Erin (histoire) | -1 comments Hi all!

I'm on vacation and surprised myself by falling for and then devouring Mistress of Rome. I'll now be making an unplanned stop at Shakespeare and Company in Paris so I can have something to read for the plane!

I'm pretty new to historical fiction. I loved Sandra Gulland's Josephine B trilogy, I liked The Birth of Venus but didn't love it, I also really like mysteries and have read a couple of Lindsey Davis Falco books and enjoyed them a lot.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for, I'd kind of like to have something that gets me in the mood for fall. Maybe something with a mystery or a creepy twist that isn't too dark or heavy. I guess I can't be too picky because I'm hoping to find it in Shakespeare and Co.

I've never read any HF set in any of the English periods. I'd like to try some one day but I'm put off by Philippa Gregory for some reason and I should probably not let that stop me. I'm most interested in France and Rome right now but am really open to trying new things.

Thanks for all of your help! I really look forward to hearing any recommendations. Even if icant find it in Paris, I'll be able to try some when I get home.

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments The Historian (based on Dracula) and The Thirteenth Tale (creepy twists) are kind of fall reads. I also like The Shadow of the Wind...it has a light creepy feel to it.

I'll see if I can think of anything else.

Terri Mystery...set in 16th century England.
Dissolution

Mystery...set in 19th century England
The Anatomy of Deception

Elizabeth Chadwick is a good author so if you see anything by her, check it out. Not mystery, but a very good writer.

I'll see if I can think of anything else too.

Susan | 4 comments Still Alice, a well written tale about a woman who suffers from premature alzheimers. She's a brainiac psych prof at an ivy league with an even bigger brainiac husband who's too busy to care for her as her situation devolves. You can't help but wonder, this could be me? Lizz (literarylizz) I really am liking the Sebastian St. Cyr series by C.S. Harris and Her Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen. Both series take place in and also mention places in England, France and some other countries.

Erin (histoire) | -1 comments Thank you all! I made up a list of everything since they all sounded great to me and tried to find them at Shakespeare and Co. but did not find any of them there. I couldn't believe it.

I did end up buying Outlanderin the airport in Paris this morning though. It was actually under the name Cross Stitch so I nearly missed it. I've never read any of her books and figured they seemed like a must-read.

I'm definitely going to the library afterward to get some of these recommendations, though.

Now I'm off to crash after a long, long flight and a vacation that seemed to fly by!
