What did you think of The Hunger Games?
The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games was my first dystopian book so when I read it, it was like a breath of fresh air from the sea of vampire books I was in (not that they weren't great). Although, because it was my first dystopia book, I don't have much to compare it to.

My first thought when I finished the Hunger Games was, "Oh my gosh! Suzanne Collins is brilliant!" Katniss's situation was so depressingly sad. My heart went out to her, Peeta and almost everyone else in all the other districts (except those captial snobs).

I personally thought Gale was a better fit for Katniss when I read this book. I loved Peeta and he is obviously going to end up with her. That's just the way these books go, but I guess it was hard to imagine her with sensitive Peeta especially when I kept imagining myself with him.

All the characters were so 3-dimensional. Well except for the people in the captial who really saw the games as a sport. They were all just shallow.

Did anyone else develop this deep hatred for President Snow? I did. The way he just messes with these lives just to show he can really pissed me off. Because of him and all of the gamekeepers, Katniss couldn't let herself feel anything real because they would just use her feelings against her, and that was made so much worse because Peeta always showed how he really felt about her.

I'm really excited about the movie coming out. What about you guys?

aimee (aimeecanread) (aimeecanread) I want to see the movie too! But I'm a little bit afraid to, because usually the movie messes up the book.

Snow: (view spoiler) right?

THG was also my first Dystopian book. I've compared it to others I've read (like Divergent, Across the Universe, Blood Red Road, Wither, etc) and it's still my favorite.

I liked the sequel more... But most people loved the first book way more than the second and third.

I think I need to re-read Mockingjay. I skipped a lot of parts just to get to that wonderful ending! (:

That was funny we'll definitely talk about that once we get to that book.

Are you being sarcastic about the happy ending because that's when I cried the most.

Tahlia Newland (tahlian) | 2 comments This is one of those books that I think is excellent but I didn't like it. I can appreciate a great book even if it isn't to my taste. I found the world too brutal for me. It's not somewhere I wanted to be but the characters, story, political parallels were all really well done. It deserves the credit it gets, but I couldn't read to the end of the series, the world was just too horrible. Maybe I'm a wimp.

Shelbie (shelbielauren) | 2 comments Hey everyone! :)
I really enjoyed the series, it was nice and intense (hah) and one of those series that you can just sit down and read and be lost in the world the author created.
Even my best friend (who's a guy) loves the series, he read it first and insisted i get into it. And i did.
Crystal, my friend also favored Gale. And even more so now when they announced the actor that will be playing him (who is absolutely gorgeous). But i always thought that Gale and Katniss were too much alike. Peeta had the type of personality that could take care of her and really give her a life of peace and friendship, while Gale was someone who would only fuel her fire. I love them both equally, but i also think that Peeta was more desercing. He plan to die for her on more than one occassion.
Tahlia, i understand where you're coming from. I think authors like to scare us into what the world could be, so that we'll take the actions to prevent it from ever happening. Not necessarily in this case, but it definitely warns us of what could be the future. But love conquers all once again, you know?

Bryna Butler (Brynabutler) | 1 comments This was my first dystopian novel as well. I never thought I would like that genre, so I stayed away from HG for a long time even though my friends begged me to read it. I loved it. Gotta ask...did any of you try to place the districts in today's world? I ask because I kept imagining that District 12 was in what now is coal mining West Virginia which isn't very far from where I live, so it really struck a chord with me.

Soumi (soumiroy) | 3 comments The Hunger games was my first dystopian novel and it made me fall in love with dystopian and post apocalyptic novel. first of all, the hunger games is definitely best book in this whole series, i like Katniss's character in this book who is an independent and strong girl. i love Peeta, i mean this type of guys are really rare today, i wish i had a boy friend like him, i would never let him go. Catching fire was the base of mocking jay full of twist and turns, love triangle and surprises. the plot of revolution was planned in catching fire but i'm disappointed with mocking jay which could have been much more full of action from the rebels. i also didn't like how Katniss became so overwhelmed by her emotion and fragile. there was lack of romance in mocking jay, i mean when Peeta came back from capitol, Katniss could have paid more attention to him, Gale as a character developed himself and stayed always by Katniss's side. Though mocking had a slow start it has a very nice and emotional ending, almost made me cry.

