Shelleyrae at Book'd Out | 346 comments I read about this site on a blog somewhere, joined and have 10 books to read already :)
Basically they have publishers offering a mix of ARC's and already published for review. Choose books you are interested in from the catalogue and make your requests. Then you get a yes or no answer from the publisher basically.
They are Ebooks - so you need to be able to read them on your computer or an ereader/Kindle/Ipod etc. You don't have to be a blogger or anything - I only have GoodReads basically and so far I have gotten every book Ive requested.

message 3: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32593 comments I signed up, Shelleyrae. I'll let ya know if I get any of my req'd books. Very cool. Thanks for the info. :)

message 4: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Me too--I put in requests for 14. Some were even ones I already had on my TBR. :)

Thanks Shelleyrae!

message 5: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25889 comments I've signed up too. Thanks Shelleyrae.

message 6: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I already got most of them. Awesome!

I got this from Lerner Publishing Group, and I had it on my TBR, so I'm excited. :)

Draw the Dark (Carolrhoda Ya) by Ilsa J. Bick

And I got all these from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (and I had Hunger, The SEcret of Ka and Tyger Tyger already on my TBR):

Hunger (Horsemen of the Apocalypse, #1) by Jackie Morse Kessler The Secret of Ka by Christopher Pike Tyger Tyger (Goblin Wars, #1) by Kersten Hamilton Crazy by Han Nolan The Diviner's Tale by Bradford Morrow Dead Is Just A Rumor (Dead Is, #4) by Marlene Perez

I requested these from Carina Press:

Tempting the Enemy by Dee Tenorio Dark and Disorderly by Bernita Harris Allegra Fairweather Paranormal Investigator by Janni Nell In Enemy Hands by K.S. Augustin The Sevenfold Spell by Tia Nevitt

And I didn't get them, but in the email I got, it said:

Unfortunately, the publisher has declined to allow access to the title based on the information provided in your profile. You may want to update your profile to provide more information to the publisher, and try requesting the title again. For example: double-check that you have correct links, provide a direct link to your book review blog (general life bloggers, infrequent bloggers, and new bloggers will be declined), a direct link to your Good Reads, Amazon, and/or LibraryThing profile page (infrequent and new reviewers will be declined, as well as profiles set to private).

I didn't have the direct link to my GR profile in my Net Galley profile, so I did that and re-requested them and so far have gotten two of them, still waiting on the rest.

Others I am still waiting on are:
Spy Glass (Glass, #3) by Maria V. Snyder The Fairy Godmother (Five Hundred Kingdoms, #1) by Mercedes Lackey One Bloody Thing After Another by Joey Comeau

new_user LOL. Yeah, I requested too many at first, and now I have a lot on my hands. >.< I didn't realize they actually fulfill so many requests.

message 8: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I signed up last night and received two today! Thanks Shellyrae!

I requested and received Hunger (Horsemen of the Apocalypse, #1) by Jackie Morse Kessler Dark and Disorderly by Bernita Harris

I read and reviewed Hunger today all ready!

I'm still waiting on Sins of the Heart (Otherkin trilogy, #1) by Eve Silver

I think I'm gonna go back and request more. I'm so happy!

LOl I did the same - I have lots books to read and review now. One done already and working on the second :)
I created a shelf for the ones I have here http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/...

Steph (angel4492) | 32593 comments So far I've gotten: Allegra Fairweather Paranormal Investigator by Janni Nell

:) Thanks for the info, Shelleyrae. I'll definitely be heading back over for more requests.

message 11: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32593 comments I'm going to create a shelf for mine too, if I get more than I can read/review quickly. :)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Lol. We're all so anal. I made a shelf, too. :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32593 comments Yep! :)

message 14: by new_user (new)

new_user I think we have to. In the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Giveaway rules, it mentions that the FTC demands disclosure if you got it free from the pub.

message 15: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32593 comments Even if it's not offered by Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ? Is the rule that you have to say that in your review or that you must have an "ARC" or "Free from publisher" shelf?

message 16: by new_user (last edited Aug 26, 2010 11:43PM) (new)

new_user I think the shelf is adequate, Steph. In fact, I think it's ideal, since you can easily and painlessly assign this tag to many reviews at once. It isn't limited to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. I just checked and apparently, it's a rule that the FTC established last year for all book bloggers. If you're keeping the book or there's an advertisement or Amazon link to the book anywhere in your review, then you're obligated to disclose if you received your copy free from the pub.

