I'm on page 160 of Covet by J. R. Ward. Pace is still sort of slow--which is not true in her BDB books. This may be because this is a new series and Ward has all sorts of background to establish. Hope that it picks up soon.

I'm on page 192 of Playing With Fire (Tales of an Extraordinary Girl, #1) by Gena Showalter Playing With Fire, Tales of an Exordinary Girl, Book 1. It is this month's first book of the month selection and it just looked too good to wait its place in line. Therefore, I bumped it up before three other books of the month that are in my to-be-read pile.

It is the story of a less than extraordinary young woman who suddenly finds herself with super powers. Adjusting to her new abilities and a hunky superhero are only a few of her problems. Easy read, humorous, fast-paced--so far, it's a keeper.

message 405: by Wendy T (new)

Wendy T I finished Eleven on Top by Janet Evanovich, Wishin' and Hopin' A Christmas Story by Wally Lamb, Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich and Megan's Way by Melissa Foster.

Now I'm listening to Lean Mean Thirteen by Janet Evanovich and reading The Surrogate A Novel by Judith Henry Wall

Colleen (colleenct1) | 1537 comments I have finished "Red Hot Lies" and I am now reading "Night Keepers" by Jessica Andersen. I am not one of the people that believe the end of the world is coming in 2012, but this book is a nice take on that idea.

I am planning on taking the same approach with Night Keepers. I am a diabetic, but I am not planning on a triple hot fudge sundae on December 21, 2012. On the other hand if Andersen can create an original imaginative story with the 2012 scenario, kudos to her.

Julia | 11782 comments I also am reading Playing with Fire, though I haven't yet read enough to form an opinion. This may be the first month I actually read the group read during the month we are discussing it! Playing With Fire (Tales of an Extraordinary Girl, #1) by Gena Showalter

message 410: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (colleenct1) | 1537 comments Yea Julia, I think I read the group read in the correct month just once.

I have finished "Night Keepers" I gave it 3 stars. I am now reading "The Second Virgin Birth" by Tommy Taylor. I am finding it very interesting.

I just completed the Love Inspired book, Jingle Bell Babies Jingle Bell Babies (Love Inspired) by Kathryn Springer by Kathryn Springer. I have to read a Christmas book at Christmas -- my own little tradition. I am also reading Can't Stand The Heat Can't Stand The Heat by Louisa Edwards by Louisa Edwards. So far this is an okay book, but I'm not wow'ed. I have only completed about half, so perhaps it will improve. Finally I am reading Mastering the Art of French Cooking Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child by Julia Child, Louisette Bertholle, and Simone Beck, which I received at Christmas.

Wendy T I'm finishing Virgin River by Robyn Carr tonight then will begin Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger.

Changed my mind on starting Her Fearful Symmetry. I'm going to start Bitten by Kelley Armstrong instead.

Karen, I loved Virgin River and look forward to reading the rest of the series. I have read Susan Wiggs and Debbie Macomber before, but not Sherryl Woods. I have to check her out this coming year. She can a new author for me.

Colleen (colleenct1) | 1537 comments I have finished "The Second Virgin Birth" and "The Lovely Bones" I liked both of them very much and would recommand them.

I am now reading "The Stand" by Stephen King for the 4th time. There is just something about this book, I just love it. Every time I read it I find characters that I had forgotton about. Reading this book is like having a conversation with an old friend. It is very comfortable.

message 419: by SamBFN (new)

SamBFN | 1857 comments Colleen . . are you reading the unabridged authour's version? If so, have you ever read the other and could you tell the difference other than the length?

This is my all time favorite SK novel. Everytime there is talk of a "flu epidemic" this always pops up in my mind.

The miniseries that starred Gary Sinese was quite a good adaptation of this too.

message 420: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (colleenct1) | 1537 comments I have read both books. I can tell that some parts are different. I liked the extra part about Fran's mother, she is very ugly in the unabridged version. LOL

I also like the added chapter of the people who survived the flu but were too stupid to live, Stephen King has a great sense of humor. I love this book but I would have to say that "Salmen's Lot" is my favorite book.

