At the moment I am reading L J Smith, Vampire Diaries Series, 5 Books Collection The Awakening, The Fury, Nightfall, Shadow Souls, the Return Midnight by L.J. Smith

I am actually reading Vampire Diaries, The Return Midnight, I don't why it shows them as a set as I bought them separately from Amazon.

I'm really enjoying this book, I think the series is coming to an end soon, I'm shocked that she managed to get so many different types of "powers" into these books even things I know are impossible. I can't help but love L.J.Smith she just always get's it right for me. Although I did read a spoiler accidentally by e-mail thank you Shelf Awareness grrr

Well I just read White is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi I have to say I enjoyed it but I did find it hard going at times, the fact I had others to read with and discuss this book made me want to finish it. There are a lot of inconsistencies and unexplained parts which annoyed me a little. I don't like things left to my imagination or I would write the books myself. So what do I read now? I got Grave Sight (Harper Connelly, #1) by Charlaine Harris and An Ice Cold Grave (Harper Connelly, #3) by Charlaine Harris from morrisons for £1.99 which are the 1st and 3rd books of the series. Think I should probably saves these until after I get my copy of Phantom (The Vampire Diaries The Hunters, #1) by L.J. Smith after it's released just in case I get too into them. If ROOM doesn't get into the polls I think I will read that next.

I just finished The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (Twilight, #3.5) by Stephenie Meyer This morning I was excited because my Phantom (The Vampire Diaries The Hunters, #1) by L.J. Smith and Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen arrived :D Vampire Diaries was a day early and was due to be released tomorrow. Don't know what to read next :O

If Water for Elephants doesn't make it this month I'm going to try to set up a mini group read - it's really highly rated and I'm tired of waiting.

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
That's brilliant Kirsty I'd definitely be up for that!

I got The Memory Box by Margaret Forster The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi and The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman from the library, to see what all the fuss is about Gaiman hehe.

I love Neil Gaiman. You might want to try Stardust by Neil Gaiman , if you're interested in his adult fiction. It's pretty short, and makes for a fabulous introduction. If you like fantasy-tinged/books with a romance plot, you might like Vaclav and Lena by Haley Tanner We have a fair few books in common, and I absolutely loved it -- literally couldn't put it down. Might be worth a try :)

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Will look them up Sarah, thank you *smile* Is stardust the same as the film of the same name?

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (scheherazade) | 364 comments Mod
I've not seen the film yet lol I have it on DVD, but I've just never got around to watching it.

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
It was quite a good film I thought, we enjoyed it but the boys watched it too. Maybe the tamed it a little for the film.

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Ok so I just read The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Now I see what all the fuss was about, It took me a little bit to get into but I always find that with a new Author anyway. So this book was amazing! I was amazed, shocked, even a little scared but also proud and emotional towards the end. I have to admit I cried at the end *hides* The only question I really have is what was Bod's real name?

I love how each chapter is a different story but still within the main characters life, easy to read little bits if you don't have much time. Very easy to get back into and actually feel like you're a part of it.

Bring on December reads hope Anansi Boys measures up ;)

On to the next think I better read The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes since Kat very kindly sent it to me. If anyone wants it after I've finished let me know...

That sounds like a good recommendation for the Graveyard Book *adds to list*

I've heard Stardust was amended for the film, but haven't read the book either.

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Oh it's brilliant Jo, definitely one I would recommend to anyone but especially to people who haven't read any Gaiman books yet, it pulled me in like a vacuum and I devoured it :) Think I will put Stardust on my to read list as I'm intrigued how it compares with the film.

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes Was not at all what I was expecting, but I did thoroughly enjoy it. It kept me gripped to the point where I was so desperate to find out the ending I just couldn't put it down, I think I read it in a day, but everyone seems to have read it at the beginning of the month so it seems a bit weird to drag it up now. All in all not a book that I would keep to re-read, but a very interesting story with fabulous twists an turns that I would recommend to anyone.

