Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments Thought I would create a spot where we can post fun, interesting and even annoying things around GoodReads. We all spend a ton of time out here, but I know I haven't even begun to find/use all the little goodies GoodReads has to offer.

Have you found anything new? A cool new way to sort your shelves? A new feature? Do Share! :)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Shelving features galore here but it's still in beta so there may be a few bugs:

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments Cool, thanks Ames!

I removed my dups. Gotta check it out more later.

Brandi ;) (clairadncr) | 14 comments I absolutely LOVE this site. GR is my facebook. I love it better and spend more time on it, mainly cause none of my FB friends understand my book addiction. I piddle on here constantly, just recently found the Giveaways section and went to town. Who doesn't love winning something, especially a book!
Anyway, despite all my wandering, there are some things I still can't figure out so I've got a ?. Maybe it's already posted somewhere else on some other topic and if it is please pre-accept my apology for asking and just point me in the right direction and i will bother no more. If it is not listed elsewhere then I will be very, very grateful for the help.
Here goes: When making lists of books in the challenges you decide to join, how on earth do you make the line go thru the title after you've read it to mark it off? If that is to much to explain, then how do you put the pics of the books on the list? I'm not computer illiterate but I'm not by any means a computer whiz. I just thought it would be cool to be able to show the books pics or to be able to strike thru the title of a book when marking them off on my challenges.
Thanks again for any help and BTW, this group is FABULOUS! :)

Sandra | 25884 comments Brandi, it's easy once you know how.

Ok, first up above the comment box it says add book/author - click on that and it brings up a box for you to type in the name of the book you want, it then gives you the option of link or cover, clicking cover will give you the picture of the book.

Also above the comment box is (some html is ok). Click on that and it gives a list of things you can do, like underlining, striking through and linking one part of the site to another.

You need to use <* s*> and before and after whatever you want the line to go through, and obviously you don't use the stars (I've used them so they'll show up and not just strike out 'and').

Hope this helps, if not just post back. And thanks for the kind words.

message 7: by new_user (new)

new_user Hey, Brandi! Re: strikeouts, just enter *s*STRIKE THROUGH THESE WORDS*/s* Replace the stars with forward and backward arrows.

For pics, click "add book/author" above the comment box, search for your book and select "cover" at the bottom before you "add" the book you want from the search results.

Hope that helps! :)

message 8: by Brandi ;) (new)

Brandi ;) (clairadncr) | 14 comments WOOHOO!!! It worked! Thanks sooooo much y'all! I feel just a little more computer savvy ;) I never knew what that (some html is ok) was. I also thought if i hit add book/author that i was adding a new author not on goodreads. I've messed up some computers before so I'm scared poopless to play around with the unknown. Thanks again!! :)

message 9: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments I had to laugh when I saw this page [ GoodReads Series ] because, seriously, are you going to scroll though all of those pages for a series to check out?

Now, on the flip side, YAY! and Thank you! to GR staff, librarians and all others who have added the series link to all/most books! LOVE it!

message 10: by Deborah (new)

Deborah I use it, not to find books to read, but to find series to correct, because I am a goodreads librarian.

message 11: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments Makes sense. Thanks for all you and the other librarians do for us. :)

message 12: by Deborah (new)

Deborah You're welcome.
If you find any problems with a series or a book that should be in a series, please report it in the Librarians group.
Series are great, but there is still a lot of clean-up work to be done.

message 13: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments Will do. :)

message 14: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments Or tell me Steph and I'll sneak over and fix it. LOL.

message 15: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments :) Ok. So nice havin' librarians on hand. LOL!

message 16: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments Another new trick just released:-

You can now compare shelves with other members, not just a random selection of books decided by the computer.

Select a victim GR member, hit Compare Books, usual screen comes up BUT to the right you have:
Common Shelves
Your Shelves
Their Shelves

You can compare shelves named the same OR
Shelves named differently such as vampire / vampires
or any combo such as paranormal / pnr - uf etc

Very cool!

message 17: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments Cool! I just compared a bit of ours. :) That's much better than the "old" way, more helpful too, I think.

message 18: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Thanks Sandra. I like it better than the old way too. I can compare the "read" shelf now, yay!