Mauie (The Traveling Reader) (thetravelingreader) | 7 comments Like everyone else who has commented, The Hunger Games is also my first dystopian novel (although not the first S. Collins' book I've read since I was already a fan of Gregor the Overlander). The writing is excellent and I can just rave on and on about it. The characters were well drawn except the romance part (I still think that Katniss is not that in love with Peeta but she just couldn't help choosing him over Gale).
What made this book important for me is its contribution to my friends' literary education. THG paved the way for discussions and quite a debate among my friends and that to me signifies a "great book" because my friends are so not the bookworm types and them liking THG is a huge miracle in itself.

And we are all excited about the movie, too. I might even give away tickets to the screening. Who knows? :)

I tried to imagine it in the ruins of where they said they roughly were in the book. I imagined District 12 around Georgia because that's where the book said it roughly was, and I live there so it wasn't hard.

Erika | 4 comments I loved the Hunger Games so much. I also really hated President Snow. I could just smell him. Ughh.

Rebecca | 41 comments I didnt think that this book was very great, it was good ya but not to the extent everyone said. I only read the first one though so maybe the series really is as great as everyone said

May | 16 comments I really loved this book it was amazing katness had a lot of good qualitites that you don't see in today's books she is brave, loyal, honest, loves peeta and gale deeply, kind and has dignity althoughI was very dissappointed at the end of the series cause katness went against all of her good qualities

C.C. | 29 comments Although a lot of readers were disappointed with the ending of the series, I think its still a good book. There is romance but the for me the main focus of the story is hope and rebuilding lives, from total destruction.

Bonny mahajan | 1 comments good book, liked katniss
not sure of team gabe or peeta
i luved prim
although feel bad for peeta

Nikole (nikolek) | 1 comments I loved this book. It was good and full of excitement.

Dana (dana-lisa) I loved this book! The writing was amazing and the romance between Peeta and Katniss was great. It keeps you off your seat and it will not disappoint. The whole series was amazing. Definitely read it, its worth it.

Amalia | 4 comments The Hunger Games was also the first dystopian novel I got into. I didn't have any high expectations before reading it so I was glad that it didn't disappoint me when I got towards the ending! The first book was definitely my favourite in the trilogy.

The beginning was kinda slow for me but got faster when (view spoiler). I loved the action and it was sooo emotional and you can really connect well with Katniss and what she had to go through.

Personally, I did think Gale and Katniss are better off together in the first book because he was much more stronger and they both shared something in common.

Nat (Nat_Hamilton) | 10 comments LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the hunger game series :)
after this book, katniss became my hero, and i practically fell in love with peeta, not sure what i think of gale though...didn't like the last two books as much as the first...katniss got too weepy

Cherry | 3 comments I Really love this book! at first I dont like it, then when I heard that it has an upcoming movie, I got curious, and now I can't even drop my e-reader! right now im on the middle of the second part of the series and i completely hate President Snow. anyway I can't wait for the movie.

Juliett (msbookqueen) | 1 comments Such a great book series! Not too sure about the movies it looks like it will be "PG'd" up. The trailer looked cool though.

At the beginning of the book, I honestly thought Gale was some sixty-year-old neighbor or something.

It's perfection :)

Kinga (xzellaz) | 5 comments It's one of those books that won't be forgotten over time because it has that essence that a great book needs! I think I will reread it every year, especially the highlighted pages I so carefully noted on a paper.
That too, and the romance, the dramatic relationship Katniss and Peeta have <3 Peeta all the way..