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I started to read The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi the other day and I've found it a great struggle to get into as with WifW I gave up in the end and have started to read The Memory Box by Margaret Forster This is a lot more interesting and pulling me in straight away, If I have time I will try and read The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi again before it has to be back at the library on the 2nd :S

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I didn't get time to read The Icarus Girl in the end, hopefully I will be able to try it again at some point. The Memory Box had a really good start and pulled me right in, in the middle it dipped a little although I like a bit of emotion in my books it was a little to centered around it for my me, but I did enjoy it so I think I gave it 3 stars. I am trying to be more critical than when I first started here as I only read things I knew I would enjoy. I'm very loyal to my favourite authors so they easily get high marks but I think I need to think is this really as good as the last... I don't know I'm rambling so tired... *Yawn*

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Next was Room by Emma Donoghue Can't believe I haven't written about it yet :O I absolutely loved it and would definitely recommend it to anyone. It was very strange to see such a situation through a 5 year olds eyes, but I've looked at my kids in a very different way since reading as I've realised they are not as grown up as I thought they were at 9 and 6.

I have since started Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen but I am really struggling to find time for it :( It is rather engaging when you do pick it up the and the imagery is very good, I just need more hours in a day! lol

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Absolutely Amina! You would think I would have all the time in the world with being a stay at home mum, sadly this is not the case...

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
So I finished Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen I loved it, wish I had read it in one sitting as I thought it would have I could hear sounds and smell the smells of the Circus, I am not at all surprised they made a movie out of it. I am now onto Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman 60% through and loving every minute I love how Gaiman makes a story that you can put down if you must but when you return it's like you never left. Amazing I'm so glad I followed all you ladies and read one of his books now I'm hooked ;) For Christmas I got 9 books 3 were from my Secret Santa The Sealed Letter by Emma Donoghue Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde with the merry men and other stories, also Jamrach's Menagerie by Carol Birch Can not to wait to get stuck into these... Also got the first three of Origins (The Vampire Diaries Stefan's Diaries, #1) by L.J. Smith really need some Stefan/Damon fixes at the mo ;) and last but not least... Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith Sister by Rosamund Lupton The Hollow by Jessica Verday With thanks to my lovely Mum and Brother :) Yay! for Christmas books :D

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Oooh and treated myself to The Sookie Stackhouse Companion A Complete Guide to the True Blood Mystery Series by Charlaine Harris yesterday as it was quite cheap on amazon and I had a gift certificate whoop whoop! Also got my The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall and The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón on their way to me... 2012 is gonna be a book filled year :D

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I read a little bit of Origins (The Vampire Diaries Stefan's Diaries, #1) by L.J. Smith but I found it was more like the series than the books I've read, so put it down for a while so I can forget Phantom a little before I read them.

Read a little bit of The Sookie Stackhouse Companion A Complete Guide to the True Blood Mystery Series by Charlaine Harris I got into to it way to easily for my liking so I've put it down until I've finished my monthly books and read a Stephen King book for my personal challenge.

Next I read The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall I cannot stress enough how much I loved this book, it was amazing, the story was so original and Stephen Hall is such a fabulous story teller that I just drank it all in and didn't want it to end. Everyone should read this book!

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Now I'm reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón I am just over half way through but panicking that I won't be able to stick to my targets as I still have Florence and Giles and The Turn of the Screw by John Harding and Cell by Stephen King to read and I haven't even started my TBR challenge yet :S I've decided to just go with the flow and stop worrying, because reading is about enjoying the stories right? So that's what I'm going to do even if I don't meet my targets I'm just going to enjoy my reading time.

Thank you lovely ladies :) I went to the library with my eldest today to pick up Florence and Giles by John Harding and found a brand new copy of Animal Farm by George Orwell so I loaned that too. I really don't do myself any favours do I? lol it's only 90 odd pages though so shouldn't take too long. It's on my TBR list so part of my challenges :) bring on the polls tomorrow, I have Amazon vouchers and I'm not afraid to use them hehe. x

Would you recommend The Sookie Stackhouse Companion A Complete Guide to the True Blood Mystery Series by Charlaine Harris , Sam? I've been toying with the idea of getting it for a while, but I just can't decide.

