Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments I just realized that we haven't started a thread for this yet.

On the first day of the month, I finished my first reading experience with L.E. Modesitt Jr., that being The Magic of Recluce. My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Now I'm just about to finish "The Library Policeman", which is the third novella in Stephen King's Four Past Midnight. It's a re-read, but it's very fresh as it's been a long time.

I also just started The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell, the first in his series about Arthur. I've heard great things about Cornwell.

Cornwell's Sharpe series is a great favorite in this house. Don and I both enjoy it. He's a Stephen King enthusiast, also.

message 6: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (kev_reado) Just finished The Waste Lands (Dark Tower #3) yesterday and have started American Gods. The remainder of the months should include The Painted Man (Brett) and Wizard and Glass (Dark Tower #4).

message 7: by K.C. (new)

K.C. May Just started The Warrior's Apprentice and after that, I plan to read Old Man's War. I downloaded the sample on my Kindle and it looks really good.

message 8: by Jason (last edited Aug 07, 2010 05:18PM) (new)

Jason (darkfiction) I sort of went crazy this August with fantasy reading so far. Right now I'm reading Shadow's Son by Jon Sprunk, The Dragonbone Chair, and rereading The Name of the Wind.

message 9: by Jon (last edited Aug 08, 2010 06:38AM) (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments I finished The Gaslight Dogs Friday afternoon and am still mulling it over. To lighten my mood for the weekend, I picked up another Victorian era (actually Late Victorian/Edwardian Era or WWI to be precise) novel, The Beekeeper's Apprentice. I've been remiss in not keeping up with the re-read on The Curse of the Mistwraith though.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah ∞ (stargalgirl) I'm almost done reading 'Wicked Lovely'
It's a great book, and I've heard it's an amazing series.
It may sound VERY cheesy, but it's really good.

message 11: by Mondspucke (last edited Aug 11, 2010 01:14AM) (new)

Mondspucke Just started Mistborn: The Final Empire. If it's good, I'll just continue with The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages. Then there's still that copy of American Gods on my nightstand. And The Princess Bride (re-read) and Song of the Beast should be in the mail today. Oh, and I still haven't finished The Book of Jhereg. Well, that's the plan, but since I'm me, I'll have forgotten all about it by tomorrow and read something else.

Is it knock-out-excellent? The kind of book that you can't put away? (I don't care about sleep deprivation...)

message 14: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments I finished The Beekeeper's Apprentice (my review) on the commute home last night. I started The Mystery of Grace last night, but fell asleep after the second page (my fault, not de Lint's). I'm very remiss in re-reading Curse of the Mistwraith this week thanks to three days of training (and no lunch) at work.

message 15: by Arthur (new)

Arthur (astra) Finished The Host by Stephenie Meyer
Nothing special, although an improvement on Twilight series.
After 5 extremely light books, I have decided to read some classics.
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle

message 16: by Tonya (new)

Tonya (tonyanc) | 8 comments So far this month I've read, Total Eclipse, Dragon Bonesand am in the process of reading Dragon Blood

message 17: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Arthur, I hope that you LOVE Last Unicorn - one of my faves!

message 18: by Arthur (new)

Arthur (astra) Laurel wrote: "Arthur, I hope that you LOVE Last Unicorn - one of my faves!"
It is an odd book.
I have to read it slowly, so I don't miss anything.
At the moment it feels like a mixture of A Night in the Lonesome October, Book of the New Sun (1&2) and Lord of Light.
It is illogical. You cannot believe the narrators. They either lie or speak in riddles.
We will see...

message 19: by Sensitivemuse (new)

Sensitivemuse | 10 comments I just finished Phytosphere by Scott Mackay. Pretty good stuff. Not sure what's coming up next. I am somewhat into The Hound of Rowan by Henry Neff. It's ok. Not bad. Since I'm already 100 or more pages into it I might as well finish it :)

message 20: by PattyS (new)

PattyS Syp (pattysyp) Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini - Loved it -

Queen by Meg Cabot's - One of my favs

Rainbows Shadow and the Tablets of Fate by John Cicero and quite enjoying it.

message 21: by Palle (new)

Palle Dixon (palle_the_great) I'm currently reading, 'Sorrel in the Shadow of the Bear' (i don't know how to put the links up yet I'm kinda new here D= )

message 22: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) It's easy, Palle. When you're writing a post, look at the very top. There's an add book/author link that will bring up a search screen. You search for the book or author you want, then click add.

