Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments Let's start a new thread for our 2011 reads. If you're laggin' in "last year", feel free to continue on the 2010 thread. :)

Happy New Year & Happy Reading!!

Sandra | 25784 comments I finished my first read of 2011 Belong To The Night (includes The Long Island Coven, #2) by Shelly Laurenston which was one of my oldest tbr for the TBR Challenge. 3.5*

message 3: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments I think I've got that one too. And, I'm almost done my first anthology First Blood (Includes Laws of the Blood, #6; Vegas Vampires, #5; Vampire Babylon, #2.5; The Guardians, #3.5) by Susan Sizemore . It's kinda like walking into a soap opera that's been on for years and trying to figure out what's going on. At least it was with the first story. 2nd one is good (Vegas Vampires, I've read some) and the rest, I'm lost again. LOL! Oh well.

message 4: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 01, 2011 05:35AM) (new)

I'm about half way through At Grave's End (Night Huntress, #3) by Jeaniene Frost I find i'm just loving this series...don't know why I waited so long to continue with it :0)

message 5: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments I'm almost halfway through Asmodeus by Dawn McClure -my first book in Mt. TBR. It's pretty awesome for the most part. I've had this book on my shelf since before I even thought ereaders were in my future & now I am ecstatic that I have one. I would've had to pay $11.70 in DTB!

message 6: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments I've finally finished Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate . I'm so happy!! It was such hard work and if I didn't have it in a challenge, I would not have finished it. I was about 100 or so pages from the end (IT WAS 452 PAGES LONG!!!) when my sister came in and (probably because I was moaning so much) read it to me to help me out. I honestly thought she was making some of the lines up lol, they were simply ridiculous. The thing is, I'm really not a 'hater' of books, I was willing to like it. Usually I can understand, even if I don't like a book myself, why other people like it, but I really really could not with this book.

Annyyywwaaayyy... I'll probably read Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins or Stardust by Neil Gaiman next :D

message 7: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I a sorry Fallen was so painful. What great sister. I am reading A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin it is amazing. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy. HBO is producing a series based on this series right now. I am also about to start my re reads of Fever.

message 8: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments I love this! Everyone's off to a great start. Well, poor, Josie. But, what a caring Sister! :D You'll love Mockingjay.

message 9: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Lol, thanks! She thinks so ;) Jk, she did really help since she changed some of the character's names and made it a little more entertaining! I am so excited about Mockingjay (although don't really want it to end!) and I think I'll enjoy the book even more after reading a not-so-good one :)

message 10: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments LOL! That's fun, like bedtime stories, cute. Can I borrow her?

I felt the same about it, but couldn't wait any longer.

message 11: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 612 comments Happy New Year everyone!.

For the month of Jan, I'm kicking off with Rumors (Luxe, #2) by Anna Godbersen as part of my many challenges then;
Kushiel's Dart (Kushiel's Legacy, #1) by Jacqueline Carey Goddess of the Sea (Goddess Summoning, #1) by P.C. Cast Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder After Dark (Harmony, #1) by Jayne Castle Night Embrace (Dark-Hunter, #2) (Were-Hunter, #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Dance With The Devil (Dark-Hunter, #3) by Sherrilyn Kenyon and some stand alone in between. Happy Reading.

message 12: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Holy moly, 2011 thread, can't believe it's a new year already!!

Ok, that's out of my system.

Josie - bummer about Fallen. Torment improves quite a bit in case you were at all interested in continuing the series. I think it's a series that will grow better with each book.

Regina - I have started AGoT twice now, and I like it each time, but the length gets to me, I put it down and never pick it up again. I also don't want to get attached because I'm not sure the series is ever going to get finished. People have been waiting for book 5 for YEARS :(

message 13: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments Yeah, that's insane. My hubby reads (or has read some) that series. He's looking forward to the show. I posted a bit about it in the movies/TV folder a while ago. I'm sure I'll watch it with him, but don't know that I'll tackle the books.

message 14: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Vivian I am worried that it will never be completed bc the author is not young. It is definitely a fatty and occasionally I am frustrated that I am not whittling down my TBR shelf for this month. But I am so in love with this book right now. Only about 35% in though.

message 15: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Gosh, I realized I'm being a downer. I'm glad you're reading a book you love! I'm sure the series will get finished one day :)

message 16: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Lol. I have had the same thoughts so pls no worries.

message 17: by Desperado (last edited Jan 01, 2011 09:55PM) (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Finished Asmodeus by Dawn McClure & I'm stunned. I started & finished this sucker in less than 24 hrs which is rare for me. I think ereaders are making me read faster.