See here:

I'm really glad that Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ posted that notice or I would have never known, even though I'm apparently included in these guidelines for bloggers.

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments So I just signed up and requested some books, does the publisher email me once I am granted a request or do I need to go back and check the NetGalley website?

message 21: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments you will get an email if you request to accepted or denied. but sometimes it may take awhile. Since it will be Saturday I don't think you will get an email about your request til Monday or Tuesday.

message 22: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Thanks mariya!

message 23: by Shelleyrae (last edited Feb 11, 2011 07:06PM) (new)

Shelleyrae at Book'd Out | 346 comments You will get an email via netgalley telling you if your request has been approved or not. Some are pretty quick but some can be a few days.

Eventually if they like what you see the publishers will add you to their auto approved list in which case approvals are quick

message 24: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Yay! Hopefully I make the cut. So excited about this.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments I got approved for 10 so far I believe. I loaded them up onto my new Sony Pocket. I just got it today for using with my NetGalley ARCs and also library books.( It was on sale for 50 dollars off at Borders so if anyone is thinking of getting one... now is a good time.)

I am currently reading Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver . :)

The reason I got the Sony is I knew I would never get through all my galleys if I read them on the computer.

message 26: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments I had gotten Delirium but didn't read it b/c of that whole Kindle problem. Luckily I borrowed a copy. I am so happy that the kindle feature is back next month. I think I literally went insane b/c I couldn't read these on my kindle.

I haven't gotten too many titles from Netgallery. So far I have gotten Angelfire by Courtney Moulton and Delrium by Laren Oliver, but they have some great UF reads too. They Had the latest rachel morgan book by kim harrison and also the third sabrina bane book

I am glad to hear the Kindle function will be back soon. I just knew I wouldn't get them read if I had to read them on the computer. I can't read for long periods of time on a backlit screen. I love the library option with the Sony too. Can't wait to get a card and try it out. :) I have Angelfire as well. Have you read it yet? I think that was one a lot of people wanted. I am trying to decide which to read next. I guess whichever is the closest to expiring. :)

message 28: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I signed up really quickly while my kids were hanging on me, so I didn't pay attention to expiring dates. I am going to have to go back and check.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments Regina wrote: "I signed up really quickly while my kids were hanging on me, so I didn't pay attention to expiring dates. I am going to have to go back and check."

Yep most are 60 days. It is easy to forget about them with so many on the TBR and challenge books.

message 30: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Thanks!

message 31: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments I can read on my computer sometimes, like on the kindle reader. but the reader they have you read on is so UGH! I hate it. I tried and gave up. And I was like ugh, come on come on come on! I need the kindle feature back or I will go insane. I like it was out for about 2 months or something like that but it feels longer.

message 32: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Beyers (mandybeyers) | 346 comments Thanks for mentioning this site - I just signed up!

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments I have a problem... I just requested 3 or 4 more! I read the descriptions and they all sound so good! I think next month will be galley month for sure LOL. I have 1 in progress now and will probably start another when I finish. It is addictive. I can't wait to read and review more and introduce people to some books! :)

message 34: by Kelli (new)

Kelli (incababy32) | 5 comments I am really interested in doing this but I have a kindle so I will be waiting a few months. Do I need to write a lot of reviews on GR to be considered? Also, does it help to have friends? I have just been looking around for things to read next and haven't spent a lot of time building a profile. Any advice appreciated :)

message 35: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments When I first started it they denied my request I think b/c I didn't list my blog then I got approved right away for the book. I think well thought out reviews help. Not just a few sentences. A few paragraphs about what you thought of the book. I don't know how they consider you though.

message 36: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 36 comments Try not to order too many at once, pace yourself since you have to write a review when you are done. You don't want to find yourself with 50 reviews to do in one month!LOL

message 37: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments I don't even find that there are many in there that I want to read, only a couple so I think I am okay. Usually only the paranormal young adults, or I browse to see if there are any interesting UF

Most of the publishers there are ok with you posting your reviews here. Just make sure to add the link to direct them to your reviews. I recommend also adding a direct link for the review i made about the book, to this site at the bottom of every review.