It took me some time before I noticed that, myself. :)

message 23: by Arthur (last edited Aug 13, 2010 10:30AM) (new)

Arthur (astra) Palle wrote: "(i don't know how to put the links up yet"
Have a look at the top of the box where you are typing.
There is: add book/author
Click on it. you can find a book or author and decide whether to give a name of the book Clovermead: In the Shadow of the Bear
or its cover
Clovermead In the Shadow of the Bear by David Randall
:)

message 24: by Palle (new)

Palle Dixon (palle_the_great) thank you : D i found it ^^ Sorrel: In the Shadow of the Bear

Kara (sterlink) Finishing up The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks , and beginning The Curse of Chalion (Chalion, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold as an audio book. Really enjoying both. =)

message 27: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyone) | 18 comments I just finished 'To Green Angel Tower,' Part 2 (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn) by Tad Williams. It was a long series and I definitely enjoyed it. Don't know what I'm reading next but I can't wait to start.

"Is it knock-out-excellent? The kind of book that you can't put away? (I don't care about sleep deprivation...)"

Mistborn is one of the most knock out excellent series I've ever read, with probably the best female protagonist since Snowcrash.

If you're looking for another, check out Joe Abercrombie's First Law Series. I envy anyone who hasn't discovered them yet, I wish I could read them again for the first time.

message 30: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) I ordered the Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks from the Science Fiction Bookclub. Can't wait!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Hi Sara, I really enjoyed the Night Angel Trilogy...

Jason, got mine in the same place. The first one (the omnibus edition) they sent me had some pages missing in the center... They replaced it right away, was just an odd happenstance.

message 32: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) My Night Angel trilogy came in the mail yesterday. All three books in one volume = one very fat book! LOL

message 33: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 124 comments Ron wrote: "So far have read Superluminal, Lightsabers (yeah, I know)..."

Don't apologize for reading Star Wars, as my high school physics teacher told me, it's good mind candy! :-)

As for the month of August, I'm 2/3 through Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy right now. I also tackled Eat, Pray, Love for book club and am technically in the middle of Anathem and Machiavelli's The Art of War.

message 34: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments I started The Shining Company yesterday after finishing Same Kind of Different As Me (my review). Once my daughter returns to Texas, I'll continue my in-depth re-reading of The Curse of the Mistwraith.

Other books I finished this week included The Emerald storm (my review) and Power Surge (my review).

I'm waiting for my signed copy of The Way of Kings to arrive; so in the meantime I'm reading through my borrowed shelf to return books to friends who loaned them to me months ago.

message 35: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1020 comments Finished Un Lun Dun by China Mieville last night. Loved it. Looking forward to the discussion. Now I'm reading some Star Wars. Star Wars: Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina

message 36: by William (new)

William (wilbarr17) Currently reading The Sword of the Lady and I should start Ship Breaker tomorrow.

The Way of Shadows is a great book! What are your thoughts?

message 38: by Kira4Inu (new)

Kira4Inu Kira4Inu I just finished The Last Child by John Hart and I'm not reading anything since finishing that.

message 39: by Bill (new)

Bill (kernos) | 324 comments I am now reading the 3rd book of a fantasy trilogy The Third God written by Ricardo Pinto. It is a unique epic fantasy series, very complex. I should have re-read the 1st 2 books, but didn't feel I had the time. If you like epic fantasy, I do recommend the series.

message 40: by Arthur (new)

Arthur (astra) I finished The Last Unicorn
My review

and started Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson
So far, not bad, although a bit too light...

message 41: by Carolina (new)

Carolina (carolina86) I just finished Mockingjay Mockingjay (Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins . Amazing! I highly recommend the trilogy.

message 42: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyone) | 18 comments I'm reading The Hobbit: Or There and Back Again - as a lover of fantasy (I read nothing else), I'm embarrassed to admit that while it's a fun book.... I am having trouble finishing it.

I guess I can check it off my imaginary "you-can't-love-fantasy-until-you've-read-this" list.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments It may be (a bit) the style. Tolkien's "voice" is a bit older now, but the book's well worth it once you get used to said style. Hope you enjoy it.

message 44: by Book (new)

Book (bloodwitch) Finished: Mockingjay (Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins , Mistwood by Leah Cypess , Freaks Alive, on the Inside! by Annette Curtis Klause , Worldshaker by Richard Harland , Poison by Chris Wooding

Reading: Un Lun Dun by China Miéville

message 45: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments Last week I finished The Shining Company (my review) and The Quiet Invasion (my review). This morning I picked up Song of the Beast and I'll continue my in-depth re-reading of The Curse of the Mistwraith.

Later this week, I'll post some of my August reads in my . I'll be clearing out some of that inventory to donate to my local library's fall book sale.

message 46: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments I missed this thread and have read quite a lot this month. Primarily reread Fugitive Prince, Grand Conspiracy, and Peril's Gate. While I was doing that, I listened to some audios while driving or doing other stuff -- The Dark Horse, The English Patient, and I Am Legend. Am currently listening to Death's Excellent Vacation.

Meanwhile I read the second Foreigner trilogy by C.J.Cherryh -- excellent! Last night finished The Lions of al-Rassan and am emotionally drained.

Haven't decided what to read next.
