Hi all, sorry for the delay in getting this nomination thread up for ya! Better late than never, right? ;)

Here's how nominating works, for those new to the group:
-Please nominate one or two HF books that you would like to read with the group.
-Please use the "Add book/author" link to link to the book page so that anyone not familiar with the book can take themselves a peek to see if they might want to read it.
-Please provide a brief explanation of why you want to read the book with the group. No Master's thesis required! Something like "I'm fascinated by Ancient Greece" or "I want to read more about WWII" is perfectly fine. :)

Nominations will be taken until Wednesday July 28th, and then we'll vote!

Also, please make sure to check the group bookshelves to make sure that we have not read the book before - this can be found in the menu at the top right of most group pages. ONLY the books that we've read as a group appear here, so if the book is there, we've already read it!

Thanks!

My nomination will be a book that I recently received from the publisher for review, The Turtle Catcher by Nicole Helget. This is set around WWI, and is a kind of tragic human story, I believe. It sounds really interesting, and it's out in paperback now, so it should be easy to find! :)

message 3: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (harshmallow) | 394 comments As per usual, I'll nominate one I've read and one I want to read.

The Eagle and the Raven by Pauline Gedge I just read it last month and think it would spark a lot of discussion here. Plus, not much fiction is written about the Roman settlement and invasion of Albion.

The Piano Teacher by Janice Y.K. Lee I'm interested in the Chinese Civil War, its interruption when the Japanese invaded, and then its continuation after WWII. I have heard good things about this book.

message 4: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'd like to nominate 2 books:

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy The True Story of Hansel and Gretel. I'd like to read this one because it is on my summer challenge list so I could read this for the group read and get credit towards my challenge ;)

Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn Mistress of Rome. I'd like to read this one because I've read lots of great discussions in this group about this book :)

message 5: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) | 85 comments I'd like to nominate The Alienist by Caleb Carr. It's been on my TBR list forever and I've heard nothing but great things about it. Besides, who doesn't love a gripping historical thriller?

message 6: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments I am going to nominate one that has been on my TBRs for some time and I definitely plan to read in August as my local club has chosen it as their selection - Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.

message 7: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 121 comments I would love to read Black Ships by Jo Graham because it's about Ancient Greece! Who doesn't love that time? Also, I will nominate Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn! It has had such positive feedback and I really want to read it:)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3105 comments Linda, I read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan amd I loved it.

message 9: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) | 108 comments I nominate:

The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber Because of all the good reviews I've read about it.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijiebecause I love reading about Asia and the people there.

message 10: by Terri (last edited Jul 24, 2010 10:03PM) (new)

Terri I'd like to nominate two books.

Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae by Steven Pressfield

The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell

I nominate them because they seem so different to everything else mentioned and to what has been read before.
A best seller about the 300 Spartans that fought at Thermopylae, and England under Alfred the Great during a time of Viking invasion of the Britons/Saxons.

Also, I suspect that The Last Kingdom is on a lot of people's TBR lists.

message 11: by Moon (new)

Moon | -56 comments I would like to nominate Pride of Carthage because I would like to read about Hannibal's campaign. I wanted to finish it this summer because it's been sitting neglected on my bookshelf for far too long.

message 12: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 206 comments I would like to nominate Watermark: A Novel of the Middle Agesby Vanitha Sankaran. It's about a mute papermaker in a medieval French village. That's a really unusual perspective and I've got it on my TBR.

message 14: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihetzel-evans) | 48 comments I'd like to nominate a book that fits both the historical fiction and mystery genre (my fave combo)...
The Daughter of Time.

message 15: by Felina (new)

Felina I want to nominate The Color Purple by Alice Walker because I just got it for $4.00 on audible and thats a heck of a deal.

message 16: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 25, 2010 11:34AM) (new)

I am going to nominate Drood by Dan Simmons because I'm in the mood for something creepy and dark.

Hey Moony, I wanted to nominate Hannibal: Pride of Carthage too, but opted for Gates of Fire and The Last Kingdom instead. :-) But I was close to nominating it instead of Gates of Fire.