Now on to my 2nd "Mt. TBR" book, Healer's Choice (Ghostland World, #3) by Jory Strong interspersed with a smutty novella, Mistress Christmas (Wild West Boys, #1) by Lorelei James .

message 18: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments LOL! Enjoy your smutty novella. I think I read faster with my eReader v. PB too.

message 19: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Finished my first Mt. TBR read! The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon .
A decent read to start off the year, 3 1/2 stars.

message 20: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments WTG, Vivian! Cute cover. :)

I'm getting back to Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye (Psychic Eye Mystery, #1) by Victoria Laurie . I like it so far (about 30% done). My 2nd "first" of the year. January last year I read a TON of firsts, I'm hoping this year to have a better mix of firsts & continuing books. I have SO many series I want to keep up with, but can't seem to keep myself from starting new ones along the way! :)

message 21: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Steph wrote: "LOL! Enjoy your smutty novella. I think I read faster with my eReader v. PB too."

Thanks, Steph! I'm glad I'm not the only one who readers faster in digital. Enjoy Abby Cooper!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Steph you'll have to let me know how you liked Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye (Psychic Eye Mystery, #1) by Victoria Laurie I'm a big fan of her other series What's a Ghoul to Do? (Ghost Hunter Mystery, #1) by Victoria Laurie I plan on reading the latest in that series Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls (Ghost Hunter Mystery, #5) by Victoria Laurie once I get my first 2 Mt.TBR books done

message 23: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments I didn't remember that one was by her too. I want to check that one out too. Glad to hear you like it. Abby's good so far. I'll share my review when I'm done.

message 24: by Literary Ames (last edited Jan 02, 2011 03:47PM) (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments My first book of 2011 was a free Kindle short about some vampire lovin' Catching Caroline by Sylvia Day .
It was perfect for my mood but as always too short for much characterisation or depth.

My last books of 2010 were Stolen A letter to my captor by Lucy Christopher and Darkness Under the Sun by Dean Koontz . Stolen was excellent, I highly recommend it. Beware of Stockholm Syndrome though. I'm suffering from it now! The Koontz book was boring, not scary at all.

message 25: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments The first book I finished this year was Lean Mean Thirteen (Stephanie Plum, #13) by Janet Evanovich . A light and fun start to the New Year, lol.
Just started reading The Sweet Scent of Blood (Spellcrackers.com, #1) by Suzanne McLeod . So far so good.

message 26: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments Good to know, Ames (both books).

message 27: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Oh, I've heard good things about Stolen A letter to my captor by Lucy Christopher . Glad you enjoyed it.

Read Beauty A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley as my second Mt. TBR read. I was a little disappointed overall, thought it was a little over-rated.

Next couple books on the list The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins and Black Wings (Madeline Black, #1) by Christina Henry . Super excited about both :)

message 28: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments @ Kerstin: The Stephanie Plum series used to be one of my favorites! :)

@ Amy: I just found out about Stolen A letter to my captor by Lucy Christopher and I can't wait to read it.

@ Vivian: Enjoy Hunger Games!

Stardust is such a fun book! However, it is one of the few books where I liked the small change made to the ending in the movie even better than the end of the book. (Of course, I saw the movie first, so that may have made a difference.)

message 30: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments Regina wrote: "@ Kerstin: The Stephanie Plum series used to be one of my favorites! :)

It still is one of my faves. Granted, they are a bit repetitive after a while, but they never fail to make me laugh-out-loud!

message 31: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments @Amanda: I absolutely LOVE the film! The film was the reason I picked up the book and so far, I'm enjoying it. Not sure yet if I'm going to prefer the book or film, it's usually the book (even when I see a film first) but this may be the exception to the rule! :)

message 32: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25784 comments Love the cover, but no, absolutely no plans to read it. Especially after you 2 have bagged it! LOL.

message 33: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments I'm not sure whether it was because it was 200 pages too long or lack of plot/no connection to the characters or just Lauren Kate's style of writing, I just didn't get on with it. But I do agree that the cover is lovely, the best thing about the book IMO. Thank goodness I only borrowed it and not paid £10 (!) for it- I'd be so gutted!
Lol and I don't really want to put anyone off it, you may possibly find it enjoyable... apparently over 5000 people found it "amazing" :P

message 34: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25784 comments LOL, yours is not the first negative review of that book that I've seen. I had no plans to read it anyway, so don't feel bad.