Another interesting bit of info about this, is that it was suggested by one person in the Feedback group on Sept 29th and implemented on Oct 12th. So if you have any ideas for the site, definitely post them there.

message 21: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Oct 18, 2010 08:51PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments I noticed that GR is now including (not on all yet) add'l detail about a book ...

Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent

characters: Marc Ramos, Faythe Sanders
setting: Texas (United States)

Copy cats! Nah, J/K! That's awesome! And, extremely helpful because not only is the info there, but they have linked that info to lists. So, click on "Texas" and you get a list of "books set in Texas".

Which brings me to my next tasty treat ... There's now a link for "places", yep! books set in different places! GREAT resource for challenges!

GoodReads' "PLACES" List
(IMO, that list would 1,000x better if we could search ... wish list idea!)

The same can be done with the character list. :)

message 22: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments Yay, that's one of the suggestions I made last week on the Librarian thread - there's going to be a lot of work done soon re searching different areas of the site.

Didn't realise it had been done. Yay!

(re the detail on books re characters & settings - they are only there if a Librarian has put them there, and that's been happening for a long time, but you couldn't search them till now)

message 23: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments :D Thanks for the suggestion, I'm glad they have begun implementing it. That'll be a major help! I've added a thread to their suggestion&questions asking if they'll make them searchable. Right now, it's just a long (albeit alphabetized) list of places. But, I'm not complaining.

message 24: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Feedback group has just announced that the new "my books" is almost done. YAY! Take a gander! My, but she is pretty. :)

Click on "Shelf Settings" and look at all the choices we'll now have.

message 25: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments I've already sorted some of my shelves into series order. Yay!!

I meant to come by & let everyone know, sorry, got sidetracked reading. Who would've thought that. LOL.

Seriously, you'll be able to do lots of cool stuff with your shelves. Play around and have a go!!

message 26: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments Reading? You? Nah. ;)

message 27: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ just added a "2011 Reading Challenge" where members can input their # reading goal for the year. Once you do, a countdown ticker will appear on your home page. Very cool! It'll also show your books by cover credited toward your goal.

In addition to all that, you can also see what goal your friends have set and see their status ticker, make comments, etc.

** They are currently working on fixing a bug - books read on the first of the month do not show up

message 28: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Yeah, I saw that today and thought it was pretty neat.

message 29: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Cool thanks!

message 30: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Ugh, it made me set a goal. The temptation of a new feature got me. I swore I wouldn't set a goal this year. My backbone is made of jelly. I'm so weak, it's pathetic. *groans*

message 31: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments ROFL!

message 32: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32583 comments LOL! I was thinking the same. I didn't renew my goal list over at 144 or now "Cover to Cover" group thinkin' I'd just wing it this year and see what happens. But, noooooo. Well, I aimed lower than my 2010 count, just so I could have a pretty countdown thicker. :D

message 33: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I'm considering lowering mine. I might've been a bit too ambitious with my figure. (I want an easier goal, is that lazy?)

message 34: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments If you want to see who won what in the 2010 Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Choice Awards - the answers are now up.

Go to your home page and click on See the Winners, just under your profile info, on the right hand side - you can see all the runners up also and how many votes each book received.

You may find more books to add to your tbr stash!

No, not lazy. Don't want that little ticker to become a blinking billboard everytime you jump on GR screaming "Look how little you've read! Get offline and get'ta reading!" LOL! :D

Thanks, Sandra. Off to check. I forgot to vote for more before it ended. I think I only voted for one book in one category. Oh well.

message 36: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I was actually thinking I should have a max goal, like if you've read this many books, stop, cuz you need to go out and get a life, lol.

message 37: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments Bite you tongue Vivian, there is no such thing as too many books!!

But sure you need to have a life, otherwise how could you afford all the books. LOL.

message 38: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Hahaha. I know, never too many books. And I know, there are worse addictions out there, but I can get a *little* obsessive about stuff, and forget things like eating, sleeping, those basics...

message 39: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

message 43: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I haven't bothered with the add'l book info, but I'm weird about giving 'optional' info, it makes me feel like they're collecting data on me/spying even though I'm already giving my opinion on the book, lol.

message 44: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Thanks for the explanation, Steph. But why would I need recommendations from GR when I have this group and my wonderful GR friends to rec books to me? LOL

message 45: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I know, like we need even more books to add to Mt. TBR!
