New and improved BOM Rules as of October 2, 2018. :-)

The BOM Captain is Jordan Lombard.

1.) Whenever Josh has a book coming out in a given month, that’s our BOM choice! :-D

2.) The genres we read include M/M Romance (including all subgenres) and gay fiction (including all genres). In short, as long as there’s a gay main character, we’ll read it.

3.) We take nominations for one week, which is announced in the group threads, the second Thursday of every month.

a. One nomination per person, please.

b. Nominations that are seconded by someone else are placed in the poll.

c. Nominations that don’t get picked as BOM can be re-nominated at any time.

4.) The poll then goes up for one week, and the link is listed in the group threads, the third Thursday of every month.

5.) If it looks like there’s going to be a tie, the BOM Captain will remind readers who haven’t voted to vote. If there is a tie, we will read the second book the following month.

6.) Poll winners are announced on the fourth Thursday of every month.

7.) On the first day of each month the currently reading section will get updated and a new thread will be created to discuss the new book.

a. Readers can start discussing the book at any time during the month, just be aware that there will be spoilers in the thread.

8.) Readers can choose to read the book in any format they like whether it’s in print, ebook, or audiobook. Feel free to bring all of your reading/listening experiences to the discussion!

9.) We are choosing books one month early to give people a chance to get a copy through their library. As an example, in January we are selecting books for March.

10.) For December, Josh gets to choose what we read!

**NEW JANUARY 2022**

JOSH REREADS

Every year, beginning in 2022, we will reread four of Josh's titles!

In October we will nominate and vote on four different themes for the upcoming year. Themes can include things like seasons, job titles, subjects such as art or history, amateur sleuths, ghosts, and whatever else you can think of. Jordan will pick five of Josh's titles that fit the themes for each reread and everyone will have a week to suggest changes before voting on the final five books.

Here is the voting and rereading schedule:

- February reread (vote in December)
- May reread (vote in March)
- August reread (vote in June)
- November reread (vote in September)

If there are any questions or comments, don't hesitate to ask!

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) That is so open ended Josh with so many books to choose from The MM Group (which you should join even though you’re too busy for it) always as a theme (best age difference, favorite couple, blah blah) for their book of the month nominations which helps to narrow down the suggestions.

Blaine (blainedarden) I suggest Something About Trevor by Drew Hunt , since that title came up in the 'What else are you reading' thread.

I read the blurb, but couldn't get past "And gay men don’t play cricket" without laughing. Anyone remember Maurice (Twentieth Century Classics) by E.M. Forster ? (I love that cricket scene in the film)
Not to mention that one of the MCs in my novel used to play cricket ...
So, no ... gay men don't play cricket at all *giggles*

message 4: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 06, 2011 11:06AM) (new)

We can set turns - each month someone else gets to suggest the titles. We can do it in the order of appearance in this thread. For example (if we take this specific thread) first Josh gets to suggest (and he already did), then Bubbles, Anita and I... and after me the next person who posts.
Or we can arrange some sort of lottery (need to think how to do it though).
Or Josh can just randomly decide who will be the next Master of Titles.

It seems to me that if everyone starts randomly suggest their books, things can get out of hand very fast.
All the participants would be free to try and influence the Master of Titles but in the end it's him/her only who makes a poll :)

Oh gosh. Well, the thing is we can always discuss any book at any time. We've got that whole What Are You Reading thread, so I'd say we limit it to...

(yes, josh???)

Well, it would be fun to pick stuff that NO ONE has read, but that's probably unrealistic.

Or stuff that the big M/M Reading group isn't reading, since a lot of you already belong to that.

Or...hmmm...okay let me think about the details of it. And in the meantime, does anyone have a book they really, really want to read and discuss for April?

In general, I want to be reading more than I have been so I'm hoping not to limit myself to just what we read here as a group.

BUT speaking of limits, I'd say that the selections need to be ebooks (no print only) and easy to get hold of. And less expensive would be good, so maybe stuff available on the discount sites like Fictionwise, etc?

And the cricket thing sounds fun to me and Drew Hunt has been discussed recently, so we can put that one into next month's poll, sure!

message 7: by Bubbles Hunty (new)

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) Josh if you wanted to use this as a way to read what you have already purchased and just not read yet then you should make a GR shelf with the books (like owned-to-read or purchased) so we can use that to help our suggestions

That's a great idea. You guys don't have to be limited by that, though

I like the suggestion of Josh making a list of the books he has but hasn't read.

BTW, fictionwise is having a sale that ends today. I think they have all 3 books that are in the poll. The code is 030411 for 40% off.

I always find out about their sales on GR! Jason does a great job of keeping track of all the sales over in the m/m group, and everyone else is good about chipping in with anything he misses.

They supposedly send out newsletters, but I never get them. The way I find out about sales is through Jason's Discounts and Sales of the Week thread in the m/m group on GR. Here's the link for the upcoming week http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5....

Thanks for the tip. I didn't even know I already had an account there.
Hubby is so going to kill me, though, because I already bought some books from Rainbow eBooks earlier (which makes today's total 6 books, including two of Josh's titles that I'd read, but not owned yet).
Guess I won't be buying any new books soon ...

Ah, I've found the correct thread for book of the month! lol.