If you also have a blog that you keep updated in a regular basis, also add that one in your profile. The more places or active you are at making reviews, the more books publishers will approve. Some like Hachete, Simon and Schruder, etc.; tend to be very selective on whom they approve.

Also, some publishers, like those from Religious/Christian romances. Will probably not approve you if those are not the type of books you normally read. Although they seem to make exceptions when you have an active blog, instead of just posting the reviews here.

message 39: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32593 comments I have been rejected by HarperCollins twice (for two different books - only ones I've req'd from them). Other than that, I've rec'd all I've req'd - 9 approved. One was auto-approved, by Harlequin, I'm guessing b/c I've previously read & reviewed 4 for them? Anyway, it never hurts to request, worse case they deny it. Best case, you get to read a free ARC. :D

I post a link to my GR reviews at the bottom of each NG review (on their site), like Rossy. I don't have a blog. I have thought about creating one b/c I'm sure it improves your chances of receiving a request from NG. But, never have.

message 40: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments I was denied for HarperTeens, but it was something on my profile I need to update. I re-requested and got approved. HaperCollins is a big publishing company though.

message 41: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32593 comments Also, whenever I download a book from NG that opens in Adobe Digital Editions (software, which I do not like to use), I download it to my Bluefire Reader to read on my iTouch/iPad. I don't like being locked down to my computer to read my eBooks, but like having the option, if I want. BlueFire Reader app only available for iGadget, I believe.

The reader is free and NG explains how to add their books to it.

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Steph, thank you!

I woke up to have 2 in my inbox on a Sunday morning, not what I expected -- both from Orbit/Hachette.

The Deadliest Bite (Jaz Parks, #8) by Jennifer Rardin The Enterprise of Death by Jesse Bullington

I also got very long rview times -- they want the review 2 weeks before publishing date, which for the Rardin book is in June and the other book is in March! Okay, I am super excited. Thanks for posting about this!

exciting feeling to get them already, isn't it? I remember when I got my first book from them I was super excited XD

message 45: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I wonder what the issues is with that? I assume you all have it emailed to your @free.kindle.com email address? Fortunately I have a nook, so I will download it to my Nook, but if I only had an iPhone -- I would do what Steph says above. Yeah, I have too many gadgets!

message 46: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments I thought you had a kindle. I don't even know what the issue was. They said there were some problems and they had to disable the kindle button, but I don't believe it would've taken this long to fix.

message 47: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Yes, sorry for being unclear. I have both a Kindle and a Nook. I have had a Kindle for a long time, but right before Christmas I bought a refubirshed Nook for a great price so I can check out library books and to enhance book sharing with friends. I can now share books on both Nook and Kindle which is awesome. As if I need more books to read! :)

message 48: by Shelleyrae (new)

Shelleyrae at Book'd Out | 346 comments Amazon and Netgalley had to work out the issues the new loan feature caused - the publishers don't want people able to loan ARCs. Anyway they have said that the Kindle function will be reactivated at the start of March. I use Bluefire to read on my iPod - some of the publishers are now formatting for that - Orbit did for Green Eyed Demon and that makes it tons easier.

You do have to watch those expiry dates - especially with the larger publishers. They are serious about deadlines and do check your reviews. Harlequin and Carina Press are the most likely to approve requests in my experience :)

message 49: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I figured it was a contract issue. Thanks for explaining!

message 50: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32593 comments Congrats on your new ones, Regina. Enjoy!

Hang in there, Kindlers, they'll have it fixed soon. :)
