Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I'm listening to it but I'm confused. Is Oryx Snowman, or is that Jimmy? Sometimes it sounds like Jimmy is talking about Oryx, but then he'll be talking about himself. I don't know who's who!

message 52: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Snowman is Jimmy, Crake is the buddy and Oryx is the girl they both love.

message 53: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I just met Oryx in a most depressing way.

message 54: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Right now I'm listening to Voyager the third in the series. Davina Porter is narrating the story and when she starts speaking I get so pulled in I never want to leave.

Campbell Scott.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Yeah, I can never remember his name.

Is it the video? Jimmy always seemed to wonder if it was or if he always just thought it was her.

message 58: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Yes, that porn video with the children in it. Just awful.

Indeed it was. The book has a lot of surreal bits and thankfully there's less of that kind as it goes along.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I have a hankering to listen to Little Women. Haven't read the book since 9th grade but like most girls I fell in love with the story. I was about to give up on listening because the dialogue seems a little insipid to my grownup ears, but the story found its groove and I'm enjoying it. It's a little simple but so is A Christmas Carol, and I also love the message of that story.

message 61: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments Right now I'm listening to Hyperion by Dan Simmons and am loving it!

message 62: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Im listening to Live to Tell at home and Fearless Fourteen in my car. I love listening to Stephanie Plum on audiobook because she is hilarious.

message 63: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Little Women is chugging right along, but Marmie sometimes sounds like she's making speeches. I'm actually looking forward to it every time I hop in the old 4Runner. Very soothing after work on my ride home.

message 64: by Tracy (new)

Tracy That is how I got started on audiobooks Tressa. I worked across town and the traffic was horrible. It would take me over an hour to get to work and get home everyday. I would be so frustrated by the time I got out of my car. The tension was also very thick. I started listening to audiobooks and I was hardly tense or frustrated.

message 65: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments That's exactly how I feel. My commute is not too bad, just 30 mins. on the highway because of the traffic. But I don't mind it as much when I can just lean my head back and have a story read to me.

Dana * (queenofegypt) | 229 comments I am listening to The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson and enjoying it a lot. I am fascinated by the little things, like learning that the fair was where the Ferris Wheel was introduced, and AC lighting, and the Pledge of Allegiance.

There is a little TOO much detail about the fair sometimes, I am mostly interested in the serial killer story.

Its a great book and while the first part of the book does focus a bit more on the fair trust me it gets very focused on Holmes by the end.

glenda (ayngelwing) | 1051 comments haha no, not a Canadian flag! LOL, she is so funny tho! We just sit and laugh at the strangeness of it all... I believe you CAN hear her Tressa, hee hee.

message 75: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Still chugging through Little Women. Mr. March is back home and Meg has fond feelings for the tutor, Mr. Brooks.

message 76: by glenda (new)

glenda (ayngelwing) | 1051 comments Listening to Rachel Ray... and getting HUNGRY!

message 77: by Tracy (new)

She talks like she's on speed. She never stops to take a breath. Does she still have her show?

Yes, my boyfriend always has it on when I get home from work. I love to watch it, but so many of her recipes will just kill you!

message 81: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I am just flabbergasted about how she never shuts up. When does she come up for air? Her delivery is so unnatural. It's like she can't just talk in a a conversational tone; her voice keeps rising throughout the whole show.

message 82: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I'm watching a YT video of Ray. She's actually calm in this one. Maybe I caught her when she was drunk or something that other time. I like how she cooks simple food. Not everybody has the time it takes to make Barefoot Contessa's or Giada's dishes.

message 83: by glenda (new)

glenda (ayngelwing) | 1051 comments I hear you, she is definitely one of a kind. I do get a little tired watching her sometimes. I think she's damaged her voice from how much she talks and how hard she pushes it out. She's always raspy and hoarse. Maybe I'll call her when I'm finished school and offer her some tips, lol.

message 84: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Still plugging away at the many discs of Little Women. Why, Jo? Why can't you fall in love with Laurie? Now he'll have to settle for vacuous Amy. And I love how Mr. Beier is OLD at 40. I thought he was going to be in his sixties.

message 85: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I read Little Woman Years ago.

(view spoiler)

message 86: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Are you talking about Amy? Jo threw Laurie away, then Amy and Laurie sort of fell into it with each other.

Oh, you should close both spoiler tags <> and >!

message 87: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Started listening to Shadow of the Hegemon on the ride home yesterday. Love the lady reading Petra's part. Hearing an intro from Harlan Ellison was a bright spot in my day!

message 88: by Dana * (new)

Dana * (queenofegypt) | 229 comments Now listening to I Don't Want to Kill You (John Cleaver, #3) by Dan Wells , third in the Cleaver series.

message 89: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments Let me know what you think of that, Dana. It's the only one of the Cleaver series I haven't read yet.

message 90: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) Haha I still don't have the hang of that spoiler thing. But yes I am talking about Amy. She broke the sister rule. You don't take up with the man your sister has dated

message 91: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I'm listening to Them. The narrator's voice is wonderful; the book got mediocre ratings here on GR, but I'm enjoying the story about the gentrification of MLK's childhood neighborhood in Atlanta. Barlow is one of those annoying, angry, chip-on-his-shoulder characters, though. But I've chuckled at some of the things he's said and done.

message 92: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments I just finished listening to Needful Things by Stephen King, and narrated by Stephen King. Aside from a few annoying parts, I really enjoyed King's narration.

Michael (mikedecshop) | 1479 comments Jason wrote: "I just finished listening to Needful Things by Stephen King, and narrated by Stephen King. Aside from a few annoying parts, I really enjoyed King's narration."

I listened to one narrated by King and found he had a way of swallowing his "l"'s. That's the only way I can describe it. The longer it went on the more distracted it became.

message 94: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments LOL, Michael. Normally I like a professional to read the story, but Steve Martin did a wonderful job on Shop Girl, and Husseini did too with A Thousand Splendid Suns.

The worst audio I ever heard was Shadow of the Hegemon. The woman reader mispronounced Achille's name. It's pronounced "ahsheel" and not "akilleeze." Was so annoying! And every time the word hegemon was spoken by a kid, woman, old man, etc., a man's deep voice would come out of the blue and insert the word. It was such poor quality and I'm surprised since Card is such a big name.

message 95: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments What I hate is when the narrator speaks in a dead pan voice and doesn't bother to do character voices. That's like listening to my grade ten history teacher, who put me to sleep every day with his voice.

message 96: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Or those film strips in elementary school.

message 97: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments LOL Yeah, those were pretty bad, too. Talk about nappy time.

message 98: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I think those men went to Boring Voice school and studied their asses off to get it just right.

message 99: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments They must have, because being that boring can't be natural.

message 100: by Todd (last edited Jun 29, 2012 06:52AM) (new)

Todd Russell (toddrussell) | 118 comments Just started listening to Swan Song unabridged. I read the book when it came out in the eighties and will probably read it again someday, but wanted to hear somebody else read it.

Audible is running a deal where you can get two credits for taking a free trial of their service. In most cases one credit equals one book. I chose Swan Song as my first book.

Do people here prefer unabridged vs. abridged? I know I do, even though it makes the audio longer.
