Bryan Craig JANUARY

1. To End All Wars A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918 by Adam Hochschild Adam Hochschild Adam Hochschild
Finish Date: January 6 2012
Genre: British History
Rating: B+

Review: This is a great overview of the loyalty and dissenting voice in England over World War One. Many of the pages are devoted to the action on the front than the actual details of the protestors. This is why it did not give it an A. I think people who are familiar with the war will skim over this stuff and read the interesting tales of people who faithfully supported the war and those who did not. I still recommend it and the writing is first rate.

Bryan Craig 2. Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure The True Story of a Great American Road Trip by Matthew Algeo Matthew Algeo
Finish Date: January 12 2012
Genre: Presidential History
Rating: A

Review: What a great book. I can't imagine Harry and Bess driving their Chrysler to NYC without bodyguards for Secret Service, but it happened in 1953. Algeo weaves 1953 history with today as he re-traces their trip. Fun and interesting!

Those were different times; better days I am afraid were in the past in terms of safety.

Bryan Craig March

3. Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon Robert R. McCammon Robert R. McCammon
Finish Date: March 4 2012
Genre: Horror
Rating: A-

Review: This was good horror, post-Apocalypse kind of story. The evil villains were fun to read and the the book went along at a good pace.

message 5: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) I read that book Bryan.....and I don't usually read in the apocalyptic genre.......but I really, really liked it and it looks like you did too!!!

message 6: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig I did!

Bryan Craig 4. Elizabeth the Queen The Life of a Modern Monarch by Sally Bedell Smith Sally Bedell Smith Sally Bedell Smith
Finish Date: March 29 2012
Genre: British History
Rating: B+

Review: Anyone who wants to learn more about the Queen will need to read this book. It is well researched and she gained great access to materials and individuals. It reads like fast and you come away with a portrait of a monarch who is a person, not just a figure head.

Bryan Craig April

5. Byzantium The Surprising Life Of A Medieval Empire by Judith Herrin Judith Herrin Judith Herrin
Finish Date: April 8 2012
Genre: European History
Rating: B

Review: I liked this book. I'm used to more of a chronology, but it gave you a good overview of this important time period.

Wow, I did not know that you were reading that book. Glad you completed it.

message 10: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig I was and I commented in the discussions early on, but then once the other moderator stuff and Greta arrived, I lost touch. So sorry about that.

message 11: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
No problems...Greta takes center stage and you will find that you will be always in the wings from now on for her and your son.

message 12: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Nicely put, Bentley, thanks :-)

Bryan Craig 6. Your Three-Year-Old Friend or Enemy by Louise Bates Ames Louise Bates Ames
Finish Date: April 23 2012
Genre: Parenting
Rating: B

Review: I like this series and this installment helped in that I didn't feel alone as my son enters the crazy three-and-a-half stage. I understand why threes are worse than twos.

message 14: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
You are not alone and each age has it's own stage as you will undoubtedly find out (smile)

Bryan Craig May

7. John Quincy Adams A Public Life, a Private Life by Paul C. Nagel Paul C. Nagel
Finish Date: May 1 2012
Genre: Biography
Rating: B

Review: This is a good psycho-history and I learned a lot about JQA's life and personal struggles. I think it is a good compliment to a political history.

message 16: by Bryan (last edited May 23, 2012 06:31AM) (new)

Bryan Craig 8. Lone Star Rising Lyndon Johnson and His Times, 1908-1960 Volume 1 by Robert Dallek Robert Dallek
Finish Date: May 13 2012
Genre: Biography
Rating: A

Review: This is a well-balanced biography of LBJ, the first of two volumes. It is more digestible than Caro's and I highly recommend it.

Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

1. My Early Life 1874-1904 by Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill
Finish date: March 2008
Genre: (whatever genre the book happens to be)
Rating: A

Review: You can add text from a review you have written but no links to any review elsewhere even goodreads. And that is about it. Just make sure to number consecutively and just add the months.

Good to put in the Month Day and Year - if you do not know the exact day - then at least the Month and Year.

message 18: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Oops, got it; glad I didn't have 50 of these; it pays sometimes to read slow :-)

You are making me laugh Byran - I have no idea why I did not catch it before. (smile).

Bryan Craig 9. War and Decision Inside the Pentagon at the Dawn of the War on Terrorism by Douglas J. Feith Douglas J. Feith
Finish Date: May 2
Genre: American Politics/2003 Iraq War
Rating: A

Review: Because Feith was in the heart of it all, anyone interested in the Iraq war will need to read it. Also, his writing style is quite good.

Bryan Craig June

10. My Year in Iraq The Struggle to Build a Future of Hope by L. Paul Bremer L. Paul Bremer
Finish Date: June 8
Genre: American Politics
Rating: A

Review: This is also another important book to read to get Bremer's side of events. Very interesting.

Bryan Craig July

11. Battle Cry of Freedom The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson James M. McPherson James M. McPherson
Finish Date: July 16
Genre: American History
Rating: A

Review: This still holds well after 20 plus years. The writing is skillful and I recommend this as the first book to read to get a great overview.

message 24: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig 12. Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins Suzanne Collins Suzanne Collins
Finish Date: July 21
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Rating: A-

Review: This is a great story, the second in the series. I didn't like it as well as the first, because the whole concept was new. However, the second was great and the author steered the story in creative ways. I'm ready for the next one!

Bryan Craig August

13. One Minute to Midnight Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Castro on the Brink of Nuclear War by Michael Dobbs Michael Dobbs Michael Dobbs
Finish Date: August 5
Genre: American History
Rating: A

Review: This has become the standard book for the Cuban Missile Crisis for me. The author uses recently declassified material and shows not just the U.S. and Soviet side, but the Cuban side of things. You really understand how scary this time was.

message 26: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig 14. Known and Unknown A Memoir by Donald Rumsfeld Donald Rumsfeld Donald Rumsfeld
Finish Date: August 3
Genre: American History
Rating: A

Review: This is a great book to help us understand what was going inside the Bush White House/Pentagon.

message 27: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig 15. Enemies A History of the FBI by Tim Weiner Tim Weiner Tim Weiner
Finish Date: August 28
Genre: American History
Rating: A

Review: I figured I can add this now since we are done with the discussion. This is a great book, but I warn you, it doesn't cover the crime side of the FBI, but the intelligence part of it. Hoover casts a large shadow over the book and the FBI. Well written and shocking.

message 28: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig September

16. Catherine the Great Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie Robert K. Massie Robert K. Massie
Finish Date: September 15
Genre: Russian History
Rating: B+

This is a great introduction to Catherine the Great. It is well written and I think the strongest parts are her early life. It is quite a story.

disclosure: I received this book for free through the History Book Club on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ.

message 29: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Glad to have you along for the discussion on Catherine. I am back at Enemies and hope to finish that within the next few weeks. Two great books I think.

Finish Date: October 10
Genre: Horror
Rating: A

Review: Thanks to fellow moderator, Michael, for introducing me to this series. This is a lot of fun. It has interesting villains and great action with some good humor. It ended in a great fashion.

Bryan Craig December

18. Rule and Ruin The Downfall of Moderation and the Destruction of the Republican Party, from Eisenhower to the Tea Party by Geoffrey Kabaservice Geoffrey Kabaservice
Finish Date: December 8
Genre: Political history
Rating: A-

Review: This is a great history of the decline of moderates in the GOP. I am fascinated by this and I'm glad I read it. The fact the GOP are struggling with minorities makes sense now.