Glad you didn't buy it. It's always horrible if you've spent good money on a book and it's just awful. Glad you don't have that problem!

message 35: by CyberAlmu (new)

CyberAlmu | 302 comments I've just finish Last Sacrifice, the most recent book in the Vampire Academy Series, which was just brilliant. It kept me smiling like an idiot for an hour after putting it down.

I'm now reading The Eye of the Moon, it is going to be difficult to get used to the writing style, which I personally find a bit too aggressive compared to Richelle Mead's prose.

message 36: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments @Sandra: Phew! Oh good! I'd hate to put someone off a book they've been looking forward to or would've liked had they read it :)

@Cyberalmu: Oooh, glad you liked 'Last Sacrifice', I'm reading that in the next few days. So excited, I absolutely love that series!! One of the few books I've actually bought full-price (albeit with a Waterstones card I got for Christmas) :D

message 37: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments I have seen a bunch of less than flattering comments about Fallen as well. Shame.

Cyberalmu, glad you enjoyed the finale to VA. I am anxious to read her spin-off. Wondering how it'll compare.

message 38: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Steph wrote: "I have seen a bunch of less than flattering comments about Fallen as well. Shame..."

I have Fallen but I don't have the urge to read it all. It's right at the bottom of the TBR, possibly permanently. At least I didn't pay full retail for it.

message 39: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments The cover was like a venus fly trap. :)

I'm currently reading Pack Challenge (Magnus Pack, #1) by Shelly Laurenston and loving it so far. The snarky comments between the girl friends is making LOL to the point where my hubby was givin' me the "seriously?!" eyes. AND hottie shifters, what's not to love?

message 40: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments @Steph - The second book, Go Fetch!, gave me sore ribs I was laughing so hard! I've never cried so much because I was happy either. Miki is a blast! She's baaaad to the bone.

message 41: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments Miki is an absolute RIOT! Yay! I'm so glad to see her book is next. :D

message 42: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Hehe, gotta question my taste now, because I liked Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate . It was about 150 pages too long, after finishing it, I was confused like no other, and the love story is just lame...wait, I said I liked it, right? It's like Twilight to me, so flawed, but I can't not read it, lol.

That being said...anyone else like it here?

message 43: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25784 comments I'm into Kiss of Fire (Dragonfire, #1) by Deborah Cooke dragon shifters, what not to love!

Steph, glad to hear you're loving Pack Challenge (Magnus Pack, #1) by Shelly Laurenston you're gonna love Go Fetch! (Magnus Pack, #2) by Shelly Laurenston then Here Kitty, Kitty! (Magnus Pack, #3) by Shelly Laurenston The characters appear sporadically throughout the rest of the pride & pack serieses....

message 44: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments I want to start that series too, Sandra. Thanks! I'm looking forward to the rest of those and hope to read PRIDE in 2011 as well. Do the characters cross over between the pack & pride series or are they separate?

message 45: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25784 comments You'll get mentions and the ocassional character will pop up, but not in any meaningful way. Just in a nice I know who you are way!

The Dragon series & the Gathering series don't cross over at all, but all the others do to a limited degree.

message 46: by Kerstin (new)

I felt a bit like you. I saw all the flaws, but somehow still quite enjoyed it.
I read Torment as well and have to say that was a bit tedious for me to get through.

message 47: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments Ingi, my vote is for you to start Nalini's Psy-Changelings. I love that series! I enjoyed Ravenous. I haven't read any of the Sentinel series yet though. Whatever you pick - Enjoy!

message 48: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

message 49: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments My first 5 star book of 2011 is...
The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins

I'm not gonna lie, the premise of the book...that is some f-ed up sh*$! Even having a vague idea before reading, I was almost too disturbed to go on by the time they actually entered the 'game'...but I did, and it was good stuff :) Definitely understanding the hype now.

message 50: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I agree, I haen't read the others, but enjoyed Slave to Sensation.
