Hey guys, just wanted to point out that we have three new reading group guides for Fatale by Jean-Patrick Manchette The Pumpkin Eater by Penelope Mortimer The Judges of the Secret Court A Novel About John Wilkes Booth by David Stacton . We don't need to use these guides, or choose these books, but thought I'd throw it out there. Any interest in choosing a book for August? I'll make some suggestions, but there didn't seem to be many takers last time I posted.

Nick

Sarah (sarahj) Hi -
Where do the reading guides come from? Are they on the NYRB site?
A reading group for NYRB might interest me. What's the idea - picking a book and reading it here at Good Reads? Sorry, I missed the previous post on this.
I have "Skylark" on my shelf waiting to be read, so I'd be keen on that if anyone else is intereted.
cheers
sarah

Hi Sarah,

Yes, the reading guides are on our website:

You got the idea pretty much--picking one of our titles, reading it, and discussing on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. We could start with Skylark if you're interested. Not sure if anyone else but the two of us will be involved, but they might join.

Nick

Sarah (sarahj) Thanks for the link. I didn't realize you had reading guides - I looked through one and it was very interesting.

I'd be totally up for reading Skylark as long as someone plays along. I'm in the middle of a so-so book at the moment.

cheers

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Just want to point out that Skylark is supposed to be quite grim. I'd like very much to be a part of this discussion, but I guess something a little more...upbeat...would be my choice. A perfect summer book is The Go-Between, but if you have your heart set on Skylark, I'll go along.

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Nick, wishing more of NYRB books available as audio or efiles. Any words of encouragement?

We often don't have the rights to e-books or audio books. For audio books the popular titles are Hard Rain Falling and A Savage War of Peace: Algeria 1954-1962. For e-books we are putting out whichever ones we get the rights for in frontlist titles, and are going backwards to add previously published books. Recently we added a bunch of Elizabeth Hardwick and Alberto Moravia titles.

I'd be down to do The Go-Between, I hear it's a real summer book, and someone just describe it to me as like Atonement but better.

Sarah you okay with that?

Nick

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahj) I read The Go-Between years ago, but I don't have a copy so I'd rather sit that one out. Please go ahead - I will enjoy reading what y'all think, and hopefully I can jump in on the next one.

message 9: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Okay, forget The Go-Between. Are you up for The Summer Book by Tove Jansson or do you just really want to do Skylark? I will do that if you are focussed on that right now.

message 10: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) By the way, S., I looked at your website and was rapt looking at "Attending the Tasting." Would be pleased to read a book alongside you, even if it is a bit grim.

I did want to just clarify our e-book situation. We have over 50 of our titles as e-books currently, and many more coming. They are available through all e-book retailers, but at the moment I've only got a complete list on the Amazon Kindle site:

&

Again, this is a (actually two) list of all our titles available as e-books, and although the list is on Amazon, you can buy any of the titles at your preferred e-book retailer.

Hope this helps everyone.

Nick

message 12: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Thanks, Nick. That does help, but only if they are not all Kindle formats. I'll check on B&N--I have a couple nooks, but Kindle formatting won't work on it.

message 13: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I have a kindle and am thrilled that you are kindalizing so many of your books, tho the books themselves are so nicely done.

message 14: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I just joined this group today. Reading this thread to see what people are interested in reading. I have The Summer Book waiting to be read. Loved The Go-Between.

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahj) Hi -
My problem is I live in Germany (without a Kindle) so it takes some time to get a book. I really don't want to hold you up, so please go ahead.
Maybe if a reading group takes off here, we could make a sked so whoever is interested knows beforehand which book is coming up.

(and thanks Trish for the compliment!)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Okay, I'm keen for anything, really. I ordered Skylark and will order The Summer Book to be ready for anything. I already read The Go-Between as well, and you can see my review here. There is another way we can all participate, reading whatever we like. It takes a bit of management, but I'd love to do it. Just like has created a , it would be great to have a NYRB Challenge. One writes reviews of the NYRB books one reads, and posts to one's own website and the NYRB website. That way, everyone can read whatever, in whatever order, and still share the experience.

Trish, love your idea. There were a couple NYRB Challenges done a while ago (I'll hunt down the URLs soon), but I think they are inactive now.

Do you think we should make a blog to post peoples reviews/reactions like Europa does? Or should we keep it to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and start a new discussion? Calling it the "NYRB Classics Challenge" or something of the sort?

Either way, I'll make a new discussion for an August book, and it seems pretty clear that The Summer Book is the choice. Agreed everyone? Any comments?

Nick

Anne (reachannereach) Agreed.

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Good. The NYRB Classics would be a good name for a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ thread at another point. Perhaps we should start with that to judge audience.

So, does everyone think we should do a "NYRB Classics Challenge" on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ or on a blog (like Europa did)?

If we did it on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ I could just start a new discussion thread, and people could comment on books as they please. All of our books should be in our bookshelf here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, though some are in "read", "currently reading", and "to-read" based on release date.

What do you think? I'd also be happy to set up a blog where people could post their reviews of NYRB Classic books.

Let me know,
Nick

i say it's a toss up where you put it. europa's looks good i think:

but it may be easier for us gr'er's to have it here, just an opinion

Marieke | 70 comments i think a space here is much more conducive to discussion...but blogs are cool, too.

message 23: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mdespres) I'd prefer to participate in a challenge here. I don't want yet another site to join and visit.

message 24: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) To tell the truth, there is quite a bit of blog management on the part of particiapants, so just as well.

message 25: by Declan (new)

Declan | 89 comments I'm very new as a member of goodreads and am only getting used to how it works, so my preference would be to continue discussions right here. Is there an exact date in August by which we should have The Summer Book read and begin the discussion?

New York Review Books | 212 comments Mod
Hi Declan,

Welcome to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ! Good question, I think we can discussing the book next week. I haven't started yet, but I'll be doing that this weekend. Obviously we shouldn't give away the story in the early discussions, but do want to talk about the whole book with plenty of time. Let's plan to have finished the book by August 15th, which I think is doable. Not going to be too strict on this however.

Also, I think we should probably move this to discussion to the August thread now.

Nick

Hi Nick,
Many thanks for your welcome. I would hope to have the book finished before the 15th which is, by coincidence, the date on which I will be hosting my local book club. We're reading The Master and Margarita.

Selena (selenacurrently) the best way to sell me on a book is to compare it to atonement! have to get that asap. :)
