Snow: (view spoiler) right?
THG was also my first Dystopian book. I've compared it to others I've read (like Divergent, Across the Universe, Blood Red Road, Wither, etc) and it's still my favorite.
I liked the sequel more... But most people loved the first book way more than the second and third.
I think I need to re-read Mockingjay. I skipped a lot of parts just to get to that wonderful ending! (:

That was funny we'll definitely talk about that once we get to that book.
Are you being sarcastic about the happy ending because that's when I cried the most.

I really enjoyed the series, it was nice and intense (hah) and one of those series that you can just sit down and read and be lost in the world the author created.
Even my best friend (who's a guy) loves the series, he read it first and insisted i get into it. And i did.
Crystal, my friend also favored Gale. And even more so now when they announced the actor that will be playing him (who is absolutely gorgeous). But i always thought that Gale and Katniss were too much alike. Peeta had the type of personality that could take care of her and really give her a life of peace and friendship, while Gale was someone who would only fuel her fire. I love them both equally, but i also think that Peeta was more desercing. He plan to die for her on more than one occassion.
Tahlia, i understand where you're coming from. I think authors like to scare us into what the world could be, so that we'll take the actions to prevent it from ever happening. Not necessarily in this case, but it definitely warns us of what could be the future. But love conquers all once again, you know?

What made this book important for me is its contribution to my friends' literary education. THG paved the way for discussions and quite a debate among my friends and that to me signifies a "great book" because my friends are so not the bookworm types and them liking THG is a huge miracle in itself.
And we are all excited about the movie, too. I might even give away tickets to the screening. Who knows? :)

I tried to imagine it in the ruins of where they said they roughly were in the book. I imagined District 12 around Georgia because that's where the book said it roughly was, and I live there so it wasn't hard.

The beginning was kinda slow for me but got faster when (view spoiler) . I loved the action and it was sooo emotional and you can really connect well with Katniss and what she had to go through.
Personally, I did think Gale and Katniss are better off together in the first book because he was much more stronger and they both shared something in common.

after this book, katniss became my hero, and i practically fell in love with peeta, not sure what i think of gale though...didn't like the last two books as much as the first...katniss got too weepy

At the beginning of the book, I honestly thought Gale was some sixty-year-old neighbor or something.

At the beginning of the..."
really? i think she mentions him going 2 school with her or something.... anyway cant wait to read the next book!

That too, and the romance, the dramatic relationship Katniss and Peeta have <3 Peeta all the way..

I just finished the last book, and I loved all three. Katniss is a perfect example of someone raised in a society where you constantly fear for your life and when she makes it through the first and then second hunger games, you see what post traumatic stress does to a person--the same type of reaction soldiers have after enduring combat situations.
In book three, I was slightly put off by the way that katniss "checks out", but it is not uncommon for trauma victims to have these sorts of moments.
As for Gale and Peeta:
I loved Gale because he was a strong supporting character for Katniss, but you start to see from book one that he has his own ambitions (by his talk of rebellion and etc) and that Katniss and him don't agree often on these issues. Gale undoubtedly loves Katniss, but where he has ambitions outside of their relationship, Peeta only has one ambition: to love and to protect Katniss.
I am in love with Peeta. I am not sure a character that "good" could exist outside of fiction, and he is one of the most self-sacrficing characters ever written. Who would not want a man who would sacrifice everything for you, even his life. I wish Katniss had spent more time realizing this by the second book, but I do understand her turmoil. And book three ended exactly on a note that wraps the story up emotionally and the way you think it should.
I will say this too: The Hunger games made me fall in love with the good boy (Peeta) where usually I find myself attracted to the bad boy. :)

Me either... I tried so hard but could not get past the fifth chapter.

Mychele, try again to make it passed that fifth chapter! Lol, it will be worth it. I know the author's writing is so descriptive that it sometimes seems too much and maybe to some can become a little boring, but the actual story she tells is amazing! You won't be disappointed if you force your way through it :)

Ok Melanie lol I'm doing this for you... I have the audiobooks now so hopefully I can get through it better :-)

Gasp! How...?! It's dark element is one of the best parts of this series.

Sorry Anasisla but this discussion is just about the first book. Can you edit your comment to adjust it? We'll be talking about Mockingjay in April.

The Hunger Games was my first dystopian book so when I read it, it was like a breath of fresh air from the sea of vampire books I was in (not that they weren't great). Although, because it was my first dystopia book, I don't have much to compare it to.
My first thought when I finished the Hunger Games was, "Oh my gosh! Suzanne Collins is brilliant!" Katniss's situation was so depressingly sad. My heart went out to her, Peeta and almost everyone else in all the other districts (except those captial snobs).
I personally thought Gale was a better fit for Katniss when I read this book. I loved Peeta and he is obviously going to end up with her. That's just the way these books go, but I guess it was hard to imagine her with sensitive Peeta especially when I kept imagining myself with him.
All the characters were so 3-dimensional. Well except for the people in the captial who really saw the games as a sport. They were all just shallow.
Did anyone else develop this deep hatred for President Snow? I did. The way he just messes with these lives just to show he can really pissed me off. Because of him and all of the gamekeepers, Katniss couldn't let herself feel anything real because they would just use her feelings against her, and that was made so much worse because Peeta always showed how he really felt about her.
I'm really excited about the movie coming out. What about you guys?
