PROLOGUE SOURCES:
A COMPENDIUM OF HUMAN GENE FREQUENCIES
#1
by Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza
Diamond states, "This remarkable book approximates a history of everything about everybody, because the authors begin their accounts of each continent with a convenient summary of the continent's geography, ecology, and environment, followed by the prehistory, history, languages, physical anthropology, and culture of its peoples."

Here Diamond talks about "another convenient source which is a series of five volumes entitled The Illustrated History of Humankind, ed. Goran Burenhult (San Francisco: Harper Collins, 1993-94). Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ unfortunately does not have this collection entered.
He goes on to say that there are five individual volumes in the series which are entitled, respectively, The First Humans, People of the Stone Age, Old World Civilizations, New World and Pacific Civilizations, and Traditional Peoples Today.
Of that set, these are the editions that I found listed in goodreads:
The First Humans: Human Origins and History to 10,000 B.C. - no cover had been added to goodreads by Goran Burenhult
by Goran Burenhult
by Goran Burenhult
New World and Pacific Civilizations: Cultures of America, Asia, and the Pacific by Goran Burenhult
There was no goodreads book cover available for the above.
For the last volume, Traditional Peoples Today there was no listing in goodreads.

HISTORIES OF PARTICULAR REGIONS OR ERAS
#4
Diamond states, "Several series of volumes published by Cambridge University Press (Cambridge, England, various dates) provide histories of particular regions or eras. He says that one series consists of the following:
The Cambridge History of [X], where X is variously Africa, Early Inner Asia, China, India, Iran, Islam, Japan, Latin America, Poland, and Southeast Asia.
by J.D. Fage
The above is a multi-volume set and I did not add all eight volumes on the History of Africa. Here is a link which describes the volumes
Regarding Early Inner Asia:
by Denis Sinor
Regarding China:
by Denis Crispin Twitchett
The above is the first volume in a thirteen book series (fifteen volumes however) and is the most comprehensive history of China.
Here is link to a site which identifies all volumes in the set:
Regarding India:
by Thomas R. Metcalf
The above is one of the books in the History of India - the series is divided into multi-volumes and different parts.
There are actually 40 books in the series. Here is a link to more definitive information.

Diamond also mentions another series called The Cambridge Encyclopedia of [X], where X is variously Africa, China, Japan, Latin America, the Caribbean, Russia and the former Soviet Union, Australia, the Middle East and North Africa, and India, Pakistan, and adjacent countries.
Regarding Africa:

There was no bookcover for the above.
I also looked further and found this listing in Barnes and Noble which seems to have some reasonably priced used copies. These are for a copy of the book The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Africa which is not on goodreads.

Brief Introduction:
In his prologue, Diamond says "My previous book Guns, Germs and Steel had applied the comparative method to...the differing rates of buildup of human societies on different continents over the last 13,000 years. In the present book focusing instead on collapses rather than buildups, I compare many past and prsent societies that differed with respect to environmental fragility, relations with neighbors, political institutions, and other "input" variables postulated to influence a society's stability. The "output" variables that I examine are collapse or survival, and form of the collapse if a collapse does occur." The collapses Diamond investigates include, among others, Easter Island, the Anasazi of the American Southwest, Norse settlements in Greenland, the Maya, and present-day Rwanda. He also looks at successes, including forest management in Japan and the current prosperity of Iceland after overcoming centuries of poverty and political difficulties.
Review
What caused some of the great civilizations of the past to fall into ruin, and what can we learn from their fates? Using a vast historical and geographical perspective ranging from Easter Island and the Maya to Viking Greenland and modern Montana, Diamond traces a fundamental pattern of environmental catastrophe -- one whose warning signs can be seen in our modern world and that we ignore at our peril.

Brief Review:
Human beings share 98 percent of our genes with chimpanzees. Yet humans are the dominant species on the planet, having founded civilizations, religions, communication, science, and art -- while chimps remain animals concerned primarily with the basic necessities of survival. What is it about that 2 percent difference in DNA that has created such a divergence between evolutionary cousins? Diamond explores how the human animal, in a remarkably short time, developed the capacity to rule the world ... and the means to irrevocably destroy it.

Brief Review:
Griffiths describes an extraordinary odyssey through wildernesses of earth, ice, water, and fire in this poetic consideration of the tender connection between human society and the wild. The book is by turns passionate, political, funny, and harrowing. It is also a journey into that greatest of uncharted lands -- the wilderness of the mind -- and Griffiths beautifully explores the language and symbolism that shape our experience of our own wildness.

Brief Review:
In the summer of 1854, a devastating cholera outbreak seizes London just as it is emerging as a modern city of more than 2 million people. Johnson chronicles the efforts of Dr. Snow, who risks his own life to prove how the epidemic is being spread. When Snow creates the map that traces the pattern of outbreak back to its source, he didn't just solve the most pressing medical riddle of his time. He ultimately established the way modern city-dwellers, city planners, physicians, and public officials think about the spread of disease and the development of the modern urban environment

Brief Review:
Taking readers from the melting Alaskan permafrost to storm-torn New Orleans, acclaimed journalist Kolbert approaches this monumental problem from every angle. She interviews researchers and environmentalists, explains the science, draws frightening parallels to lost civilizations and presents the moving tales of people who are watching their worlds disappear. Growing out of an award-winning three-part series for the New Yorker, she brings the environment into the consciousness of the American people and asks what, if anything, can be done to save our planet.

Brief Review:
The Map That Changed the World is, at its foundation, a very human tale of endurance and achievement, of one man's dedication in the face of ruin and homelessness. The world's coal and oil industry, its gold mining, its highway systems, and its railroad routes were all derived entirely from the creation of Smith's first map; and with a keen eye and thoughtful detail, Simon Winchester unfolds the poignant sacrifice behind this world-changing discovery.

Golden Age (no cover) by Hugh Thomas
Publishers blurb
The magisterial and enigmatic Charles V, Emperor of Europe and the New World, is the central figure in the second volume of Hugh Thomas' great history of the Spanish Empire. It begins with the return of the remnants of Magellan's expedition around the world in 1522 and ends with Charles' death in 1558. In the decades between, the Spaniards conquer Guatemala, Yucatan, Columbia, Venezuela, Peru and Chile, and control the banks of the mighty River Plate; the audacious conquistador Francisco de Orellana journeys down the Amazon, Cabeza de Vaca walks from Florida to Mexico, Juan Vazquez Coronado pioneers into New Mexico and Hernando de Soto vainly pursues worldly riches in Florida, Mississippi and Georgia. About all of these Hugh Thomas writes vividly, conveying the conquerors' almost disbelieving sense of what they were achieving. The discovery and subjugation of so many native people raised enormous controversy within Spain about how they should be treated, a debate Thomas explores perceptively, with an eye for resonances which lasted for centuries. Hugh Thomas brings alive one of the most extraordinary and influential moments in High Renaissance and world history.
I think it does in a way. For this thread I am going through all of the bibliography of Guns Germs and Steel and noting the books and references that Diamond used and/or felt were relevant to mention in his bibliography.
But by all means, current material and new material is always welcome and important to post. This should be a thread which notes all books, etc. pertinent to the discussion, the book, the people, and the events. So please post any additional that you think would be noteworthy.

by Tony Nester
Brief Synopsis:
Have you ever wondered how to walk into the wilderness and harvest your own food? Are you interested in integrating healthy, wild edibles into your diet while reducing food costs? Do you want to learn the time-tested methods for living off the land in case you become stranded in the wilds or face an emergency where the grocery shelves are empty?