I have been actively trying not to read it. Quite easy at the moment as I have so much on with books of the month and challenges gaaah! I will say I was probably more impressed than I probably should be that it has some of the recipes in for the food they talk about. Iced tea for example and also Caroline Bellefleur's Chocolate Cake I think, and it has a little map that shows where everyone lives, it doesn't show Fangtasia for some reason(maybe I missed it) The first story I started reading was about Sookie going to Sam's Brothers or Sisters wedding sorry can't remember which. I am a rather big fan though It's quite embarrassing hehe. So yes I would if you would like to know those kinds of things ;) x

I've always been slightly suspicious of companion-style books, since I read Bev Vincent's The Road to the Dark Tower and wasn't at all impressed. This one sounds more interesting, though. I might give it a go, thank you :)

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
If you want me to take some pictures of the inside I can do? This was written and promoted by Charlaine Harris so I don't know, what is the road to the dark tower about? Is it those series of Stephen King books?

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
The other day I ordered some books from Amazon, Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely, #1) by Melissa Marr recommended by Kirsty. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon - Which I have seen around lots and found more intriguing when I realised it was about a teenager with Aspergers (my brother has this) Desperation by Stephen King - which was listed as a hardback and in like new condition- It is not either LOL so I complained and they have promised to refund me so I got a free book but I will have to gift it as it's one I wanted to look pretty on my bookshelf which the hubby is finishing tonight. Yay!! Also picked up Life of Pi by Yann Martel in the charity shop yesterday for 60p :D

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I liked F&G but was upset at the ending still trying to get over it lol. I also ordered some bits from the book depository in the sale they had special offers every hour I got I am Legend by Richard Matheson but in a bright yellow HB £3.55 and Blood Sinister by Celia Rees £1.70 bargains also got The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks this week and now I want to read it so bad! Also wanting to read The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey The naughty temptress that is Kirsty posted a code for this on the March nominations and when I looked it up I just couldn't resist. It arrived yesterday but was damaged so I got a replacement copy this morning, I cannot stress how beautiful this hardback is, no dust cover just a beautiful book. (Makes me want to put rubber gloves on before I read it! :O )

I am currently reading Animal Farm by George Orwell it is quite slow going, but interesting all the same :)

I thought it looked lovely and with the code is a great price for a hardback but I joined the folio society resisted from buying it. Beautiful hardbacks are quite rare these days even Julian Barnes pointed it out so I'm hoping that more effort is starting to go into them in now that digital books are on the increase.

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I really hope so too, I'd much rather have shelves of pretty hardback books :)

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I also read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee I really enjoyed it and wish that I had read it sooner. I did find that I wanted more but I think that is the sign of a good book with interesting characters.

I just finished The Waiting Room by F.G. Cottam I was quite disappointed, I don't think I would recommend it which I find quite sad as it had the opportunity to be a really good story :(

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Wow I've really let this go :( I really enjoyed The Help by Kathryn Stockett I don't remember if there's anything in between that and The Bone People A Novel by Keri Hulme I'm so far behind I can't find a way back in :s I couldn't get on with The Bone People, I just couldn't handle the poetry. I need names I need to know who is who so after 13 pages I took it back to library, sorry guys I just wasn't up to that one. Started reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King It's really nice so far I'm enjoying it. I'm going to take my time and catch up as I can because when I feel pressured I just want to give up.

You should be able to enjoy what you're reading, so take your time :) 11.22.63 is an amazing book -- I absolutely loved it! I'm sooo looking forward to the new Dark Tower this week.

It's nice to see you back, anyway!

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Thanks Sarah, I want to start the dark tower series but I want the covers to match so i've put off buying them lol! I'm really looking forward to Deadlocked next month :D yay!

What did you think of the Stefan's Diaries series in the end, Sam? I'm not sure whether to bother with those, or just wait until November for Destiny Rising (The Vampire Diaries The Hunters, #3) by L.J. Smith .

I was disappointed to be honest Sarah, they are true to the tv series rather than the books. Depends really as in Stefan's diaries Katherine is dark haired, a lot of things were bugging me about it as I'd recently read Moonsong. I have put them down. I think I may read them after the vampire diaries series finishes and try to ignore the differences. If you can ignore them, I'd say go for it. x

I don't know...things like that annoy me. I might wait until after I've read Destiny Rising, and then try them alongside watching the TV series. They get really mixed reviews on Amazon, which is why I thought I'd ask you. We generally seem to be in accord on these things!

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Absolutely yeah! I would definitely says series companion not book companion ;) x

It irritated me that the TV series was so different from the books in the first place. I only watched the first series, while I was writing my dissertation. I've promised myself that I'll give it another chance once the book series ends, though :)
