1) by Michele Scott by Michele Scott for the horse theme. I really enjoyed it. I don't think I'm going to be able to get to the third book this month, but at least I got two read!

message 91: by Linda (new)

Linda B | 200 comments I started Ghost of a Chance on the 19th of May. I went on a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands and thought I could finish it but I did not get it done til 6/1. It was good. Oh by the way I had a wonderful time in the Islands.
