There was a time when I wouldn't give up on books but since I've had kids I've accumulated quite a few books that I've read 1/3 of at most. My 12 + 3 list was turning into a list of books I've been distracted from or that just weren't right to captivate me at the time so I've made a list of them and in 2012 I'm going to finish them!

The life of Pi is meant to be an excellent read. I'm going to nominate The little friend for February - I can think of a few people would like it:)

I just hunted down a folio society copy of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez and took a bit of a leap of faith by buying it from someone on gumtree. They must have posted it straight away because it arrived this morning and it is one hefty book.

It's in great condition but one page later on must have got something on it at some point and it's pressed - not a big deal for me though:)

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Sounds lovely :) It's probably fixable if you lay it down spread the page out and put a heavy book on top. (You probably already know this but just thought I'd say) :) x

it's dried in and crusty lol

Oh dear lol! It's about the casing more than anything though I guess? I have never read it, is it any good? x

I started it in Taiwan but gave it back to the girl I borrowed it from because I didn't have the time to read it. Love in the Time of Cholera is one of my favourite books so it looks promising. It is a really big book and I think only 2 of the pages are marked which I don't mind - adds character;)

It looks like a lovely book. This one is on my To Read Challenge list too ... but I've not bought a copy yet. I'm hoping actually that it gets chosen when we vote on a South America read! :)

If it doesn't get chosen then lets pair up and read it. I think I might take some photos and add them - the photos really don't do any of the FS books any justice but the gold on this book is beautiful.

Yep if it doesn't get voted for when the time comes I'll happily read it with you.
Would love to see your pictures! :)

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly Now that's a book I won't forget in a hurry. I'm glad I persisted with it and I found that I had stopped reading just before the hook. It was really dark and twisty and quite complex in it's use of different stories and it reminded me of even more books and films than referenced by the author. It really was quite disturbing in the end.

Have you seen this Kirsty?

That's such a great offer. I have the second one ready to read on my kindle. Thanks for thinking of me. I was really tempted to place an order for a set of books on there last month - can't remember what they were exactly (I'll have to look them back up) x

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
It is, I am very tempted :) I haven't read the first yet though I really need to read it before Deadlocked (Sookie Stackhouse #12) by Charlaine Harris comes out in May :) x

I think you'd like it. Not heavy reading and it adds a nice dark twist to faeries. Are you going to read A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness ?

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Yeah, I think I will I bought it from Amazon when we were talking about it a while ago. I got A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness from the book people for £4.99 with free delivery I do love the HB's :) so I can't wait to get stuck into that, just need to finish The Waiting room and read The help and then A discovery of witches is next. :) x

The Help is one of my favourite books and is difficult to put down - prepare to take it everywhere with you x

If I can start it tonight, I could possibly finish it in a day. I'm really hoping I do enjoy it. The last few books I've read have taken me ages to get into :( x

I think it's rare for people not to like it and I'm pretty sure you'll love it. It's such a lovely read. I had to read it in so many bits because we were about to leave for Scotland. I really wanted to just sit and read the whole thing but I couldn't wait to finish it. Relax and take your time, enjoy it x

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I will, thank you :) x

I am really behind on this challenge but at least we're reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel next month. I've only read a few pages (less than 10 - maybe even about 3) and I was wondering why I put it on this list and not my other one.
I think this list will be the most difficult because for one reason or another I have started them but been distracted and I found I really had to push myself to finish the book I've read so far:(

Anyone read, or heard good things about, any of the books on this list? Any pageturners?

bookishbat (morgaine_cat) | 90 comments I 've read (and loved) A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka for me it was a quick read, it was quite funny and I have recommended it to others.
I haven't read any others from your list, I have Life of Pi by Yann Martel but I haven't picked it up so far, which is why I voted for it on book of the month.

I did give The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly to my friend as a christmas present, because she had it on her amazon wishlist. I read the first chapter/prologue before I wrapped it up and it did seem intriguing, I think I would either borrow it off her or buy it for myself at some point in the future. as far as I know she hasn't got around to reading it yet.

Funnily enough A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka is the one I picked up to finish today. It's the one I started most recently and I remembered it being funny. Thanks for the help - I'll finish The Bone People then start it again:)