Dana (dana-lisa) BEST BOOK SERIES EVERRR WRITTEN! sorry for the caps lock rage... i just love and is so passionate about this series. :)

message 29: by R.K. (new) - rated it 4 stars

R.K. Ryals | 4 comments This series was amazing. Brutal, intense, but amazing. Sadly, it isn't that far-fetched. If a nation fell and became ruled by a dictator who wanted to keep an iron fist on his nation, what's the best way to do this--threaten the children.

I just finished the last book, and I loved all three. Katniss is a perfect example of someone raised in a society where you constantly fear for your life and when she makes it through the first and then second hunger games, you see what post traumatic stress does to a person--the same type of reaction soldiers have after enduring combat situations.

In book three, I was slightly put off by the way that katniss "checks out", but it is not uncommon for trauma victims to have these sorts of moments.

As for Gale and Peeta:

I loved Gale because he was a strong supporting character for Katniss, but you start to see from book one that he has his own ambitions (by his talk of rebellion and etc) and that Katniss and him don't agree often on these issues. Gale undoubtedly loves Katniss, but where he has ambitions outside of their relationship, Peeta only has one ambition: to love and to protect Katniss.

I am in love with Peeta. I am not sure a character that "good" could exist outside of fiction, and he is one of the most self-sacrficing characters ever written. Who would not want a man who would sacrifice everything for you, even his life. I wish Katniss had spent more time realizing this by the second book, but I do understand her turmoil. And book three ended exactly on a note that wraps the story up emotionally and the way you think it should.

I will say this too: The Hunger games made me fall in love with the good boy (Peeta) where usually I find myself attracted to the bad boy. :)

Me either... I tried so hard but could not get past the fifth chapter.

Melanie Just finished this series! Definitely worth the read, and very excited about the movie coming out now!!

Mychele, try again to make it passed that fifth chapter! Lol, it will be worth it. I know the author's writing is so descriptive that it sometimes seems too much and maybe to some can become a little boring, but the actual story she tells is amazing! You won't be disappointed if you force your way through it :)

Sage (theoriginal) | 5 comments I kept meaning to read this series but never had the time to go out and buy them, until I received a kindle for my birthday. I bought the first then the second and third at the same time when i finished the first. this was an amazing break to school forced books and vampires and werewolves. I felt a connection with the characters as they went through their hardships and stress, it kinda stressed me out even... good thing i had three days to finish these or i wouldn't have been able to get ANYTHING done at school. I have to say i was a little irritated with both Gale and Peeta at different times in the novels but i didn't really have a preference for who she ended up with. I was actually a little sad when i finished the series because of how involved with it i had become! I am very glad there is going to be a movie. :) I definitely HATE President Snow, but i think one of my favorite comic relief characters would have to be the wonderfully charming Buttercup. ;) He cracked me up. :)

C.C. | 29 comments I read the series because it was recommended by a lot of goodreaders. I have to admit at first I was skeptical but as the story progress I got hooked. I was blown away by the story. It was not the usual happy ending... This is one of the best YA books, action packed

Siobhan | 3 comments I was skeptical at first because I thought the arena would involve gladiator-style fights to the death until one was left, so naturally I thought "hmm not really my thing..." but once it was explained to me that is not at all what happens I picked up a copy, shortly before Catching Fire came out, and I have been in love with the series ever since.

Paige Austin One word depressing..
I didn't like it at all I mean the story lines good but just didn't do it for me.

Gasp! How...?! It's dark element is one of the best parts of this series.

Ashley (twinmomstl) I absolutely loved the first two boks but found myself hating the last book. Any one else feel that way? I have a love/hate relationship with the ending.

Ana (addictedtochocochoco) I fell in love at the first book and the second book was great, but yeah, the third book knocked me far away from it. The ending seemed way too rushed for me to agree with. And I love Prim. Why did she have to die?! D:

Sorry Anasisla but this discussion is just about the first book. Can you edit your comment to adjust it? We'll be talking about Mockingjay in April.
