Dracula
question
Vampires

I am on the hunt for a four or five star vampire book; absent of ooey gooey love stuff, heavy with action and lust. (In other words, I do not want anything along the lines of Twilight or True Blood tv series.) I have not read Dracula by Bram Stoker. Any recommendations for some fiction depicting the true merciless and seductive nature of vampires?

dracula is the best vampire story ever. Twilight will never top it (btw stephanie meyers, vampires dont sparkle)
I have yet to read them as of yet but I have heard Anne Rice's vampire cronicals is amazing, I heard its more like to Bram Stoker then Stephine Meyers vampires, maybe you have already read them or heard of them, I know i cant wait to read them
Dracula is the classic on which all others are based, for the most part. I think it's worth reading.
Another great one in the vampire genre is "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova.

I just finished reading Dracula last week, and I was disappointed. I would not recommend it for what it sounds like you want...though it's not any of that sappy love story stuff, it's also definitely not action packed. It's a slow read full of journal entries. I think it would have been better with about half of it cut out. Read it if you like classics, but not if you're looking for something thrilling and fast-paced.
For anyone who's interested in Vampire fiction, Dracula is a must read classic...it's where it all began. However it is a very different read from Interview with a Vampire. I HIGHLY recommend you read Interview with a Vampire next as it has everything you're looking for and then read Dracula later.
I finally read Dracula last year and was surprised that it wasn't scary. There were a couple of scenes that were bloody, but the build up in the narrative gives the reader plenty of time to figure out what's coming. I liked the book very much because of the detail of the time period, customs, etc. Most of the scary parts were subtle -- more innuendo than outright scare tactics.
You might try Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin. It's being rereleased, but it was originally published in the early 80's. A great vampire hero, a truly nasty vampire villain, and set aboard a Mississippi riverboat in the 1880s.

I'd recommend the Nathaniel Cade series by Christopher Farnsworth.
The first book, Blood Oath, is a great thriller with a kickass vampire, and without romance.
I never cared about vampire books (mainly because of the mainstream vampire image in my mind), but then I read the Cade series and now I'm looking for more books in the true (non-sparky, non-highschool-romance) vampire genre, too.

I just finished The Historian. It was excellent. Lots of mystery, not much love or angst. It's a big book, but completely worth the time, in my opinion...
I didn't read the whole book but I don't think their is a seductive part on the book.
I didn't read everyone's recommendations, but do agree with some who say "The Historian". I loved it! I'm not sure you will get the same out of it as someone who has read Dracula, but definitely give it a shot.
Anyone reading The Strain series? I'm in the third one and have greatly enjoyed them. Definitely no lovey-dovey story here! Lots of blood and gore and other vampirey things.

Interesting... the notion of vampire and lust vs vampire and romance... how about the basic historical form of vampire? Monster. For hundreds of years the vampire existed as a monster, who preyed upon men, women, and children alike, for food. Suddenly everyone is taking the subtextual eroticism of the idea and making it more than textual - it's now the paradigm.
The vampire is a parasite, not a "rough" date.

Dracula is not actually a horror story or a love story... for easy reading for pleasure this is the wrong book. It is not a difficult read, but by no means the sensational, fear driven, and intoxicating plot that drives the present vampire craze.
I really liked Let the Right One In which is not a love story really at all.
A Discovery of Witches had a slight love story, but not really sappy like Twilight crap. Much more adult. And yes it is about vampires and witches.
I have had The Passage in my TBR pile for a long time and just haven't gotten around to it yet. I've heard good things though. The sequel is out now, so maybe I'll get to read both together. Procrastination at it's finest! :)

"The Vampire" by Polidori! Short but definetely on the line with what you are looking for.
"Transilvania Hotel" By Yarbro! There is a little love story but it is full of charm and action.

The Historian is also a good vampire story. A friend of mine took a vampire lit class a year ago and had to read: Sunshine, Penguin Book of Vampire Stories, The Historian, and The Vampire Tapestry. I can only vouch for the Historian, but she said she liked all the books.

I've heard good things about Rhiannon Frater's, Pretty When she Dies.
The Necroscope series by Brian Lumley is very good. The vampires within these books are true monsters.
I have read Dracula, Rice's vampire series, and Salem's Lot. All three are excellent. I also have Carmilla on my to-read list.
try Verland: The Transformation by B.E. Scully that's my recommendation.I really enjoyed that one.
Anne Rice and Bram Stoker are a Must for any vampire fan.

You could try Salem's Lot by Stephen King, it has a lot of scare and action.
Interview With a Vampire by Anne Rice is probably the best of the lot, except for maybe The Historian, which is a beautifully constructed novel.
Carmilla by Joseph Sheridon Le Fanu. It's definitely a classic in the genre, and pre-dates Dracula. I love it.
Dracula is based on Nosferatu according to some people. It definitely came after and had many of the same elements.
Another non-love story about vampires is Salem's Lot, which IS based on Dracula, according to the author. I have not read Anne Rice, but I've heard good things.

I can assure you that love is not the core of the story. The story is somehow similar to the stories of Sherlock Holmes, only that there are factors which can frighten you.
There is also a manga series named "Hellsing", where they talk about events happened after Bram Stoker's Dracula (plus they related him with Vlad Tepes in a part of the manga). Love is not so relevant, there is a lot of gore and action.

Definitely read Dracula. Then, read Anno Dracula. It's a book where Dracula won at the end of Dracula (it's got real people and fictional people in it. So far I'm enjoying it).
I read Dracula and it's really more about other things than lovestorys. But still there are some.
