Happy New Year! It's time for our nominations for January's group reads. If you haven't done this before, our rules can be found here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2.... If you have questions, please ask.

Our theme for January is Steampunk/Cyberpunk! You may nominate 2 Young Adult books, one that is themed, and one that is not. Please label your books as themed and non-themed. Nominations will run for about 1 week.

Don't forget to check the group's bookshelf for books we've already read.

Please include authors' names when nominating. Authors may not nominate their own books!

Thanks!

We've read Incarceron as a group already. Want to choose a different one?

We've read that one too. Do you want to nominate another book?

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Here's a link to our bookshelf to see which books have already been read. http://www.goodreads.com/group/booksh...

Or you can click the bookshelf link in the top right corner of the screen.

Cory Oakes (goodreadscomcory_oakes) | 6 comments Oops, sorry Angela! Let me think about it - Leviathan was recommended to me as a good "intro to Steam Punk". I'll see if I can find another one to nominate . . .

Cory Oakes (goodreadscomcory_oakes) | 6 comments Ok - for our themed book, I nominate Soulless

message 15: by Ann (new)

Ann | 88 comments I don't believe Soulless is a Young Adult book.

Agreed. It won the ALA Alex award for an adult book with wide YA appeal but it was not written for a YA audience.

Third times a charm, Cory?? :)

Cory, Your suggestion for Leviathan is excellent. Wonderful steampunkery within those pages and it is YA.

Cory Oakes (goodreadscomcory_oakes) | 6 comments Ah, man! Well, shows what I know about Steam Punk! I think, rather than blindly suggest another book, I will leave it up to those who know better :-) Looking forward to reading whatever gets picked!

You are on the right track, they're both steampunk!!

I'm telling you, I have the same problem! My knowledge is limited in that genre. I thought Leviathan first and Golden Compass second. We've read them both :-/ I finally just looked up "YA steampunk" on listopia for some help!!

Ann | 88 comments I plan to vote for Boneshaker, because I want to read it anyway, but I'll put in a nomination for Steampunk!: An Anthology of Fantastically Rich and Strange Stories in case some of the steampunk newbies are interested in seeing several different author's takes on the genre.

I don't know much in the steampunk genre myself, so I'll stick to non-themed.

Hate List by Jennifer Brown

Darn. And I usually check that too - sorry! Nope, no other noms, I will probably vote for The Iron Thorn anyway. Thanks!

PS - Does my other nomination still stand?

Between Shades of Gray is fine. I've wanted to read that one for a while!

I want to read that one! My 13 year old requested it for Xmas and I was going to steal it when she is done...Now that I am back to teaching middle school her books are recycled to my classroom library.

Tanya, I'm about halfway through and I'm completely sucked into this girl's life, her fear, her confusion, her guilt. It's very realistic- well written!

Steph | 4 comments As much as I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cassandra Clare, I am really crossing my fingers that another title gets the votes for the steampunk category. If anyone else reads some of the alternate titles too, let me know what you think, I dont have time to read them all, but am still searching for that perfect steampunk book to interest the teens in my YA book club; we've read the Leviathan series and that was a hit, but I think Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince will not hold the interest of some of the guys in the group!

Hate List has been on my own list since it came out in trade paperback, so I'm glad to finally have a reason to move it to the top of my pile if it makes it through the voting round!

I have read Mortal Engines. I liked it well enough, but probably wouldn't have bothered to read the sequels except that my generally non-reader husband picked up my library copy, devoured it, and then wouldn't stop talking about the rest of the series until I read them all. He liked Fever Crumb too, but the original series is the one that he still brings up years later. I mentioned this to a co-worker's husband and he, too, ended up falling in love with the series. I think it might be a guy thing, so if you're looking for books for male teens, you might at least think about that series. Of course, this is based purely on a sample size of 2, so it's not entirely reliable. :-}

Both are fabulous! I actually think I will re-read Clockwork Angel since it's been ages. I just finished
Clockwork Prince and it was phenomenal.

Me too, Meghanly. We've got polls up for the themes at the moment. I'll open a thread for nominations once the polls end this weekend!