I'm thinking we shouldn't do the same thing as the m/m group. We should be different. I'm kind of liking the seconded option, or even thirded, if we get enough suggestions. And that way everyone can suggest a book. Perhaps we limit it to everyone who wants to suggest something can suggest no more than two books at a time. I'm sure there will be months when some people might not suggest anything at all too which would even things out a little bit perhaps.

I'm also going to repeat what I said in the other thread, now that we're officially over here... as Josh pointed out, there shouldn't be print only books, but I would also turn that around and say no ebook only too. If we can find books that are ebooks but also in print, that works well for everyone.

So long as the books are affordable. That's my thing. I don't want to encourage pirating, god knows.

message 20: by Lora (last edited Mar 07, 2011 03:05PM) (new)

Lora | 58 comments I was going to laugh at you about the pirating thing. But then I started searching here on GR for Finding Zach so I could see where to buy it in ebook form. It came up available in Google ebooks and when I went to their site it indicated it was an ebook made from scanned pages. I thought that was kind of weird, so I went to the publishers site and bought a nice normal epub copy from them. I figure the Google version wasn't a true pirated version, but it icked me out that scanned pages were being sold that way.

ETA: No, I don't think pirating is funny. I just thought your mention of it here was kind of odd. I'm guessing it is on your mind.

message 21: by Merith (new)

Merith | 361 comments March isn't half over yet, but there doesn't seem to be many suggestions listed.

The suggestion for Josh to add to his 'Own but not read' shelf is a good one. *nudge* But requires some work on someone's behalf.

I also like the idea of us readers offering up stories to use. From other threads in other communities, I know it can get unmanageable, but I think we all can be counted upon to behave ourselves. Especially if we lay some ground rules down.

That's it. That's what I got off my laptop. There's a ton more on my desktop but I still can't access it, so...this is a starting point.

I think the idea of someone proposing a title and then seeing if someone else can second it, is a good idea. That way we know that atleast two people are actively interested in reading it.

So we have a number of titles suggested for April. Do we have anyone willing to second any of them?

I think my only thought for "rules" would be that personalities be kept out of the choosing and discussing. Meaning we stick to discussing the book and not get into the fact that the author is an A-hole.

If it's an author who belongs to this group, we let them know they're discussing the book?

And that two different people must champion the book? Someone to suggest, someone to second? But that if we don't get enough suggestions, we take the first three or four books proposed and put them into the poll?

I want to keep it fairly simple.

Oooh a mystery! I love mysteries and since someone (who shall remain nameless) isn't putting out for another month or so, I may have to pick this one up even if it doesn't make it for the April pick.
Amazon is not going to work for me, but I see it is from Dreamspinner, and I can buy direct if need be.

message 38: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (ysareader) This is just my opinion, but I feel Cut & Run is pretty weak in the mystery department. It kind of had me tearing my hair out in spots. I sense the authors are romance writers first & mystery writers second, unlike Josh. ( I say this as someone who has read the series & will probably get the next book. I have a kind of love/hate relationship with these books)

Self Preservation is one of Ethan Day's earlier works... maybe even the first one published? Not sure about that. It's a RomCom with relationship angst, but not so bad you want to cry. You just feel badly for those involved. It is in Ethan's unique style and ends happily.

I think everyone is invited to participate. Josh got us started a little late for March, but obviously suggestions for the April read are still open. Suggest a book, get someone to second it and Josh will make a poll to vote on it at some point.

Well, in one of the other conversations separate from this one I suggested two books: Mahu-a Hawaiian Mystery by Neil Plakcy and False Colors by Alex Beecroft, which is a historical navy novel.

Not to shoot anyone's idea down or anything, but I started to read Cut and Run once. Got two chapters in and got rid of the book. I couldn't stand the unreadability of it because it seemed (to me) that there was no editor present. But, that's just me. If there are enough people interested in it, then go ahead. Though, I seem to recall a conversation about this book somewhere else in this group awhile ago too. It seemed to be split equally as to who liked or didn't like it. Oh well.

I honestly don't remember the editing issue with CUT & RUN. What stands out the most for me in this book and the rest of the series is the complexity of the 2 protags. I felt that this hadn't been seen a lot before except in Josh' work. That's why I recommended the book.

I wanted to like it, I really did. But they used SO many adverbs and so many dialogue tags that were unnecessary, it was distracting.
After reading so many bad pieces of fanfic and living with it, I've become a picky writer, and things like that, or stories that are unrealistic or unbelievable, just bug me and become difficult to read.

message 48: by Susan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15333 comments Mod
Susan wrote: "Hi Anna. Please ezplain what a dialog tag is. Thanks."

A dialogue tag is "Jack said" put at the end of his line of dialogue. Generally speaking, you don't put these at the end of EVERY line, because readers can easily figure out who's speaking without them, and they can get clunky.

I just found that the authors of Cut and Run had tags at the end of almost every line of dialogue, and in most cases, they also ended in adverbs: "Jack said sinfully" for example. It drove me nuts.

Hope this helps!

message 50: by Susan (new)

Susan | 807 comments Thanks Anna. It definitely does help. I have seen the phrase thrown about quite often, and did think that was what it referred to, but I just wanted to be sure. Thanks again for the clarification.
