Maybe you'd better challenge yourself to 3 or 4 Maggie!! LOL

Is "A Boy And HIs Dog" a film adaptation of Harlan Ellison's classic short story of some years ago?

Monya (aka Mary)

message 55: by Khenan (new)

Khenan Bragador | 140 comments Yup its an adaptation of the book :) interested to see how it differs though (i find novels are usually better than their adaptations) :)

message 56: by Adhityani (new)

Adhityani (dhitri) Not much of a sci fi reader but I have William Gibson's Zero History sitting on my virtual bookshelf (yep one of those nights where my finger moved faster than my brain! click click - paypal - click click and suddently I have a new ebook in my hard drive). I may then decide to read the first and second book of this 'informal trilogy', namely Pattern Recognition and Spook Country...

Sharon | 160 comments My aunt suggested ages ago that I might like Robin Hobb so this challenge is the perfect opportunity to read one of her books. I will be reading Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, #1) by Robin Hobb .

I'm reading both these for May challenges in other groups so I might as well put both in here as well :)

message 61: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 160 comments I may have to change my book for this challenge because the book I have chosen has gone missing from my local libray (and from several other libraries in the region...) and even though they have a new copy on order it may not get here on time.
If it doesn't arrive in time I might read City of Fallen Angels.

I'm hoping I will like COFA as I have loved the first three in the series but have read very mixed reviews. People seem to love it or absolutely hate it.

Lauren Keegan (lauren_keegan) | 53 comments I've signed up! I plan to read the debut novel of an Australian author, Nicole Murphy. Her novel Secret Ones is the first of a sci fi series. Haven't heard of her before but bought her first two books from my local Borders closing down sale. Hope i like it!

message 68: by Bron (new)

Bron (bron23) | 69 comments I have started reading The Left Side of Darkness by Ursula K de Guin for the challenge. Found a copy through my library. Thanks for the recommendation Monya as I never would have known to look for this book otherwise.

Looking forward to reading something I wouldn't have otherwise chosen.

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

started American Gods by Neil Gaiman :D

message 70: by Khenan (new)

Khenan Bragador | 140 comments Finished A Boy and His Dog (granted it was only like 50pages or so ;o)
Absolutely loved it!:) might read Vic and Blood (not sure if its a prequel or sequel or whatever) or I, Robot if i find it :D

message 71: by Neko (new)

Neko I'm currently playing Wall.e that should cound :p

But otherwise I will be reading Chew Just Desserts. Hopefully start it tonight..Will be a quick read so it's all good :D

message 72: by Dale (new)

Dale Renton (dalerenton) I'll be reading 'The Dreaming Void', by Peter F Hamilton. I haven't read anything from "Britain's number one science fiction writer" (according to the cover blurb) so trust it will entertain for its substantial 791 pages. It's been a while since I read straight SF, so looking forward to this.

For anyone struggling to choose a book - you might find my novel 'Half Moon' worth considering if you enjoy epic fantasy. ;)

Louise (loupie) Day 1 - Book 1 - Burn Bright (Night Creatures, #1) by Marianne de Pierres
Mmmmmm - Burn Bright by Marianne de Pierres
Oh, this is goooood stuff! YA/sci-fi/horror and an Aussie author. It's got night creatures, pirates in zeppelins, the ultimate "ever-night, ever-youth, never-sleep" party island, gorgeous clothes, deadly games, mean girls, friendship, great world-building and more. Whatever you do, don't leave the path, baby bats!
Definitely recommending to anyone still wondering what to read for this challenge.

Dee-Ann | 644 comments I plan to read The Handmaid's Tale. Have been wanting to read this for a while and managed to borrow a copy (large print) from the library.

message 77: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andreakhost) Finished Heart's Blood - a very atmospheric variation on Beauty and the Beast set during the Norman invasion. [And one of the Aurealis nominees - couldn't get more appropriate for this challenge!]

message 78: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) I haven't even started the two books I wanted to read this month. I want to finish A Game of Thrones first (luckly that book would count too)

message 79: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 160 comments I have finished City of Fallen Angels. I thought it was quite good. Can't wait for the next installment.
I am still hoping the Robin Hobb book will get here before the end of May so I can read it too.

message 80: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments This is one of my favourite genre, of course you have to add romance to it - but paranormal/fantasy is my favourite - I don't know if I would SciFi as such but I they are related.

I have just read Halfway to the Grave by Jeanienne Frost and give it 4*

message 81: by Adhityani (last edited May 07, 2011 10:02PM) (new)

Adhityani (dhitri) I'm afraid I picked the wrong book to read! While William Gibson is famous for his sci fi writing, the book that I chose to read this month (book:Zero History|7745031]) is NOT sci fi as it set in contemporary time. And it's very... how should I put this... CHEWY. So difficult to get through the first few chapters because the premis of the plot is absurd. A giant ad/marketing company employs strange people to get to the grounds of a secret denim that is exclusively traded... it's just strange! Anyway, I've decided to drop this book (not very consistent, eh?) and move on to another read, but this time will need to make sure that it's sci fi for real![

message 82: by Adhityani (new)

Adhityani (dhitri) Glad to hear you like Emma-Louise! I personally think she's going to be BIG soon, what a talent!

Anyway, I have decided what to move on to, it's Connie Willis' latest "duology" -- essentially a book that was too long to be sold as one, so the publishers decided to split it into two.. Connie Willis is an award-winning sci fi author and has a big following, this one is said to have provoked polarizing reactions among her fans, some love it and some utterly detested it! Be pretty interested to find out. It's sci fi but combines historical fiction as it is about time travel.

Blackout (All Clear #1) by Connie Willis and All Clear (All Clear, #2) by Connie Willis

Library has lost it's copy but have put in a request to purchase and I'll be first to have it. So maybe not this month. Will just be Death of Grass

Review of Touched By a Alien

Love this book and yet it took a long time, for me, to read. Guess it was just because there was so much going on.

It was like a hyped up X Files episode from the Aliens perspective and not Mulder and Scullys.

Our intrepid heroine Katherine "Kitty" Katt is snarky, impulsive, clever and just darn good fun. We meet her as she takes out a monster who she later learns is an alien parasite infecting angry people. She calls them "fuglies".

Jef Martini, our alien hero, an empath, immediately falls in love with her, and seriously freaks her out.

The whole supporting cast of characters including the Kitty's Mossad, anti-terroist consultant mom and her dad the NASA cryptologist masquerading as a history professor are priceless.

Glad I've already got the next 2 in the series to read.

Oh, and all the covers are works of art!

Blackout/All Clear has a wealth of fascinating detail about the Blitz, and a very intriguing story, but it's unfortunately buried in about twice as many words as would have worked for me. Still worth reading, though.

Review of Alien Tango

Book #2 of the Kitty Katt series and it was just as good as the first one.

Again a super hyped up X Files episode on drugs. LOL. This time the evil villans are human and not Superbeings from Outter Space.

Kitty and Jef and the rest of the Alpha team have been training and doing the usual when things go to hell and it seems that everyone is trying to kill them. It's political, it's a stalker, it's the potential mother-in-law from hell; pick all of the above.

Another fun filled episode, looking forward to the next one.
