This is the place to talk about editors and editing. I would love to get a discussion going about how much editing should cost, recommending good editors, are they needed and so on.

And I am. :-)

Editing rates vary widely and are usually proportionate to the quality of the editor. Some charge by the hour, others by the word. A freelancer will cost you less than going through a vanity press company, who simply hire the freelancers and tack on a cut for themselves.

To give you an idea of cost, one self-publishing imprint offers a basic proofreading service for $0.0175 per word with a minimum charge of $175.00. For example, my novel, Baby Jane, which has 99,876 words including title page and copyright information (yes, have these proofed as well!), would cost $1747.83 (plus any applicable taxes) to have proofed. I would charge about $750 for the same service (my rates can be found .)

Storyediting is more money. Some, like myself, charge less for the copyedit and more if you want a storyedit as well (I charge another 50%) while others will charge more for copyediting and then ask only another 10% or so for an additional storyedit. Keep in mind, though, that the depth of such an analysis will vary greatly, again, from editor to editor.

Also, remember that if you use a foreign service, taxes charged in foreign jurisdictions are not deductible, but if you are registered for your local tax (e.g., GST or HST in Canada, VAT in Europe) then you can deduct any similar tax charged to you by a local editor (all sales taxes are input-output taxes). That said, sales taxes are often not charged to foreign clients (every jurisdiction has its own rules); if you are not registered for sales tax then sometimes using a foreign editor may be less expensive. Before making a choice you need to consider convenience, rates and exchange rates, possible taxes, and the reputation of the editor.

ROFL - I saw that too, and although not an editor, I was dying to fix it!

Kris (marketing_gurl) | 4 comments I'm also an editor and have worked with many indies on GR. I charge by finished page count so most books are only a few hundred bucks. I probably should raise my rates but I enjoy it so much that I'm not really worried about the cash. Anyway, you can see my rates and references at:

Jenn Flynn-Shon (jennshon) | 15 comments Kris your rates look quite reasonable for the different packages you offer. I've saved your site and would like to connect with you for biz in 4-6 months when I've gotten my 2nd MS to the point where I know its ready for an editor!

Lee Burton (lsburton337) While I'm browsing the group, I might as well say that I operate an editing service to support myself in my own writing.

Feel free to stroll around. Have a nice day.

Caterpillar Reads | 1 comments Hello everyone,
I've just started offering editing services and would love if you could check me out!

Thanks!

Autumn Birt | 4 comments I have an editor I used on my first novel. They charged $145 for a "manuscript evaluation" in order to give a more accurate estimate of the editing costs. They ended up saying $500 (more) for the edits and that in general I'd done a good job (happy me!).

Well, I contacted them last week and asked if they could skip the $145 (as that is mainly for books they are also going to publish and promote) and just give me an estimate for the editing. They agreed, but just sent me an email that by the tone, says they don't really want to do the work all that much (at least it feels that way to me) and are asking for $750 (for a shorter book that I busted my but to make clean - and is compared to the first novel I gave them!).

Looking at some of the info above and on the site, $750 isn't unreasonable (though more than I was expecting). I just . . . feel odd about the tone of their email and think maybe I should look around. I know I'm not their traditional client (who are authors looking to have a hard copy book printed and marketed through their press) and sort of feel like I'm a trouble maker to them. Anyone have any opinions?

Hi Marie,

If I were you, I'd edit like crazy to see if I could reduce the word amount. If not, consider making it two novels and maybe hire someone to so a plot analysis to get suggestions on things to cut or that needs work. This type of review *can* be cheaper than a proof-edit. Some of the links above or great and I found some other editors by searching FB for editors or Twitter for #editing. Good luck! You sound like a very busy writer. :)

Hi Marie,

The editing cycle is so frustrating. I have a great editor who works really quickly but is so incredibly sharp. Let me know if you are still looking and I can pass his name along.

Hey Autumn sounds like they are more interested in money than in doing the work. I have a great editor. He works quickly, but he catches EVERYTHING! Let me know if you need his contact.

No one. NO ONE catches "everything". Outside of Zondervan bibles, I've NEVER read a book, including those from big NY houses, that didn't have at least one error in it (usually two - five).

If an editor can get the error count below 10 per 100,000 words with no major messes, it's "good". Below 5 errors, it's "good enough". Down to one or two, it's "great".

message 21: by Anglina (last edited Feb 27, 2016 12:39AM) (new)

Anglina Argabright | 1 comments I am an editor offering services.

My name is Angelina, and I am 'starting' as a freelance proofreader under my real name. I have previously helped several indie authors, but I used a pen name to do so. I do not want to reveal my real name to the world. This means I will have to begin as if I have no previous satisfied clients (even though I technically do). Because of this, I am offering to proofread your manuscript for $.004 per word. This is a limited time deal. The low price will last until I have a few satisfied customers that will attest to my good work. After which I will increase my price to $.007 per word.

Proofreading includes more than checking spelling and grammar. It is a thorough cover to cover look at everything. This includes inconsistencies in your timeline, character development, and plot. I will also provide ideas on how to fix the holes in your story. I will point out 'filler' content that should be removed due to its uselessness. Plus, I will look for tense consistency.

I will carefully read through (a printed copy) of your book and send the marked up copy back to you within two weeks of the day I began reading it. If you can't send me a printed copy then you will have to give me permission to print one out myself (I do this from home with my own printer. There is a slight fee.) If you sent me a printed copy by mail I will send it back by USPS mail. If would rather be emailed the edited file then I will email a scanned copy to you.

I read fantasy, romance, dystopian, contemporary, middle-grade, young adult, pretty much all fiction. Just message me and I will most like end up accepting it. However, I do not read erotica. (Sorry!) Some sex in a book is fine, but every chapter is just too much for me.

You can contact me via private message here or email me at [email protected]

Sonnet Fitzgerald (sonnetfitzgerald) | 12 comments Hi there!

I'm Sonnet, a member of this group, and an editor. I offer developmental / content editing as well as proofreading. .

I'm not just here to shill my services though - I love working with authors. I love seeing the creativity and craft that goes into each manuscript! I love the process, too: it's such a joy when a book finally makes it to market.

All of which is to say, if you have any question about editing or the process or anything else, please feel free to contact me. I'd love to help!