I did not see the miniseries, expect for "The Shinning" with Jack Nicholas. King's books usually don't come across good on any size screen.

message 421: by SamBFN (new)

SamBFN | 1857 comments I found "The Stand" and "It" which were both tv miniseries were both pretty good. If you get a chance to watch them they are worthwhile.

message 422: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Walton Grant (tamgrant) I'm reading Dracula for the first time since I was about 12 years old and finding it (surprisingly) entertaining. I got Dracula The Undead for my birthday last week so figured I should reread the original.

I just finished Voyager by Diana Gabaldon and "Plato and a Platypus walk into a bar" is on my nighstand.

I am a couple of chapters in to the new Stephen King, Under the Dome, but have to be in a certain mood to read his books (his style is so distinctive) and I'm not there yet.

message 423: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (colleenct1) | 1537 comments Tammy, I was speaking to someone on the bus yesterday that told me she was having a hard time getting into "Under the Dome" Please let me know what you think when you are done.

message 424: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Walton Grant (tamgrant) Colleen, I had trouble getting into it as well. I find some of King' books have a certain vibe that whispers "this is going to be VERY unpleasant" right from the get go. This book is one of them. The Stand had a similiar vibe for me but in a good way. Does this makes any sense?

I'm going to plow through a historical romance to "cleanse the palate" after Dracula then maybe try again.

message 425: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (colleenct1) | 1537 comments I know exactly what you mean. It is the creepy feeling that makes the hairs on your arm stick up while you are reading.

I have gone from the "superflu" to witches, I am now reading "The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane" The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe So far so good.

message 426: by Julia (new)

Julia | 11782 comments I read "The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane" this summer and quite enjoyed it. I read 15 or something books about Salem and its witch trials before a trip there.

I know what you mean about cleansing the palate. I often purposely read quite different books from the one I read previously. I haven't read King's new book, but it sure sounds different from The Physick Book...

message 427: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (colleenct1) | 1537 comments I have finished "The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane" and I also read "You Suck" by Christopher Moore. I am now reading the orginal "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. What a sad little story, nothing like the movie.

Sam, I agree completely ~ both were well adapted into TV mini-series.

I'm trying to remember all that I read in December. I actually went quite nuts the last week of December and first week of January and didn't stop reading, LOL! Seeing as how hubby hogged the internet connection, I had nothing better to do, LOL! I'll be back later with a list of all I read.

BDB Book 5, Vishous and Dr. Jane Whitcomb's story, is very interesting for several reason. I'm not going to say more because that would be a spoiler, but it will be interesting to read your reaction to this book. Many diehard BDB fans had problems with the ending. I would have preferred another ending, but wasn't as upset as others.

Gee, this is great news. I am only a month late. Woowho!!

Colleen (colleenct1) | 1537 comments Since the last time I came to this post I have finished reading "The Thirteenth Tale" I have also read Bel Canto, Conspiracy Game, Covet, and Still Life: A Novel. All of them turened out to be 4 star books. I have read some real good books in 2010.

I am now reading Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost. In my head she sounds like one of those old fashioned P.I.'s like Mike Hammer. I am enjoying the story so far.

Since Street Game, I started and finished:

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks (borrowed from my SIL ~ not bad, actually prefered the movie more),
Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward (BDB # 7) (and oh, Lord, help me! The next book is coming out in hardcover and I sooooo want John and Xhex's story!!!),
Take No Prisoners and Whisper No Lies by Cindy Gerard (Black Ops, #2 & 3)(very good, both of them!!!),
Nauti Boy by Lora Leigh (Nauti, #1 - very hot read!), and this morning I finished:
Evil Without a Face by Jordan Dane (Sweet Justice, #1). Pretty good. My mistake was reading the excerpt of #2 at the back of the book - now I can't wait to see if my local bookstore has it!!!

Started Rapture by Jacquelyn Frank (Shadowdwellers, #2). I'm only on page 45, but it's pretty good so far.

Well I read the first book whenever we had it as book of the month and then I realized I could download the other 3 from the library. Gotta love Overdrive when you finish a book in a series and want to read the next one you go online, download it and start reading it at 11pm at night. So sweet!!!

I enjoyed the Lone Star Sisters series. . .I wasn't fussy about the first book but enjoyed the remaining ones series more.
