Happy Monday! I'm starting this week with Rise Again by Ben Tripp and finally gonna get around to reading The Hellion And The Highlander by Lynsay Sands.

I read A Little Bit Wild by Victoria Dahl over the weekend and I Loved It!!

Theresa Romain | 420 comments Okie, I loved ALBW too! Such a fun flip of the usual gender roles.

I'm still reading David McCullough's The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris, 1830-1900 -- got to get my history in! But I'll be back to romance next. Probably Laura Kinsale's Lessons in French.

I have been reading old Mary Baloghs--the short story A Precious Rogue, The Lady with a Black Umbrella, and next are Christmas Beau and A Counterfeit Betrothal. Every so often I check what is reasonably priced on Alibris--these had all been pretty expensive but for some reason the prices had come way down.

I am reading The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray. It is the third and final book in the Gemma Doyle series.

I've recently finished Kaki Warner's Heartbreak Creek, which I loved (review at THE Romance Dish tomorrow); Lorraine Heath's Waking Up With the Duke, which I liked with one major reservation (review at Just Janga today); and Gwen Burrowses's The Soldier, which I won't review because I'm so ambivalent about it. Up next are Susan Mallery's Only Mine and Sarah Mayberry's One Good Reason.

Irisheyes | 896 comments Finished up THE SUMMER OF YOU by Kate Noble and ANGEL'S REST by Emily March. Both were decent reads took me a while to get through both of them. I headed back to Cheryl St. John (BADLANDS BRIDE and THE GUNSLINGER'S BRIDE) again to try to jump start something - just not in the mood to read this week!

Can't wait for Kaki Warner's new release, Janga. And I forgot about Lorraine Heath's release this month also. Definitely something to get excited about.

I would love to hear your thoughts about the Soldier, Janga. I too had very ambivalent reactions.

I'm still working on Jami Alden's BEG FOR MERCY. Taking me forever to finish it because I keep getting distracted by other things.

Reading some fluffy Harlequin presents. Was in the mood for some prices/sheiks/tycoons and stuff... And they are short so to read in one day with time to spare for learning :D

Just finished The Heir. I has very ambivalent reactions about it too, for the same reasons as the Soldier. The relationships she creates feel real but she ignores too much of the historical period and too much of the plot is unbelievable.

With both The Heir and The Soldier, I found myself seduced by the characters and their relationships and loving the bigness of the story. But my brain kept intruding with thoughts about credibility of plot and even of characters. For example, the physical expressions of affection between the men kept me wondering if an English male of the period would be so demonstrative. And I alternated between delight and total disbelief in Winnie. Still, I plan to read The Virtuoso.

Janga, I had the same problems. Little things--like having Anna make what sound like American muffins which would have been called tea cakes--and big things--like the very mixed social status of Emma in The Soldier--and also just lots of implausible things, like getting a house furnished so quickly and knowing exactly what went where when Anna had only seen it once. Still, the relationships really work....

I'm on a Jayne Ann Krentz reading binge, of all things . I needed something totally frivolous...

message 17: by Susan (new)

Susan (susaninaz) | 1075 comments Sorry I haven't posted in a while. On Sunday, June 19th, we were forced to flee from our home because the wildfire was out of control and about 3/4 mile from our house. We stayed with friends for 4 days, and got to return on Thursday to our thankfully undamaged house. Very stressful. I did not read at all during that time. This morning, I finished Jo Beverley's Forbidden, recently re-released. It was excellent, but I am still unsure what was forbidden? It seems that the title was randomly stuck on a story where it does not belong. Ah, publishers.

Yikes, Susan! That's so scary! I'm glad your house was undamaged.

Re: Forbidden, yeah it's title was kind of random. Not quite as unfitting as some Harlequin's I've read, like THE SECRET MISTRESS ARRANGEMENT which featured neither a secret mistress, nor an arrangement. But close...

I've always thought what was Forbidden was Serena's freedom--freedom to choose her own husband, freedom to enjoy sexual pleasure.

message 20: by Susan (new)

Susan (susaninaz) | 1075 comments It might have been Francis's mother, Cordelia, who finally gained the freedom to marry a man outside her rigid social class; who would have been forbidden when she was young.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. The house is fine, and our cat was a perfect houseguest. She established a condition of detente with the blind Lhasa Apso. The dog stopped cornering her, and they both pretended to ignore each other. I think she misses the dog now.