Tasha, Great minds think alike. Luckily I got a nom for The Last Kingdom in there for us both!

Tasha Terri wrote: "Moony wrote: "I would like to nominate Pride of Carthage because I would like to read about Hannibal's campaign. I wanted to finish it this summer because it's been sitting neglected ..."

Terri, thanks :) If The Last Kingdom wins, I'll be reading it sooner than I thought :)

Michelle, Drood sounds very, very interesting!!

Terri, would you like to read Pride of Carthage together sometime?

message 21: by Terri (last edited Jul 25, 2010 11:05PM) (new)

Terri Moony wrote: "Terri, would you like to read Pride of Carthage together sometime?"

I'm definitely up for that, Moony, if it doesn't get selected for the group read.
It is either my next read or the read after that. I am barely half way through a book right now (been trying to find time to read this week and now I have found it)..and then I planned on reading either Hannibal; Pride of Carthage or Gates of Fire.

How far off before you were thinking of picking it up?

message 22: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 121 comments Do we ever have more than one book to read for the month? People are nominating so many great books! I want to read them all...

Danielle wrote: "Do we ever have more than one book to read for the month? People are nominating so many great books! I want to read them all..."

We have only read more than one per month once - which was when we read an off-genre book with a HF book... I didn't want to daunt anyone with feeling that they'd have to read two potentially massive HF books in a single month... Hmmm...

Last day for nominations! I'll be putting up the poll tomorrow afternoon!

message 26: by Candace (new)

Candace | 24 comments I nominate True Women by Janice Woods Windle. I was given this book as my family history has been traced there. Excerpt from Amazon - Tracing four generations of Windle's relatives, this compelling novel is drawn from family stories, diaries, letters, historical accounts, and interviews. It not only reveals glimpses of Texas history from the early 1800s on, but also describes the women who aided in the territory's quest for independence.

message 32: by Felina (new)

Felina Yay. Secret polls hurt my feelings.

Terri Maude wrote: "Becky, I am an idiot - I forgot what I need to do and where to vote! I can find the poll and that's it!"

Did you find it, Maude?
Scroll to the bottom of the Aug/Sept list and look for the words 'vote in this poll', or something of that ilk. I think my wording is not correct. But anyway, you click on those words. Bottom left hand corner at bottom of list.

I wanted to vote for 3 of the books. Pride of Carthage, Gates of Fire and The Last Kingdom.

I ended up voting for The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell because, although I have read it and it is one of my favourite books, I really think that many people will enjoy this book.

http://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/22... this should take you there, and then just click on the book you want to read. :)

message 39: by Terri (new)

Terri I know the poll hasn't closed yet, but it looks like yours is going to be the winner, Kate. :-)

Kate, although I voted for a different book (I have to complete my summer challenge after all) I secretly hope yours wins so I have an excuse to read it sooner than later ;)

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 18 comments Hi Jackie..I did vote before it closed! got there in time...but your only allowed to vote for 1 book right?

message 46: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Yes, only allowed one vote. But if you find a book you really want to discuss you are more than welcome to open up a thread for it to generate interest or convo.

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 18 comments OK sounds good thanks Jackie!

message 48: by Julie (new)

Julie (readerjules) I think that everyone who voted for a book that won't win should change their vote to Hansel and Gretel hehe. :-)
(Why is the book I want always seem to be second?)

Julie, I voted for Hansel and Gretel too so I support your suggestion ;) Although, since this book is on my summer challege, I plan on reading it anyway!

message 50: by Hannah (last edited Jul 30, 2010 06:57AM) (new)

Hannah (harshmallow) | 394 comments Mistress of Rome is also a very good, very engaging book. I'm on the fence about whether or not I want to read Hansel and Gretel. I tend to avoid fiction about the Holocaust because my grandparents were survivors and I never think that a fictional account of it would do it justice, I guess. However, I liked the The Complete Maus graphic novels (which are more 'fictionalized tellings' of a true story), so I should probably give Hansel and Gretel a try.
