Ruth Thwaites Can someone help me out here? I just finished reading 'The Help' and I realize that somehow i missed a crucial part of the book - I'd really appreciate if someone could fill me in. I missed the section where Minny does the 'terrible awful' thing to Miss Hilly at the start of the book . Can someone please post this missing episode.

Laura Even though they refer to it a lot throughout the book, they don't actually tell you what the "terrible awful" thing is until close to the end. All you need to know is that it is, in fact, terribly awful. Don't worry- you didn't miss anything!

Tricia you already finished the book?...do you remember anything about the fame chocolate cream pie?..;()

Judy That was a truly great part of the story. But you don't really learn the truth till near the end. Go back and look it up, it's worth reading...

Melissa Yes, it is worth reading!

Jeanna Most definitely worth reading! Don't skip it! :)

Janna I hope you have now gone back and read the missed bit. Hilarious and - the ultimate revenge although it makes me cringe.

Robin chocolate pie...

Diane Minny is probably one of the most awesome female literary characters ever! I love her! I'd love to find out what happens to her next.

Lori OUR BOOKCLUB READ IT AND LOVED IT!In fact, we are all going together to see the movie at the end of summer! and we all think from the previews , they did an amazing pick on casting!!!

Robin Wow, that is so nice, that you all are going to see the movie, I probably will see it once it goes on DVD.

Lori Robin.. we are in Ohio.. but you are more than welcome to join us!!! : )

Robin It is only a flight away. Wish they made the bridge that spans from here to the contiguous United States. I will be there in spirit, though. Have fun!!!

My book club just read it, and everyone really liked it. We are also going to go to the movie together as a group. Maybe this will be happening all over the United States on opening weekend. :)

Robin Sounds nice. I will wait 'til it comes out on DVD.

I loved Minny too! I wanted to slap her high five every time she appeared Just for having the you know what’s to do the “Terrible Awful alone!!

Deb This is truly a great read and I can’t wait to see the movie! In my neck of the woods it’s a mad dash for everyone to read it so that we can see the movie and make the comparison. So, excited.

Farrah At first when I read it, I wondered if Minny ACTUALLY put the terrible awful in the pie or just said she did.

Stacey Lynn I'll never look at a chocolate pie the same again!! Minny was GREAT! I'm looking forward to the movie. I'm hoping they didn't change the story too much. It was such a great book, to change the story for a movie would be very disappointing.

Robin I know, I wonder if they will show that part in the movie, or just the end result, no pun intended.

Stacey Lynn Robin wrote: "I know, I wonder if they will show that part in the movie, or just the end result, no pun intended."

I hope they don't show her making it! But the pie will for sure be in the movie. Though if we have to watch her eating it I think I'll cringe just thinking about it! YUCK!~

Well, if they put that part in the movie they will have to do something to convey to those who have not read the book just exactly is in that pie lol They could always show her walking into the restroom with a container..then show her dumping something from that container into the mixing bowel…she could scrunch up her nose. ROFLOL And when Hilly eats the pie, I won’t cringe, I’ll fall all over the place laughing out loud and cheering. That was one of my favorite parts of the book. To such a horrible character as Hilly, who doesn’t want her to stick it to her.Revenge is sweet it taste like Minny’s chocolate pie! Lol

Or they will just wait and have it be told in her story - like they did in the book.... having a narrator read it at the end or somethihg...
But they will surely not leave it out! LOL

They can't leave it out. It's the thing we all talk about! lol

Farrah I can't wait to see the toilet scene

Robin No she probably won't be "making" it but it has to be conveyed in some way how she gets from point A to point B. It will probably only be wet clay, not the actual thing, I am hoping..

No.. it's a movie after all. But I'm sure the "situation" will be in there in one way or another. It must be.

Robin I know.

Kendra I just finished this book last night and I also thought Minny was a terrific character! I loved her, and also wondered why she was not as strong a person with her husband. As far as the "revenge"....the "Terrible Awful" was a hoot! Think I will be using that term! Of course not actually doing it!

Robin I know, it is kinda gross. But revenge is better served cold, or in this case, HOT! Ha Ha!

Kendra Robin wrote: "I know, it is kinda gross. But revenge is better served cold, or in this case, HOT! Ha Ha!"

Good one!

Robin Thanks, what other redeeming issues happens in this book? I was sympathetic with the woman who had to send out for bottles of sedatives or something, since she had a weak stomach. I felt sorry for her and she miscarried alot of her babies. And her maid thought that she was preggers, that is a sad part of the book. Can't recall the woman's name.

Debbie Mcarthur As for how to find out about the terrible awful thing in the movie...think it shud be done just like the book. Been a while since I read it..but didn't she admit to Abileen what the terrible awful thing was? I'll be cheering too when I see Hilly eating that pie! And I think thats a wonderful idea about the book clubs goin to see the movie together. Maybe I can get my friends that have read to get with me and us go see it as a group. That wud be fun

Celia Foote. I just finished this book, and It was just great!! I read all the time, and sail through one book to the next, but now I'm sitting here, thinking, what the heck can I read NOW?!?! I feel like whatever I read next will just be a let down no matter HOW good it really is! lol Can't wait foe the movie, and I am a big fan of Emma Stone.

Robin Yes now I remember. Thanks for the information. I am an avid reader as well, between reading the Brothers Karamozov to reading mysteries, I am reading constantly. More so in the summer, due to being on vacation.

Brooke Farrah wrote: "At first when I read it, I wondered if Minny ACTUALLY put the terrible awful in the pie or just said she did."

That's what I am wondering too. Did she actually do it, or did she just trick Hilly into thinking she did?

Colby Oh, she did it. Otherwise, I don't think she would have made such a big deal out of it.

Absolute BEST poetic justice ever. I want to find Kathryn Stockett and give her a huge hug just for that part.

Joclyn Minnie wanted to include the "terrible awful" in their book as insurance to keep Hillie's silence. Yes Colby, she did do "it", what a triumphant moment. Minny had spunk and guts, she is my hero!!

Kendra The "terrible awful" is my second favorite part in the book it is really funny. If you haven't read it i would read it.
